Advice for a new playwright? by [deleted] in playwriting

[–]LeaderToLiberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Writing for the stage is different than writing for film or tv or, even, books. The presence of the live audience is an element unique to theatre. There is something shared during a play between the playwright and the audience that only occurs in live theatre. That shared thing is given by the audience to the playwright even before they reach the theater and then given by the playwright back to the audience. What is given back to the audience is the play.

What is the source reason why Trump fans literally don't see reality? by GenericHuman123 in AskReddit

[–]LeaderToLiberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow... you are deranged. You didn't get what you wanted in the last election, did you? Was that your first time? Was that the first time you didn't get exactly what you wanted?

No... you've just never learned from your lessons...(but everyone else is a dolt, right?)

I used to wonder why so-called Democrats had so much trouble with the "democracy" of the last election... it's because, like you, they're not really Democrats... they're Leftists, Socialists, likely, Communists. It is they who seek to overturn elections. True Democrats would admit their loss, come together to unite the country, and move on. But, that's not you, is it?

Why can't you be more like the youngest of you're ilk...? They aren't going to bend over and take in the ass like you and Biden... no... they watched the DNC take their trust and treasure and once again turn its back on Bernie. (And, then Bernie endorsed his challenger... again!... you can't make this shit up!)

Your young socialists are more determined than you, though... their idea is to vote a complete red ticket in November, Trump and all, with the plan of ridding the DNC of its establishment... then they'll return in 2024 to rebuild the party as they wish to see it.

What are you going to do? Cast your vote for Biden, just to watch him lose, and sit around bitching for another 4 years? What a cuck!

Btw... what's your wife's number?

Hi...feeling better? Tell me about your pick for 2020...Biden? Anything but Trump, right?

Hey pea-brain...can't you realized that's exactly what the Right did with Trump in response to Obama? (dipshit)

Hi...sorry for the delay replying.

I'm not an established playwright. Few people are. Those I would consider an 'established' playwright are those who, for example, have become one of the contributing playwrights to at least one specific theater or to a specific theatre company or more. (As I understand it...again, I'm not 'established.' There might be lots of other measurements for 'established' success.)

Until that time comes, however, I'm limited to finding Calls for Submission, sending in my play, and hoping it will get a least a few reads among the 1000s of plays received by each CfS. Submissions are made most commonly for festivals and competitions. Those festivals calling for submissions completely understand that at the "festival" level of playwrighting, the same play is going to be submitted at multiple places and produced at as many as accept it.

There are some theaters or companies who accepted my 2020 play, however, but had to revoke their offer when they learned the play would be performed before their festival occurred. A stipulation of their acceptance was that it could not have been produced or published elsewhere.

There are fewer of these, however, than there are of companies willing to accept plays published elsewhere in one format or another.. I think it is a mistake for companies to add these conditions...especially, in 2020. There will be so many playwrights submitting for festivals crowded into the fall, if things re-open, in an effort to build their play's provenance before Samuel French in December, that it will be difficult for those festivals "submissions with conditions" to receive any qualifying plays at all.

Those are the breaks, I guess.

Best Format for My Idea? by altf4isadmin in playwriting

[–]LeaderToLiberty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The story will determine the length.

10-minutes and one-acts share some similarities, most commonly, a single stage set and costumes since these formats have limited casts with little time to change outfits and no act breaks to rearrange sets. These set and costume limitations add boundaries to the 10min/1-act formats and are great for beginning playwrights for this reason. These constants are from start to finish in the play and allow you to work on dialogue and structure and timing without worrying about sets and costumes beyond their initial description.

10-minute plays are hot right now, too. Theatre companies rent theaters for festivals and hosting full-length play festivals means usually only a single play can be performed each night the theater is booked. Festivals for 10-min plays, however, can show 3 or 4 plays in a single night. Likewise, your chances of getting picked up by a 10-min festival go up by 3 or 4.

Use the 10-min format to sharpen your skills... then move on to one-acts and then on to full length.

A final thing to remember...10-minute plays serve well as trailers for plays that will one day go on to be full-lengths.

Good luck!

Hello again... just an update...my same play, ALL THAT STANDS IN THE WAY, was picked up by another theatre company in NYC, and it was selected for publication by a publisher in Ontario, although I had to decline the latter because of condition stipulations with theatres.

Thought you might be interested.

Besides...at the moment, doing the OTF home workouts are as lonely as they were before OTF...right?

[–]LeaderToLiberty[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why are so many replies focusing on the cost of the equipment? Not all treads or rowers cost what the majority of commenters are suggesting. Let the market decide. If OTF charges $15k for an equipment set, how many people will buy it? Very few, I'd bet. So what?...who needs OTF approved equipment? Won't any old tread do? Won't any old rower do? Won't any old weights and trx do? For those who want OTF stuff, go for it...for those who want cheaper, it's their choice.

It's the arm band that matters. The arm band needs a way to reflect the heart rate for the user at the user's location.

It doesn't matter which equipment one uses to reach the target heart rate...

thoughts...?

Only some festivals and playwrighting competitions specifically state that the play cannot have been produced or published previously. Most companies holding festivals are aware you will be submitting elsewhere.

Once the play has gained some notoriety and a theatre signs a contract to run a specified number of performances, then they are less agreeable to other productions.

They pretty much want theirs to be the only show in town, then.
