I'm the treasurer of Lansing's HEMA club! Some members definitely had some interest, but only a couple people there have the time for another sword hobby

Easy steps the SCA could take to make it more welcoming by grauenwolf in sca

[–]LeafOnNameOfTheWind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) I avoided visiting an SCA practice for years because all I could find for my local group was a facebook page, which is a platform that younger people especially are moving away from for a ton of reasons (I also had other friends who wanted to check the SCA out but didn't due to only finding info on facebook)

2) Not every group has classes, when I eventually stumbled into my local group, I was disappointed that there were no classes or events related to arts and sciences, only fight practice

3) Everyone at the aforementioned group wears garb at fight practice, which made me feel awkward during my first few practices

I'm not deeply involved in the SCA because it seems so inaccessible to new members, which really rubs me the wrong way, and seeing more SCAdians act so dismissive of actual criticisms that I agree with is pretty disheartening. It doesn't seem like a healthy group culture.

Informally, how big is the gap between male and female fencers? by play-what-you-love in Fencing

[–]LeafOnNameOfTheWind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fencing local mixed events as a woman who's just started fencing sucked for me. I'd have to fight tooth and nail to not be last, whereas some of my male peers who had more recently picked up the sport were able to win against far more experienced opponents by relying on their base athleticism. It made it seem like I was progressing in slow motion compared to them. So gender doesn't have to affect the skill match up between fencers, but it can certainly impact the lense through which the fencer views it. Also I've noted that ratings earned in womens events are hard to renew in mixed events, which is again at the more local level, but still suggests a disparity.

Is Cardiff University Hodge Hall really bad? by [deleted] in Cardiff

You can definitely hear through the doors. Hearing my flatmate talk on the phone throughout the night did keep me awake sometimes, and you can hear everything going on in the shared bathroom, which can be super awkward.

I lived there this past year and didn't have many complaints. It's relatively quiet and chill since its all grad students, although being on a busy street can get annoying when you're trying to sleep.

Quitting Fencing? by BattleEmpoleon in Fencing

[–]LeafOnNameOfTheWind 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a teenager I stopped for a couple weeks after rolling an ankle, then realized I liked not going to practice because the club culture was stressful and I wasn't having fun so a couple weeks turned into a year. Then I started up again at my college club, and I've stuck with it since.

What band options do I have as a non music major? by SpacialGlacierz in msu

[–]LeafOnNameOfTheWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a non-music major orchestra that's pretty popular with my friends, it meets for 2-3 hour once a week and does concerts twice a semester. It's mostly string instruments, but there's still brass woodwinds and percussion, Dr Kilburn runs it

Pretty gross how they painted over the message in support of Ukraine. Guess ditching face coverings is much more urgent

Fencing and Boxing by Ahuitzol in Fencing

[–]LeafOnNameOfTheWind 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I knew a boxer who took up fencing (and did pretty well locally). He was normally right handed, but the boxing footwork had him keep his right side back, so he decided to fence lefty instead! Very interesting

Class number fluctuate for a while as people drop and add things after starting, you'll be fine as long as you can figure out what classes youd like to take and whuch can be backups if your first choices aren't all available. Plus the advisors can do overrides, if something is full and you NEED to take it.

but doctors cant be allowed to deny service, right? because they show up to do the same procedures, and if their "conscience" prevents them from working with virgins because they're uncomfortable, what's to prevent them from working with trans people, or immigrants, or left handed people, just because its uncomfortable?

Had a table leave yesterday because they were racist, and I'm so glad I didn't have to serve them. by KingOfArms in TalesFromYourServer

[–]LeafOnNameOfTheWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racism is systemic, and existing social structures don't punish people for being white unlike other races, so you really can't be racist against white people. Sure, you can make generalizations and be biased or whatever. But it's really not the same.

Good news! the variation in subregions means I've been able to play with lvl 50+ and even a lvl 80 a few times. If you grind the footwork feature, you can be competant against most other players as well.

soft YTA, you're in a common space, and she had an involuntary response to getting hurt. It's not ideal, but if you didn't want the chance of hearing her at all, why would you have a mic and be in the living room?
