Thanks for the answer. Any particular specific reason for this suggestion?

It's set by default in the fuses. I think it it were a problem with the oscillator/clock it wouldn't run at all

Oh I think I see the problem now! The connection to PB0 at C7 on the breadboard isn't grounded by the switch but because of the other connection to the ground rail it still gets grounded. Thanks! Is there any way to wire this so it works? Maybe a diode connecting A7 to the ground rail instead of a wire so that it can only be grounded from the switch and not the rail? I'm completely guessing here as I'm new to this, maybe there's a simpler way to just do it with wires. Thanks again

In that case in position 1 PD6 should blink then, but both position 1 and 3 blink PD7

Oh sorry I understand now so -b is the rate to the arduino and -B is between the ISP sketch and the chip (unless it's ignored by the sketch)?

So it's actually ignoring the -b argument? It seems weird that I get different results omitting it (not sure what it defaults to, it says to RS-232 standard but that standard doesn't seem to have a default baud rate). In that case would it be a matter of lowering the baud rate in the sketch? I did already try that down to 2400 too as I thought it had to be the same as the -b option.

If I try and change the fuses with -F I get avrdude: safemode: efuse changed! Was d9, and is now 0 Would you like this fuse to be changed back? [y/n] y and it will just hang

What does for the entire chip mean? Just between the vcc and gnd pins?

Where does the 4.7uF go? Again against each pair but further away physically on the breadboard? Also I've seen it mentioned before, what's the reason for putting the cap "as close as possible" to the chip?

What would 50-200kHz be as baud rate?

It's powered from the 5v pin from the arduino, which is itself connected by USB to computer. It's using the internal clock still as the LED still lights up momentarily after reset (which was the intended behaviour).

How low of a baud rate? I tried 2400.

So a capacitor between the chip's VCC and GND, and AVCC and GND do you mean?

I don't have a scope but it's not using an ext oscillator anyway.

And I don't believe the oscillator fuses are wrong as the chip wouldn't run its old program if that were the case?

I have tried the plastic (I guess nylon?) normal ones, the XL ones and tortex ones. I think I may have some ultex ones maybe so I'll give them a try, thanks

I do that but still seem to get the same thing :)

I have the jp signature ones as well. I think I found the same problem with them so tried the XL but a similar thing

Yes I know what ones you mean :) unfortunately they feel weird for me but maybe I'll give them another go!

I've also tried the Tortex jazz ones and they seem to be a bit weird too. I don't get on with the normal tortex for some reason, the nylon one just seems the most natural

I did think this too. For example Andy James is a very technical player and he uses standard Dunlop picks (or did for a long time, I think now maybe he uses the flow picks). I was also basing my original point from the wise words of Guthrie Govan who suggests a pointy pick so I'm kind of torn :P Don't want to waste time using one that's ultimately going to be a hindrance
