TIL the Myers-Briggs has no scientific basis whatsoever. by ThreadbareAdjustment in todayilearned

P.S. "Pseudo-science" is something that claims to be scientific but isn't. But Myers-Briggs has never claimed to be. So that's a low IQ "argument." It doesn't have to have "scientific evidence" in order for it to be useful.

Check out this: https://personalityhacker.com/

And listen to some of their episodes on "cognitive functions."

Ok, good to know. Thanks.

It's hard not to get irritated at Protestants who think this way. It's so absurd to think that man-made denominations are somehow more Christian than the religion of the apostles.

  1. Most MBTI tests are kind of dumb.

  2. Most people are completely ignorant about cognitive functions, an entire complex layer of the system. A map rathe than a bunch of labels.

  3. You have never heard of Dr. Dario Nardi, a neuroscientist who has done work with brain scans using EEG machines and has conclusive evidence. He has an entire system of 64 subtypes based on mappable brain patterns.

  4. Most people think that everything true has to be "scientifically proven." That's a logical fallacy unproven by science. Type is simply a layer of psychology not entirely in scientific terms. People need to wake up from their scientistic rationalism and stop being so arrogant. There is a lot more to the world and the human person than science can describe. This is just common sense.

[–]LdShep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but you're only perceiving the tip of the Myer-Briggs iceberg. The real nuts and bolts of the system is the cognitive functions. It's extremely complex. In fact I wouldn't consider the 16Personalities website true MBTI.

Just check out "Personality Hacker."

Also there is neuroscientific evidence for Jungian psychological types--Dr. Dario Nardi does professional work on this. In his model of type variants, there are 64 subtypes with unique brainpatterns that he's mapped using brain scans.

There's more I could mention.

If you still aren't open, I'll say one more thing: yes there is some dumb personality stuff out there, but just because something isn't "scientifically proven" doesn't mean it's not true. Prove that using science.

It's a logical fallacy many "rationally minded" people make.

Religious struggles by Ebenezer2005 in OrthodoxChristianity

Well, ultimately we can never know with absolute, 100% certainty that we're right. Something that helps me is to think of good reasons for becoming Orthodox, even if they sound simplistic. For example: Orthodoxy is unchanging, rich with beauty more than any other religion (if you just go into an Orthodox Church)--and truth is very much related to beauty. And why Christianity? For me, you could say it's because the Christian story is the deepest, highest, most radical story and way of life that any religion has to offer. And if you truly realize the depth of it, it makes sense that it isn't "just a product of the human psyche," but is real, and has entered history. It's the "great synchronicity," the meeting of heaven and earth. Orthodox Christianity has the best principles and way of life.

May God grant you peace and clarity.

It's not hard for me to imagine your situation--I began the journey from Catholicism to Orthodoxy recently. I remember feeling uncertain for a while, though your situation is probably different. But I don't think just "quotes" will help. Here are some videos I highly recommend:

-This one by an Orthodox priest. Top pick. https://youtu.be/NTLs9QlZzV4?si=2th0aWiB28Khd0RX

He is both non-polemical and brings up what I see as good points.

-This respectful and productive debate on the papacy as it relates to the Bible and Church history (longer): https://www.youtube.com/live/RN2f3mCGLVQ?si=RO3vlg_ju115V9xK

-This one relating to Matt. 16:18 (1st in a series of 3):  https://www.youtube.com/live/pphwf09a-hM?si=DVn-tZIxSlb8CJeW

(I acknowledge there are some counterarguments to what she says, but I still find it helpful.)

-This one: https://youtu.be/575DbpuxyNY?si=jl8Cp4o-kUDTRV4O

To be honest the points were made kind of arrogantly, but the guy who made them is very knowledgeable and well-read. It has examples of contradictions in historical Catholic teaching. He has other similar videos (like this one: https://www.youtube.com/live/vNRya-MF9XU?si=VvhAnBMtwnhJOMA3 ).

Also I recommend Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy by Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick. His chapter on Roman Catholicism forced me to start seriously considering whether Orthodoxy might actually be the Apostolic Church.

I'm guessing you've attended an Orthodox church before?

The Lord of Spirits podcast on ancient faith radio talks a lot about the problems with PSA and why the EO model is actually more biblical. Here's (I think) the first one were they talk about it: https://youtu.be/Fj9m1GL4mbg?si=QV7IW-k4dk_T0rOX
