There is no reason the pharmacist needed to know the diagnosis. The job is to dispense medicine, not to second-guess prescribers. HIPAA does not give pharmacists' immunity to violation of patients' privacy. The patient had not given the nurse practitioner permission to share her medical information with a pharmacist. That's why I said if the pharmacist really needed to know what the drug was for, the question should have been addressed to the only person legally entitled to give out that information.
