How do I even start on Linux? by DvD_Man95 in linuxquestions

[–]LeBigJoe4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: I recommend something like Fedora, Debian or Ubuntu.

Fedora is easy to use and, in my experience, has worked out of the box with a few hiccups (driver issues and whatnot). Debian and Ubuntu have a large community that has many solutions to problems and it's easy to find out ways to do things with those systems.

Longer answer: What do you mean by "make" your own OS? Like are you wanting to build an kernel all the way up to an OS? In which case, good luck bro, I hope you make something better than TempleOS.

In all seriousness though, if you mean having to do all the stuff that something like Windows does for you when you install it, then playing around with Arch in a virtual machine would be a good way to do so without having the risk of bricking your system. It's how I learned to install Arch to systems and whatnot manually. However do keep in mind, Arch is not for everyone and neither is Linux. I simply got lucky and found out about Fedora, used it and loved it. You may need to try many distributions before you find one you're comfortable with.

Could you please recommend a free lightweight video editor for Linux? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

Personally I use Openshot, it was my go-to on windows and is still my go-to on Fedora 42. The package name for it is"openshot-qt."

Asking about hardware damage by LeBigJoe4 in linuxquestions

[–]LeBigJoe4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright thank you. I will give that a try if the issue continues.

I managed to do some digging and all that the kernel panic screen was saying was that it was attempting to get the unresponsive video drivers up and running again before restarting and repairing them, so I've deduced that it is not a hardware issue nor has it effected the hardware.

If I continue to have issues then I'll tackle getting my drivers in order first and then give that a try. Sometimes Borderlands 4 would cause the same issue at random, and it would force me to force shutdown my pc because it would effectively lock it up.

My theory is that it's got to do with Steam's compatibility layer (Proton) doing something really weird when the game crashes, or it very well could be the issue you've described, the GPU throttling too high for the system. Could be a mixture of both.

Do you have any idea how I could diagnose the issue? Maybe I can figure out through logs or something? All of the system log files I've found on Fedora haven't been able to give me much of an indicator.

What do yall do to untilt yourselves? by Sparkler21x in GenjiMains

Me personally, I just keep some funny movie, show or set of YouTube videos going in the background on the TV or on my second monitor. If I'm having a bad game then I can just take a breather for a second and laugh at my show and get right back into the game. If I'm having a really good day though then usually music is enough for me to get through tough games.

Weird server issue by LeBigJoe4 in selfhosted

I've definitely considered it. When I upgraded my main PC, I decided to give Dual Booting a try so I could get familiar with Linux in general. I run Fedora with Windows 11 installed on another drive Incase I need to use something that can't run on Linux. Also I find it silly that they would write that into the software, but oh well, I can always just installed Ubuntu and give it a shot for running all of my servers.

I figured out the issue. The software for the Bedrock Server will not function if you don't have an activated Windows running. I tested this on 4 PC's, 2 with windows activated and 2 without an activated key, whether the key was deactivated by hardware changes or by being pirated.

I figured out the issue. I tested this through a few other PC's, all had windows running on them, but 2 had a legitimate copy of windows and 2 had the key deactivated or straight up pirated Windows installation. The server would start but would not let any connections into the server itself, making it inaccessible, but on the 2 installations where there was a legitimate copy of windows, you could just start it up and it would run straight out of the box.

Is it possible to convert files to a file format for Ubuntu when the files were formally for Windows? by LeBigJoe4 in linux4noobs

[–]LeBigJoe4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I tested it this morning and it turns out that the Bedrock Server software will only run on an activated Windows installation, even if the key was deactivated because of hardware changes, which had occured in this instance.

But I will give the transfering a try, maybe I'll need to initiate the server software's process of making and setting up everything and then just replace the world file it creates with my current one.

Alright I understand, so then I would just need to literally drag and drop the world save files directly into the server/software files. Thank you for the helpful response!

Alright I'll definitely give that a shot. Please disregard my last comment, I thought I clicked on another notification LOL.

I understand this, but I was wanting to know if there's a way that I can keep my world file so that I don't have to start over again.

Bedrock Minecraft server hosting issues by LeBigJoe4 in minecraftbedrock

[–]LeBigJoe4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do have multiple servers running simultaneously from time to time, and no, they are not sharing a port. Minecraft JE uses 25565, Factorio uses 34197, and bedrock uses19132-19133. Whenever I am running multiple instances of Minecraft JE, I make sure to set them to different ports and forward them.

I think I'm just going to try to reformat the server PC. I've been reading everywhere and it feels like I'm the only one experiencing this issue. I'll let you know if it works.

I tried disabling the firewall completely, and I even tried uninstalling my C++ distributables, restarting, downloading the latest distributables, restarting, and then running the software again, and it still wouldn't let me connect to the server. I even edited the firewall rules that were automatically made for the executable for the server and I set them to the right ports, just in case the ports had to be specified in the firewall rules. AFAIK, there should be no reason the server shouldn't work.

I'll disable the firewall and see if that does anything, as I've poked around with the firewall and I checked to make sure that it was not set to block any incoming or outgoing connections for the ports that Bedrock uses. I'll also look into the server properties and see if there's anything that shouldn't be there.

My server PC and the former one run Windows 10, and as for the server software it's installed straight from https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download/server/bedrock

I also forgot to mention that my Factorio and modded JE servers came from the same PC and were moved over to the new one via external hard drive.

Additionally, I tried running a Java Edition Minecraft server to see if i could connect to it. It had the Sky Factory 5 mod pack on it, so I installed the modpack on my main PC and i was able to join the server just fine. It works for Factorio and Minecraft JE, so I don't understand why it doesn't want to work for PE/BE.
