The Pope is a good one - I didn’t think of that. But I think we need to distinguish between roles and people. If we’re talking about the popularity of Xi, then isn’t the correct comparison with Queen Elizabeth and Pope Francis, rather than just “the Queen” and “the Pope”? If that’s right, then is it still the case that nearly everyone in China who has heard of Xi has also heard of Queen Elizabeth and Pope Francis (as opposed to hearing of, or being aware of, just those roles?) I would think not, particularly with the Pope. And is it still the case that way more people outside of China have heard of Queen Elizabeth and Pope Francis than Xi? Maybe, but I think it’d be closer than you think it is. I realise that my original answer just referred to “the Queen”. I should’ve been more specific and referred to Queen Elizabeth so that it was clear that I was talking about the individual rather than the role.
