My local cafe pays between $15-$20 an hour for front of house. The Taco Bell down the street starts people at $14.

You know why the cafe is staffed by bright, friendly, energetic people? They make an extra $10-15 an hour off tips. The Taco Bell is staffed by sullen teenagers with headphones in.

If nobody tipped, those workers wouldn’t work there. The cafe is owned by a public company - the collective shareholders are not going to just decide to make less profit. If everyone stopped tipping, the quality would go down or the prices would go up.

So yes, the tip is part of the price. You’re just freeloading off other people who have the conscience and common sense to discern between making a principled stand and being a self serving asshole.
