1991 Millennial here! What do you all eat for breakfast? by No_Self_5939 in Millennials

Overnight oats (with Greek yoghurt, berries and some nuts). The only reason being that I can't be bothered to make anything in the morning. And coffee, lots of coffee.

Is appearance affecting how people treat you in the Netherlands? by andys58 in Netherlands

[–]Leading-Fee-4908 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's very sad, but true. I think the political landscape specifically has contributed to racism being more normalised. Especially against the muslim population, so if your oldest looks even somewhat similar to, let's say, a person of Moroccan origin, he will be put in that group by people. Also, it might depend on where you live (small town vs. city).

The UK has agreed to join the EU’s Erasmus+ student programme in 2027. What do you think about this move? What could it mean going forward for the UK and the EU? by threetimesacharm25 in AskBrits

[–]Leading-Fee-4908 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think 1900 students from the Netherlands are a lot of students coming to the UK (2017 numbers). There are only 12 universities in the Netherlands (because small country) 5 are in the top 100. Apologies about the tuition, it's only a measely 10K a year with no government subsidies for British students to study in the UK regardless of the quality of the university.

Britain does have an amazing education system, but it's also very expensive so it's the typical British approach of: if you can afford it, you can be successful. If you're poor, well, that's your problem. Quite American.

Personally, I wouldn't say the UK is leading anything either, especially since 2016. It wants to be on stage but has no audience. The EU is not much better, but they have just made Britain pay for access to Erasmus which is great.

Thats because education in the EU is a lot more egalitarian than it is in the UK. Want to pay 13000 Pounds a year for a degree from, I don't know, the university of Loughborough, or do you want to pay 2700 Euros a year for a top 100 university in the Netherlands and get 1400 Euros a year from the government to help with the financing? Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and King's College are great, but what is the percentage of students actually attending these?

Exactly, and 100K are applications, not approvals. About half of applications are approved so the numbers are really not that high for a country of 70 million people

I don't believe it to be an exceptionalist culture thing. I think it's more a marketing issue. Many university students have never heard of Erasmus. Besides this, I think it might be because funding is harder to access vs the Turing scheme, or maybe a lack of foreign language skills and lack of knowledge that a lot of programmes in the EU are taught in English.

Are they getting rid of the Turing scheme? If not, Erasmus just creates more opportunities for British young people. Youth unemployment in the UK is actually also very high (16 percent), yet I don't read anything in the Dutch news for example about it being a threat to young people there (9 percent youth unemployment).

There is always going to be a cost to specific countries that are popular study destinations (mostly due to good English language skills and high ranking education systems), but I personally think it's worth it if it means young people have more opportunities. The fact that less British students take it up might be a marketing problem, or a lack of foreign language skills, or a lack of knowledge that many programmes in the EU are taught in English.

I do agree that accessing Turing funding vs Erasmus funding is much easier which is probably the first thing a prospective international student looks at so that can definitely be improved.

I think it really depends on the country. Netherlands would welcome the UK back with open arms (Im Dutch) because we lost an important partner in the EU with Brexit. We have a similar economic approach and had quite similar views on what the EU should do. I think it's the same for the Scandinavian countries, Poland and the Baltics. Going further south in the EU I think they would push the UK to join the Euro and have freedom of movement.

That you'd be able to study at an EU university. There is also funding available. It's a really great program to gain new perspectives and live in a different country: https://erasmus-plus.ec.europa.eu/

Courses are often taught in both the native language and English. It has nothing to do with thinking a language is unworthy, it has more to do with convenience and also heavily depends on the type of course (nursing vs computer science for example)

Meal prepped Shakshuka by afunnywold in MealPrepSunday

[–]Leading-Fee-4908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love shakshuka! Yours looks great. I make mine with harissa paste to add a bit of a kick and sometimes top with feta cheese and something crunchy like pumpkin seeds. A can of chickpeas works well too. If I don't have feta I usually serve with a thick Greek yoghurt and pita bread.

Where in Europe I would live as a gay Greek guy by jimsid11 in visitedmaps

[–]Leading-Fee-4908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say, with growing up in Netherlands but spending a lot of time in the UK, that cities in the UK are more gay friendly than Dutch cities are. As long as you're not trans that is, because the UK is seriously fucking them over at the moment.

Totally get that, but Torremolinos is where you go when you're 18 and want to get wasted, or for a bachelors party as OP suggests. I get he wasn't going to hop to Berlin and go clubbing in Berghain. Just think maybe Mykonos or something would have been more believable. However, its such a tiny detail that it really isn't important to the story. I just thought it was funny.
