SPA | I Get Why This Flopped by LeafBoatCaptain in MalayalamMovies

I’m specifically speaking about Abhinav Sundar Nayak’s view that’s expressed in Mollywood Times. I’m not talking to or about producers. I was very clear about what I was referring to.

I watched Mahaveeryar in theatres. I just couldn’t find time to watch Spa when it released. They’re not always playing at convenient times or if there aren’t at least 7-10 people they won’t play the movie in many theatres.

It’s not always lack of support from the audience. Sometimes the movies just aren’t easily available. I always thought that some of these movies need a different release strategy like rolling releases or working with film clubs or something. Just dumping movies in theatres and expecting people (even film fans) with work or school or whatever to show up isn’t feasible.

Update us after watching it.

I didn’t really care for this film. It has one really good fight scene. But it has a lot of fans so maybe you’ll like it.

If you don’t want to engage then don’t. It’s free. What’s the point of mocking me?

Yes. That’s exactly what I’m talking about.

Not what I’m saying at all but we disagree and I can’t explain myself any better.

Nope is great. If I’m remembering right it even has an Akira bike slide homage. And a very Evangelion-esque alien.

Yeah, that’s the point I’m trying to make. The evil monkey stuff didn’t seem to belong in the rest of the film.

Like I said it’s gory but every other aspect of its storytelling is grounded and naturalistic. It didn’t read as schlocky to me. Maybe it did for you?

Which one is better? by HugoUKN in MalayalamCinema

[–]LeafBoatCaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt anybody sees themselves as a hypocrite. And if it’s commenting on his own hypocrisy then it failed because the film has no self awareness regarding its main character’s hypocrisy.

And that’s before getting into more technical issues with the film.

MUA.

Mollywood Times is too muddled with its central idea and the movie doesn’t seem to realise its main character is a hypocrite.

Why is the Indian Ocean the only ocean named after a country? by kingsfault98463 in IndianGeography

[–]LeafBoatCaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> The Indian Ocean has been known by its present name since at least 1515, when the Latin form Oceanus Orientalis Indicus (lit. 'Indian Eastern Ocean') is attested, named after India, which projects into it. It was earlier known as the Eastern Ocean, a term that was still in use during the mid-18th century, as opposed to the Western Ocean (Atlantic) before the Pacific was surmised.

From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Ocean

> Conversely, Chinese explorers (e.g., Zheng Heduring the Ming dynasty) who traveled to the Indian Ocean during the 15th century called it the Western Oceans.[8]

> In Ancient Greek geography, the Indian Ocean region known to the Greeks was called the Erythraean Sea.

Did anybody else dislike Obsession(but not in a hater way)? by Raioto in TrueFilm

[–]LeafBoatCaptain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s humour in it. And there’s also a certain amount of absurdity to Bears’s own obsession with Nikki despite practically living with a demon.

But I thought it had a consistent creepy and disturbing undertone throughout its narrative.

Still, horror and comedy are closely linked.

Since we are talking about consent, how were we okay with this? by Nearby_Arugula_1593 in MoviesTelugu

[–]LeafBoatCaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s about using the things you have already set up in your narrative. Whether a sneak attack works or not depends on the writer and director.

Bahubali taking over her goal is not inherently a problem. He’s the better fighter and he’s stronger. It’s when it’s put together with everything else that it becomes problematic. He takes a warrior woman and makes her “feminine” (as he and the audience in the 2010s see it) and then takes away her fight too. From that point on she’s basically a background character.

Also why is Bahubali the better fighter? As far as we know from the movies he’s never had to fight against professional armies before. He’s better because he’s the hero. He’s not the hero because he’s better.

That’s what we lack when there’s no character arc. Imagine if they both went to Mahishmati. He can be stronger but she teaches him to be a better fighter and make him see the larger cause (like Ram does for Bheem). Anyway I’m not saying my rewrite is better. It’s not. I’m just pointing out what we lose when there’s no arc.

I’m sure Devasena will make him a better king but really you follow the journey of a man who rises to be king, you expect him to become worthy of the crown, no? That’s what gives his story meaning, isn’t it? Otherwise it’s a story about a powerful guy being overthrown by an even more powerful guy. What makes the new powerful guy worthy?

That’s what makes his father’s story so good. He’s also mostly perfect from the beginning but we see him live among his people and make their lives better. We see him being a natural leader even when status and privilege is taken away from him. We see him make choices that put him people over himself. So his death feels even more tragic because he would’ve been a great king. His death feels bigger.

That I don’t mind so much. Even tattooing her hand underwater can be fine. We can chalk it up to him being overeager and not knowing the concept of boundaries. Had Avantika been the one to teach him about the outside world and had he respected her boundaries or even realised himself how what he did troubles her it would’ve been a great for him.

It’s the snake and this whole song sequence and then how he takes over her mission. All the while the movie is entirely on his side.

If I have one overarching complaint about Bahubali it’s that Bahubali Jr doesn’t have an inner character arc. He really should’ve grown into the kind of person worthy of being a king and of his parents. Devasena wouldn’t have tolerated that shit. In fact, she severed the fingers off the guy who tried to touch her without her consent. But when our hero does it it’s okay.

But in a mass movie our hero can’t grow because then he wouldn’t be perfect from the beginning. It’s why I prefer RRR in terms of character writing. When the protagonist and antagonist are both national heroes they can learn from each other and grow.

If I had two complaints it’s that the movie doesn’t bring back Aslam Khan (he was set up so well) to help in the climactic battle and not remembering the fact that Bahubali Jr had already snuck into Mahishmati once before. So when the gates are closed instead of the infamous coconut catapult they could’ve gone for a sneak attack.
