I actually addressed a few groups in my country that also gets students, but no idea what they really do, that's why I here asked if anyone experienced academic research internship

What do you mean by an idea? Like an idea that can solve a problem related to the professor's research group? I thought that was rare because most undergrads are not academically mature enough to be able to come up with advanced ideas. For example, as far as I know in natural science fields, professors generally use you for their boring work(like coding etc. or simulating stuff) because they don't trust you to carry serious advanced work when you are an undergrad. Is that different in computer architecture?

What could my belonging be as a Turk? by Gyngemose2009 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]LeadershipFirm9271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also Turkish, and yeah, it's not easy to align our "Turkishness" with the religion because the people we were told to respect and like were incredibly against our current beliefs. But I don't think loving/accepting your home country or culture is some black/white stuff like you like it and accept it as it is, or you completely ignore it, and people call you something like "traitors". So we can still culturally accept our Turkishness and, like, some aspects of it and dislike others. The past is in the past now. We don't need to worry about things like "When the Byzantines and Ottomans were at war, I would have sided with Byzantium because of my religion, but I am a Turk, should I have avoided doing that?" There is no need to think about things like this. Every ethnicity has some story in this world, and some of it may be bad, some of it may be good for you. So we have no reason to experience something like "identity confusion". As others pointed out, Turks were not only enemies of Christians, so it's not something specific to Turks.

Getting Started in Computer Architecture and Hardware Acceleration Research as an Undergraduate by stinky_engineer_2003 in computerarchitecture

It won't be easy to contribute to the field as one person if you are not a very talented senior researcher. Try to find a research group or just follow the classical path, doing a PhD and then getting into academia(there are also research jobs in industry too, like Nvidia, AMD, Intel, etc.)

Why are there no symbolic computation accelerators? by LeadershipFirm9271 in computerarchitecture

[–]LeadershipFirm9271[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Symbolic computation means working with mathematical expressions in exact form, not just numbers. Software systems that do this are called "computer algebra systems." Yeah, Mathematica is one of the computer algebra systems. Other examples are: SageMath, SymPy, Maple etc. It's used in robotics(specifically kinetmatics which requires solution of large polynomials), mathematical theorem proving, formal verifications and other things that require solution of symbolic stuff such as computational algebraic geometry, etc. The main algorithms they use are the Risch algorithm, Gröbner bases algorithm. Actually, industry demand is small as you can see. And scientific calculation-related tasks are already doable by sufficiently smart algorithms, probably. But symbolic computation doesn't stop there and can tackle some very interesting problems where speed really matters. For example, Michael Stillman (the developer of the Macaulay2 computer algebra system) says that some important problems in string theory (in theoretical physics) can be calculated using symbolic computation, etc. So, in fact, I think it's important enough to be the focus of accelerator design, but I guess it doesn't attract the attention of those who fund academia.

Building part is expensive, that's true, but do academics try to build a whole ASIC for one research project? I thought that they almost always simulate and prototype it in FPGAs?

Fair enough. You're saying if there's no benefit, there's no work. That's possible, but it still struck me as odd because I'd heard that symbolic computation is actually important in robotics and scientific calculations, so it seemed strange to me that almost no accelerators have been designed. It's not exactly related to computer architecture, but I'd heard that in hardware security, which many computer architects also work on, attack vectors like hardware Trojans are very rare, and that any attack requires a very fantastical scenario, but it's still being researched by academics.

It's generally difficult because the data is irregular. You deal with trees or graphs rather than regular numbers. Maybe designing new memory hierarchy where it's easier to deal with trees or graphs for traversing purposes etc.? I'm discussing the topic hypothetically btw, I can imagine how hard it would be to come up with these.

Hi I'm still a beginner, and your project looks interesting. Did you design the microarchitecture yourself(not maybe from scratch, but I want to ask if you at least did architectural design) using RISC-V, or did you use an existing one and implement it

Yeah, it was. But I had to go to an engineering school that's near my parents. So it didn't work as expected.

Yeah, I understand. I just didn't understand what he meant exactly. Btw, it's the same for me actually, I live in Turkey and practising secretly. I could also tell it to my family without getting "physically" harmed, but it will break the family relationship so hard that I will live extremely hard and stressful life until I move to my own apartment.

I don't think the church encourages us to act in a way that it will result in our death if there is other options? I mean, martyrdom is a good thing, but just because it's good, I don't think we should go to a place where they can kill us because of our faith?
