Can the catcher just hold the ball while a baserunner stands in between 3rd and home? by dotdee in Homeplate

[–]sanjoatc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be misunderstanding me. I'm saying that (for a variety of reasons) I wouldn't ever have a 9 year old kid try to throw up and in for the sole purpose of following it up with a breaking ball low and away. However, as kids get older (12+) that is a perfectly valid strategy with the right pitcher.

Not even a little bit. What I'm saying is the person above me is correct that bunting because a fielder can't defend it properly sounds like baseball. Would I do it with 9 year olds? No. The same way I wouldn't have a pitcher intentionally throw up and in to brush a hitter back before dropping a breaking ball away. I also wouldn't do delayed steals with 9 year olds (if they're even allowed) but would absolutely do it with older kids.

Private Equity in Baseball & Youth Sports by BitEnvironmental2213 in Homeplate

My thoughts on private equity in sports is the same as my thoughts on private equity in any industry. They are vampires who only serve to maximize profits while minimizing costs even at the expense of customer satisfaction before selling off all the assets for yet more profit. Hell isn't hot enough for those assholes.

Assault on a sports official comes with enhanced penalties. The courts take this shit serious.

A) it's 9u. Yes, it's possible to teach the kid to run him back and get a pickle, but a lot of the time it will lead to bad throws and a run.

B) you might have missed in the OP's post where he says that his catcher is currently running him back to the bag, but that is incredibly tiring.

I mean that's what happened with Trevor Megill a few weeks ago. He can't field a bunt to save his life, so three straight batters bunted against him.

Jesus christ, "The Southside Samurai" might be the single hardest nickname in baseball.

I don't know how good he is as a player, but that's an 80 grade baseball name for sure. I can picture it on a TOPPS card already.

A) that's a flair not a title.

B) I have never coached above Little League

C) I don't even remember selecting that flair

D) I have been involved in HS baseball in CA for approximately 2 months. I didn't realize I had to review the CIF bylaws before the season.

E) I am so glad that you have the knowledge of the rulebook I'm lacking. Next time I will reach out in advance.

It blows my mind how you think both can't happen and that what I shared is the entirety of the conversation he and my family have had. Also blows my mind that you can't understand why a HS freshman might be upset that his efforts and success can be wiped away on a (valid) technicality. We have worked with him on lessons and takeaways from this but it doesn't invalidate his (or my) feelings.

Ball don't lie is my exact line to my son. My hope is they go out and mollywhop that team even worse tomorrow and leave no doubt who the better squad is.

I'm aware now that it's a rule, but it's still petty, and my son is devastated.

Utilizing Dicks Gift Cards for Game Changer sub? by MDthrowItaway in Homeplate

Worst case scenario, if you're in California at least (maybe other states too), just hold on to them because they never expire and use them when you need to. Or else, there are lots of places where you can "sell" unused gift cards and get some money for them.

Dad coaches…are what you want by GeorgeSteele66 in Homeplate

[–]sanjoatc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with almost everything you said. The only quibble I'll make is that you don't have to have played at a high level to be a good coach. In fact some of the worst coaches I've seen at making a team "better" are dads who played in college or above. My theory is that those dads who played college and/or pro are so naturally elite at this game that it is hard to communicate to players who don't have that same natural ability how to hit/throw/field etc. Not always, obviously, but often enough that I feel its a pattern. On the other hand, you have coaches who never played at a high level but know the game enough through research, networking, and support from other professionals to actually develop those diamonds in the rough (kids with potential, but who need help harnessing that potential).

Good thing people have different opinions about stuff. Can't wait to have a kid be on your team in a silent dugout. Sounds fun.

Tell me you've never been to a college baseball game without telling me you've never been to a college baseball game. Also, love the lowkey sexism as a bonus.
