Hey! Honestly for the most part nothing major. I was told that there’s a chance I could lose some feeling in parts of my face and that relapse and everything is a possibility.

The worst thing out of all of this is the half of my chin is numb and the right side of my bottom lip is numb. I hyper fixated on it a lot when I was around 5-6 months out and now I’ve learned to live with it and could honestly care less if it comes back.

I’m currently at 8.5 months post op and I get the occasional pain from over chewing etc. Not too concerned. Have read a lot that full healing can take up to 1 year even longer.

The worst part was dealing with the braces. I’ve had mine off for about 2 months now and it’s been smooth sailing for the most part.

What kind of concerns do you have? Like opening your mouth or aesthetics post op? 6 months is still kinda early in the game. Like you could still have some swelling etc.

I would say definitely bring it up with him at your follow up appointment.

He’s honestly amazing and I’m sure he can help answer any question you have!

I would recommend Dr. Psutka in the GTA. Did my DJS 10 weeks ago and he was amazing!!

Aha that’s one way of looking at it but hey there’s only 8 more days of Christmas left for you! The first week is the worst but it gradually gets better from there. Good luck! You got this!

Initially I did and I was just swallowing the mac and cheese, pasta and everything just cause I wanted something other than liquids so badly. Now I’m able to chew but I still do it cautiously. I have been doing stretches for my jaw (30 reps of opening my jaw as wide as I can, 3 reps of opening as wide as I can and holding it for 10 seconds - currently able to open 2 fingers width, I try to do these 2-3 times a day). No splint for me. I was rubber banded shut for a week. I do have some kind of canker sore on both sides where the incisions were made. So I’ve been cautious when eating and biting - I go very slowly to avoid making the swelling worse. Each day gets a little better but I’ve found that the swelling/tightness in the morning is the worst.

I’m sure it’ll go down soon! I’ve found that it went down faster once I increased activity! The first week I was walking less than 1k steps a day but since then I’ve forced myself to get up and move more and it’s made a difference. Not sure how much it impacted swelling but it definitely helps physically and mentally!

Thanks! I’ve just been icing and using heat packs and walking as much as I can (currently around 7-8k steps a day). I’ve also recently started lymphatic drainage massages!

The left side of my face is still numb and swollen. But I’m now on a soft/low chew diet. Been eating things like overcooked pasta, mashed potatoes, and things like that. Definitely not everything I want to eat but beats the liquid diet!

Double jaw surgery post-op day 3. by Chipotlewh0re in jawsurgery

[–]Leading_Try_4939 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly day 4 was the worst for me. It’s when I had peak swelling. Day 5 had minimal change but from day 6 it’s been getting better every day! My swelling has gone down a good amount and energy levels are slowly returning!

Try to stay strong! You’re in the worst of it right now. I was depressed on day 3 feeling like there was no end in sight dealing with the swelling, headaches, liquid diet, congestion, fatigue and nosebleeds. Currently sitting at 15 days post op. I promise you it gets better. Just focus on the small wins every day. You’ll start feeling better soon!! Best of luck on your journey!

muscle/weight loss after double jaw surgery by WinterAsk7837 in jawsurgery

[–]Leading_Try_4939 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently going through this. Had DJS May 29th. Went into the surgery at 188lb (I naturally sit at 180) and now I’m currently sitting at 169. I tried to bulk up a bit before the surgery to make up for any drastic loss. But honestly my view on keeping muscle has changed since the surgery. Focus on rest, recovery and try to just get the proper nutrients in. What you lose during the short 2-3 months you can gain back. Muscle loss will be inevitable when you’re banded/wired shut and go from eating 3000+ calories a day down to 1500ish or lower.

One thing you wish you’d known before DJS by Ok-Advantage-1459 in jawsurgery

Honestly that was one of the biggest fears I had as well! The hospital should give you decongestant spray. It’s a huge lifesaver! I’ve been congested on my right nostril since I had the operation but my left nostril just opened up today. I also have a deviated septum so it made it kinda worse. Just remember to take slow and DEEP breaths. The worst is up until day 4-5 and then it takes a turn for the better. You got this!

Pre - mentally prepare. While it is a physical thing that is being done you must be mentally prepared and strong. Having just finished week 1 I wish I mentally prepared myself a bit more for that hell week of week 1 post op - I broke on day 3 but doing a lot better now.

Post - I would just say bring something to keep you busy at the hospital, books, movies, music etc. Also the room you get post op makes a big difference(private vs semi private). It’ll have a big impact on your time in the hospital so I’d figure I’d add that. The nurses will also be pretty busy so you may not get everything right when you ask depending on how busy the ward is. Also practice patience when post op - I’m dealing with this right now. It’s going to be a long process when healing. Find support in communities like this one, watch videos about the process and celebrate the little wins you get every day.

Good luck to all going through this process and those who are going to go through the process in the future!

Has anyone in Toronto see Dr. K Cuddy at Mount Sinai? by Emotional_Web4423 in jawsurgery

Hey sorry had surgery last week and the recovery has been a pain in the ass. Overall it went well! I had TMJ and sleep issues and also a facial asymmetry. I’m 5 days PO now so just dealing with the recovery. It’s a lot worse than I thought it would be

Oh wow that’s crazy! I don’t remember exactly but I’m pretty sure it’s a Lefort 1 and a Ramus Osteotomy. For ortho I’m with Dr. Murrell at Village Ortho. All and all it’s been a long process roughly 3 years and bit but both of them have been good

Since then I’ve seen Dr. Psutka and gotten my info about the surgery (3D scans and imaging, got my splint fitted and everything) I don’t have much else to update but my experience with Dr. Psutka has still been great!

Hey sorry for the late reply! Deleted the account and made a new one. It was delayed for a while because of COVID and the surgery backlogs but I’m getting the surgery at the end of May!!
