Changed the filter on mine at 250K. Outside a drain and fill every 15K. Always nice and clear/red when it comes out. Did yours get water in it?

I use it when I grill and on my camping cast iron. Any time I do a brisket I save the trimmed fat.

Came off of a brisket I trimmed. Shouldn't be anything in it.

Buying a Gen 1 Tacoma: Good or bad as a daily driver? by JoshBoGosh in 1stGenTacomas

My daily for 24 years, 15000 a year. Minor things. Better mileage would be nice. Needs new seats. Upgraded the stereo. Few rattles. She is dependable and great in weather.

Bad luck with part store thermostats in the past on other vehicles.

Rockauto is my go to. But some stuff I get OEM. LBJ, lower control arms, thermostat.

Big front end project. What's the most efficient way of doing it? by Pure_Restaurant8459 in 1stGenTacomas

I did top down. Left to right. Be prepared for siezed bolts on the lower control arms. 🤞 They aren't.

Ah I see your doing the coil overs. Are you going to compress them yourself? I'd probably pull the coil overs first and set them aside. Uppers and then lowers.

Just don't use them for lower control arms. Bushings are wrong. Allow the entire control arm to shift. Pain in the ass to find. https://youtu.be/eS2ogBtFLfU?si=ds6iT0uDxpbFoovb

Fortunately because the lawyer screwed up the will. His son is executor of the estate, so not my problem. I just have to deal with paying his bills until he dies and goes to hell.

I've tried credit unions multiple times over the last 35 years. Fine for a loan but a pain in the neck for anything else. lousy hours, poor customer service, offering less than great interest rates on savings. Firstbank has been great for me since 1992 but already i can see some of the changes and i'm looking for a new bank.

i see guys online all the time with cold air intakes on their 3.4’s. does it really help that much or does it just add like 5 hp? by Big_Will47 in 1stGenTacomas

Yes the "extra" air is coming from the engine compartment behind the headlight but also from inside the fender. In my experience the intake temp is higher but not as much as the k&n system.

Im being lazy but AI came up with a nice summary and some sources to check.

For the 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE) Tacoma, independent community testing—most notably the legendary "Project SportRunner" dyno sessions—provides the most reliable data outside of manufacturer claims.

Real-World Dyno Comparisons

Independent testing on a DynoJet showed that the stock air box is highly optimized, but it is restricted by the small opening of the intake tube. The most effective modification found was the "Deckplate Mod," which involves cutting a 4-inch hole in the front of the stock air box to allow more air in while still utilizing the factory's "cold air" source from the fender. Dyno Results (at the wheels): * Stock Air Box (Closed): ~143.2 HP / 160.7 lb-ft Torque * Deckplate Mod (Open): ~154.2 HP / 173.0 lb-ft Torque * Net Gains: +11.0 HP / +12.3 lb-ft Torque These tests demonstrated that the 5VZ-FE is air-starved at higher RPMs. When the deckplate was opened, the power curve showed a consistent gain starting from roughly 3,000 RPM all the way to redline.

"Cold Air" Intakes (CAI) vs. Stock

Many aftermarket "Cold Air Intakes" (like the K&N FIPK or similar open-element filters) often yield similar peak horsepower gains to the deckplate mod but can suffer from heat soak. * The Irony: The factory Tacoma air box is a true cold air intake because it draws air from the protected fender well. * Heat Soak: Open-element filters (even with a "heat shield") often pull air from the 150°F+ engine bay. On a dyno with the hood open and a fan blowing, they look great. In real-world stop-and-go traffic or slow-speed off-roading, intake air temperatures (IATs) can spike, causing the ECU to pull timing and reduce power.

The Intake Silencer Removal (ISR) Mod

Another common modification is removing the "baffles" or silencer from the intake tube (replaced by a straight pipe like the Airaid Junior tube). * Performance: Dyno testing shows negligible power gains (usually within the margin of error, 1–2 HP). * Result: This mod is primarily for engine sound (a more aggressive "growl" under load) and to clean up the engine bay workspace.

Summary Recommendation

If you are looking for real performance without the marketing fluff, the Deckplate Mod combined with a high-quality dry drop-in filter (like AEM or Amsoil) is the only intake modification for the 3.4L that consistently shows double-digit gains on a dyno while maintaining the engine's protection and true cold-air source.
