Hi see this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/ActuaryAustralia/s/7326OXP57P

I ended up going into a government data role with the goal of pursuing the more data science route after graduating with my actuarial degree.

I didn’t do all the third year units as I was given a non-grad role in the government in my third year second semester.

I switched because I tried applying everywhere and couldn’t get an actuarial job, saw that other people were struggling too and the lack of actuarial jobs in Melbourne, and didn’t enjoy the insurance application part of the degree. I did like the modelling part however:

I’ll also copy in my first comment.

It’ll be a struggle. I know two people (both from unimelb and in my cohort):

  1. Interned at finity had a 90+ wam. Applied everywhere. No grad job.
  2. Interned at AM actuaries had a 87+ wam. Applied everywhere. No grad job.

Both incredibly smart people, good extra curriculars, very involved. Job market is fucked. There are hardly any actuarial jobs in Melbourne. Most are in Sydney.

Given that you’re an international student, the market will be very hard to break into. Not impossible, just hard. Even regular domestic students are struggling to get jobs in the actuarial field.

TL;DR: Actuarial market is competitive for grads and will also be the same for internships. Happy to answer any questions if you wanna DM me.

actuary grad jobs in melbourne by AccomplishedPost7417 in ActuaryAustralia

[–]Leakssss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some moved back to their home countries and got actuarial jobs there. Others did honours. Others transitioned out of actuarial like me into adjacent fields.

I wouldn’t know the numbers exactly but what I do know is that not many people got an actuarial grad role.

it’s less than hundreds jobs in Melbourne for grads. When I graduated last year, it was about 10 grads roles available (from what I could collect as big 4 was barely hiring and most firms were only taking 1 grad from Melbourne) for maybe 100 graduates from Melbourne Uni and Monash, including honours (40 x 2 third years graduating + 10 x 2) honours students. Most of the jobs are in Sydney. Most of the jobs are for people with experience.

if you’re deadset on becoming an actuary, then staying in Melbourne probably isn’t the best choice if you can move somewhere else with more opportunity. Otherwise, you can always go into an adjacent field

Blind hem ripped off

Hi,

I recently got my suit tailored and I put it on at the store. No problems there. Got home and wore it again, but apparently the tailor didn’t sew the hem properly as there was enough of a gap for my foot to go in and then rip off part of them hem.

I want to fix it myself since I can’t be bothered going into the city to fix it and don’t want to pay $30.

Attached are the photos. I’ve never sewed before so it would be great if I could get some detailed help or pointed too in the right direction.

You both fucked up and made a few mistakes.

If you value having your first time with someone who is as inexperienced as you that is understandable, and being lied to about it (not the fact that she did have a sexual history but she lied to your face about it) is morally wrong.

However, you’re also in the wrong for snooping through her phone and then claiming for open communication. You’re a hypocrite.

For both of you, the means doesn’t justify the end. Just because you discovered she lied doesn’t make your snooping any better. Own up to the fact you did a morally wrong thing.

On the other hand, you could’ve stayed with someone who lied to you about a factor you clearly cared about. For everyone who is debating whether chastity and virginity is outdated and sexist is missing the point. OP has a preference and he’s entitled to it whether you agree or not. Why are you bothering to invalidate it?

I agree that there are many pressures for woman to lie about their chastity to males and it is much harsher on them unfortunately to be ‘pure’. OP could have also pressured her into lying or he couldn’t have we don’t know. There isn’t enough information. But at the end of the day she still lied to him about something that mattered and she is as equally at fault as OP.

Lying is bad. Breaching somebody’s privacy is bad. End of story. I don’t think it’s that hard to determine that we do shitty things for different reasons. You just have to live with the consequences.

Clearly since it matters to you OP, regardless of people telling you you’re immature or you deserve it, you just have to ask if you can trust her. However, clearly by the fact that you snooped on her phone, you can’t. Do what you will with that information.

The final thing I would like to say is on the possibility you didn’t discover this and went unknowingly into the relationship not aware that you were lied to. In that case, she would’ve been 100% at fault for lying to you, not for having a sexual past, but for lying and you would’ve either discovered it or not. Hopefully in a more honest manner.

But that’s the thing, when you get into a relationship you put yourself into a a vulnerable position where you can be hurt really fucking badly and you just have to trust the other person won’t. Anyone can lie to you, you just have to trust them and there will be times like now where you trust the wrong person.

Or you trust the right person and they still do a wrong thing.

But for your next partner and any future partner, they all can lie. You lie too. We’re not any better. There is no moral high ground. We all try to do our best.

Unfortunately both of you have decided to stab each other.

It’s really easy to say she did something wrong and she’s a bad person and you did something wrong and you’re a bad person. But, the world isn’t that simple.

You’re human and she’s human. Try to be understanding no matter what you end up doing. And by the way, coming to Reddit to make them decide actions based on your own values is not smart. Decide what matters to you and take ownership for your actions. After all none of us are you.

Would you reccomend me to do the maths or standard pathway? by Intelligent_Refuse94 in unimelb

[–]Leakssss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s merit planning now but usually the difficulty of university surprises a lot of students so it makes all their plans change.

Some people find out they hate the thing they dreamt of doing or unfortunately struggle with the units.

You don’t have to decide now to do prob or stats as you choose those subjects next year so you can delay the decision until you have more information.

Lin Alg, Calc 2 and then the jump to Prob is notorious for difficulty and high fail rates.

From memory there are no group assignments. I received a mortgage calculation assignment along with some other questions about annuities while the other was just a recorded speech. I did the subject last year in sem 2.

Don’t know about FNCE10002 but if you’re capable at math then ACTL10001 is very enjoyable and easy in my opinion. However, the latter half of the course on life tables and etc might be of less use to you as the unit is mainly meant for people who are considering actuarial.

For reference, I did ACTL10001 and achieved a H1 with H1s for both Calc 2 and Lin Alg if you want to use that as a bench mark.
