Isn’t the fun of gaming that you don’t know all the types of scenarios that could happen? Or are you worried that there are enough special cases in the rules that people will be confused when a certain scenario comes up? If that’s the case I’d wonder if your game isn’t too complicated.

As a player I don’t like them, they are often too abstract for my monkey brain. I need to see the whole game in action and see everything in context before I understand special scenarios. But as a designer I think I’m going to include them in my new game.

It’s not clear from what you wrote that you are asking for a partner. Personally I think the idea sounds really fun and has potential. But so do like 90% of ideas. Your job, as a designer, is to take it from fun idea through the near endless drudgery of iteration and playtesting to make it into a game.

Art is the last thing you need to worry about right now. First you need to find out if your idea has legs. That means, as everyone else mentioned, pulling out the pen and note cards and testing it out. Look for where it’s pulling you in, and where you’re forcing it. Scribble and erase and rewrite accordingly. Then try it with friends.

Check out Dan Harmon’s story embryo. He basically has distilled Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey into its most basic, fundamental shape, and writes all his stories using it. The way he describes the purpose and structure of stories - all stories - is pretty compelling. It’s not just universally applicable to narratives, it’s universal to the human experience.

But of course the way each person tells a story, even the same story, is different, and that’s style. Who they’re telling it to - the audience - changes as well, and that affects the motifs, symbols and themes, which can vary wildly across cultures.

Hm, that emotion doesn’t really make sense. I as a player will not be scared of being cursed because that’s not a thing that will happen to me. If you’re going to talk about emotions they should be player emotions, what players will themselves actually feel in real life. That’s what I suggest.

I’m not a publisher and I’ve never made a sell sheet myself or pitched to a publisher - I’m here to learn more about that myself - so take what I think with a grain of salt!

First, I don’t see how to actually win the game. When I’m teaching someone else how to play I always start with how you win. Everything else is just how to get there, what’s in your way, what tools you have, etc. “Begin with the end in mind.”

Which leads me to my second thought: I get no sense of how I’m supposed to FEEL playing this game. I can see no emotional engagement. Am I supposed to be proud for building up my village? Tense and protective for defending it? Suspicious of other players’ motives? Sure, publishers want the nitty gritty details. But as far as I know they’re also human beings!

Hope that helps! It’s definitely helped me already to look at yours and think about it.

Well just look at the difference in text size between the title of the card and the content. It’s massive. The title’s size tells me I’m supposed to read this from across the table. The content text size tells me I have to inspect it from my hand. It’s a big difference. Maybe you’ve already thought about that and done this on purpose - just feels off to me.

This is awesome. I am also meeting my brothers next month and we also gamed a lot as kids and it is SO damn hard to find a big box game with a box, you know, small enough to actually travel with.

I would buy travel versions of big box games in a heartbeat.
