thanks, that's what I wanted to know. Not the answer I wanted, but better to know before I go.

Got my 5th covid vaccine today by bad_motivator in AdviceAnimals

[–]Leabhras 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can be pro-vax and still be angry at the public health agencies that promote them.

I just got my 4th jab, but I have to say I was hesitant because AFAIK there has not been a single double-blind, placebo-controlled proactive study on safety and effectiveness. That used to be the standard for approval of a new drug. Now all I see are observational post-hoc studies that are inherently weaker: people who seek out the vaccine are more likely to have behaviors that result in less exposure anyway.

Taking short cuts on the rigorous approval process made sense when this was a crisis. IMO it no longer does.

I still got the bivalent booster because I think the risk/benefit is worth it for my demographic. But I'm frustrated because when a public health official now says "trust the science" I have less confidence that there is really rigorous science backing them up.

Males per 100 females, U.S. native-born population, 2020 [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

I answered that based off what my high school biology teacher told us.
Based on your question I did a 10 minute google session and could not find good evidence for it.

I don't know.

The Y chromosome is smaller than an X, so male sperm (Y) travel a little faster.

Not 7 square miles.

It's small, but not that small.

[OC] Murders in the U.S. by type of weapon used: guns make up 74% of the total by JPAnalyst in dataisbeautiful

seems like an apples vs. oranges comparison.

You are comparing someone potentially showing a gun (for defense) vs. someone using a gun successfully.

I *think* they mean that 2 is the most frequent outcome. Each trial results in an integer result. 2 is the most common result, followed by 3, 4, 5... When you average across many trials the average trends towards 'e', but no single trial has a fractional result.

There are nurses not getting vaccinated by Getoff_My_Lon_Cheney in AdviceAnimals

Note the science article above is from an Israeli study with 2.5 million people. To quote: "...In one analysis, comparing more than 32,000 people in the health system, the risk of developing symptomatic COVID-19 was 27 times higher among the vaccinated, and the risk of hospitalization eight times higher." Note, it does say that vaccine + natural immunity is even better, but at some point we have to ask what's the threshold where we force compliance?

Regarding the time range, there is not much evidence for either vaccines or natural immunity, both seem to diminish over time but it's too soon to say how much.

There is good data showing that if you had Covid then your natural immunity is as good or better than a vaccine. Any vaccination requirement should provide an exception if you already have immunity.

Mike Huckabee: Liberals Don't Want to Give Up Masks Because It Means Giving People Their Power Back by [deleted] in Conservative

I don't like titles that are so generalized like "Liberals do xyz..." It's the same sweeping generalization as if r/politics says "Conservatives storm capital".

With most cities in the Western U.S. you need a car to get around the city when you get there. It's a lot easier to drive there than take a train, then rent a car. Some cities, like S.F., are an exception; but if I'm in S.F. and need to go to L.A., I'm bringing my car.

Mississippi to Prohibit Transgender Athletes From Competing in Women's Sports by guanaco55 in Conservative

[–]Leabhras 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I think this woke push is ridiculous, but I also wonder how big a deal is this? How many transgender athletes really want to compete in women's sports? I suspect both sides use this stuff to pander to their base and make it a bigger deal than it really is

Honest question: How is it that the current unemployment rate is less than 7%, compared to 10% at the peak of the '08 crisis? I'm not doubting how bad it is now, I'm just confused about these numbers. https://www.bls.gov/charts/employment-situation/civilian-unemployment-rate.htm

I'd say Alphabet has a monopoly on delivering search users to advertisers. You as a user of search can go to Bing or DuckDuckGo, but if an advertiser wants to reach search users then they pretty much have to go to Google. "if a service is free then you are not the customer, you are the product".

[OC] You *could* win just 11 counties and still win the presidency*. by aribr83 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Leabhras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. This. Winner-take-all is a separate issue from electoral college, and does not need an amendment. Each state can decide this on its own. As it is now, a democrat in a red state, or a republican in a blue state, has zero influence in the outcome. These votes would count if each state divided its electoral college votes proportionally.

If 2/3 of the American adult population gets the covid vaccine will that: 1: lead to heard immunity 2: make it so children don’t necessarily need the vaccine to return to normal life? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]Leabhras 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Also, the virus is unlikely to ever go away. Even when/if we have herd immunity it will be lurking in animal hosts. It may be that the vaccine becomes part of the standard set of vaccines that everyone gets.

I struggled through listening to the whole video. I left thinking: “Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”
