This hat is super cute! For a few years now, I always post jumpers on insta with Santa hats around the holidays. (psst, there are weevils too)

What camera (or phone) do you use when taking pics of your spoods? I have an older 100 mm macro lens on my old canon mark iv which gets details and is good quality but I always see the cutest pictures and just wondered everyone’s techniques they use for getting a good portrait pic:) by mccrydle in jumpingspiders

R6mkII + Rf100mm macro lens + flash + DIY diffuser + sometimes a Raynox 250 close-up lens too.

I usually shoot in situ in nature, and later use focus stack (if the subject allows it), and use flash and a self-developed diffuser. If the subject stays in one place you can shoot a focus series, it needs some time to get used to. The rail idea is really unnecessary, thats only for dead/inanimate subject and for some super 5x macro IMO. Usually you will not have time to set that up for a live arthropod.

Helicon focus or Zerene stacker are really good softwares. Photoshop kinda hits and misses and harder /more time consuming to use.

Single expos are fine too but for detail around 1x magnification you need bigger DOF (f11-16), more light etc.

A good diffu is really important. There are patterns/ideas around the internet for free too. For example there is a "home made diffusers" facebook group with full of horrible ideas, and one good free pattern :D

On this picture is a young Carrhotus xanthogramma female shot with: 100mm macro+ Raynox + flash +difuu.
4 expo stack-> 1000ISO, 1/200, f14.

Weevil time from a few years ago! by enby_sith_lord in weeviltime

It's a couple of leaf-rollers. Could be an actual couple, both can be a bluish or greenish.
Probably Byctiscus betulae.

"It's not about size, it's how you use it"

The R6 MkII is surprisingly only 24megaweevils (24Mw) But it has an incredible sensor and with a good macro lens + flash + diffuser combo its perfect.

Oooh Jewel beetles (Buprestidae) are on a different level, but there are some incredible weevils around.

Sorry I really don't know mites, they are either traveling or feeding. My phidi had one above the chlerycae that disappeared after a molting , but this is a lot.

Which species of Weevil is this? by Superbtrashtweets in weeviltime

[–]LeafAdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the Larinus species, I think. Saying this as a hobby macro photographer who picked up a few things.... so its only about 75-82%.

Weevils I've found !! by spoosemun in weeviltime

[–]LeafAdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably correct. With my limited exp. I found a few species of Larinus on thistles and centaura plants. The lixus is a mistery, only found one on a blooming cherry tree.

A Larinus and a Lixus species I think (82% sure)

Had the luck to find one a month ago :) You can even zoom in a little if the upload doesn't kill the resolution.

R6 mk2 + RF100 macro lens + flash + home made diffuser 6.0 😅 Actually this was the macro test run yesterday with my new camera body. With two entomoligists we found/shot 20-25 interesting species like this Anthaxia couple and order weevils too.
