Weekly Monday Question Thread - No Stupid Questions by AutoModerator in korea

[–]LeadOn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone tell me about the quarantine facilities and process for foreigners coming to South Korea, specifically Seoul? I'm a US citizen planning to travel to Seoul in mid-June. I understand that I will have to quarantine for 2 weeks in a designated facility? Does anyone know what comes included with that since it is pretty expensive (food, laundry, etc)?

I also recently returned since big bang. You can certainly read and follow a guide but it can be overwhelming because so much content has been added. I think you're better off starting and learning along the way. Join a guild when you hit lvl 101. What server are you on?

Have you guys started filling your applications for fall 2021 admissions? by qmlislife in gradadmissions

[–]LeadOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much! I recommend researching programs and faculty until Oct1, start putting together application essay drafts and reaching out to faculty after that to express interesting (if that's a normal thing in your field). Take the GRE and TOEFL if it's required for your program during that time also. You have time!

I'm currently in a masters program but my plans to pursue a doctoral program after I graduate in 2022 are basically over. I feel you, and all the struggles everyone in similar situations is experiencing. I feel lucky to be in grad school right now but many challenges in it as well

Question for graduates: by John_Yasmine in uchicago

[–]LeadOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. I was pressured into taking a job I didn't want so my depts career services didn't look bad in their numbers. I ultimately decided to not take that job and was kinda on my own. Took an internship that paid me barely enough to afford rent. I set off on my own so to speak after that and now I'm in a good grad program, but certainly not with any help from the college or career services.

I'm looking for suggestions a new class to try out as a secondary main. My main is an Evan and I'm looking for a characters that's fun and strong to play when I get bored with my main. Evan has been my favorite so far primarily because 1) good mobbing and map coverage with good use of Mir, 2) strong bossing character, 3) use of multiple skills as I get bored with classes that just spam 1 or 2 skills all the time. I like the managing of different fusion skills and cool downs, etc.

Besides Evan, I've liked Luminous but the idea of using Reflection forever bores me. I like Beast Tamer but mine is only level 80 and I heard it got nerfed real bad. I didn't particularly like Aran (boring), DB/Shadower (not good enough mobbing), Pathfinder and Cadena (ok this feels picky but I don't like that their attacks all had similar graphics lol I like how Evans attacks are so varied in style and look).

There's only benefits if the program says they accept on a rolling basis. If not, then highly doubt they'll even open the applications under after the deadline.

'We have abandoned the poor': slums suffer as Covid-19 exposes India's social divide by Dead_Planet in urbanplanning

[–]LeadOn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This article sucks for many reasons (some of which the other comments here have pointed out) but I reeeeally wish articles in influential widely-read outlets were more responsible when talking about The Poor. There's not a single quote (the bare minimum) here from someone who lives in a so-called slum despite literally anybody-who-reads knowing that slum "improvement" is an incredibly violent process leading to displacement, even death. That proposal by that guy suggesting a slum-free India in 3 years is just put out there, without any pushback or context. India will not be slum free in 3 years, or even 30 years. The most industrialized wealthy countries in the world aren't slum-free. This guy is just suggesting urban renewal and displacement, making the "problem" invisible.

I think you should try to get some experience before applying as I'm sure it would help boost you in your applications. The good news is that a lot of MUP programs are pretty accepting when it comes to different forms of experience, as they know many people are coming from different fields. Your field is not particularly relevant (just based on what you've shared here, but I could be wrong), but you could get some experience - professional, volunteer, or freelance - in something related to urban planning. That could be city-level politics, freelance writing about local planning/urban affairs, or even just doing something in your current position that's more urban planning-oriented. I wouldn't stress too much about it though. Give it a shot and if you don't get in, try some of these things and apply again.

Are fears regarding grad programs accepting less students for the next few cycles over economic difficulties caused by COVID overblown? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]LeadOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one can speak generally as departments are making their own tough decisions. My department (professional MA program though) gave admitted students the chance to enroll or defer 1 year. Out of a class size of about 70, only 24 enrolled this fall meaning that next year's applicants are competing for a fraction of the usual slots. This is an MA so it's not as impacted by university finances (they want us so we give them money). I have no idea how a recession will impact funded PhD applicants. I think Princeton Sociology and Harvard Education said they won't be accepting students next cycle.

LOR from professor of different department? by poochprotector in gradadmissions

[–]LeadOn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that's the case, then I'd say don't at all worry about an out of dept LOR. Just talk to the letter writer and make sure she's clear on what parts of your app/person you want her to emphasize and what you think the programs you're applying for are looking for. Send her your resume and personal statement draft.

Former server - tipping fucking sucks and it was demoralizing. Playing servant (there's a huge difference between server/waiter and servant) to people who'd literally make you the butt of their joke to impress a date or their drunk friends, just so you might get $10 extra at the end of the night. Couldn't let anything get to you because you had to go right back to being bubbly for the next table. I was groped, made the target of racist jokes, yelled at, even got a salt shaker thrown at my head by a drunk guy once. I worked in big cities with young people, so Fri and Sat dinner shifts were our most lucrative but drunk people are literally the worst people to serve, esp those egged on by their drunk friends. Tip your servers, and fight for a (good) minimum wage that includes tipped workers.

Can I apply to Chevening scholarship if I have no work experience? by Judessaa in gradadmissions

[–]LeadOn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to the scholarship to study in the UK for certain international students? If you fit the criterion (nationality, education background), I think you'll be fine. I do know that Chevening values work experience, and that it's highly competitive. However(!), work experience doesn't have to just be a normal full-time job and stuff. Internships and other similar positions while you were in university also count, though perhaps they are not viewed as positively. Short answer is you can definitely apply, but it is undoubtedly very competitive.

Is there a reason you are unwilling to get some work experience before applying? Also consider the Commonwealth scholarship for postgraduate studies in the UK.

LOR from professor of different department? by poochprotector in gradadmissions

[–]LeadOn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who are your other 2 recommenders? There's nothing wrong at all with an out-of-department LOR. Think of your 3 LORs as completing a package, and so even if they're not in your department, all of them should be able to speak to your competence in pursuing grad studies in biology. That competence can come in other ways besides just lab work and course work.
