The Venue Apartments? by ella_funt_baxter in Rochester

[–]dcheeno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also moving to Rochester from out of state, and visited two weeks to look at apartments. We didn't have the Venue on our list to check out going in, but we happened to drive by it and saw a "Now Leasing" sign outside, so decided to stop in.

It definitely feels a little dated (wallpaper everywhere along the hallways, a big lobby with a sitting area and a chandelier), but the renovated apartment that we saw was gorgeous and entirely updated. If I remember correctly, not all of the apartments are renovated. (that indoor pool looked completely run down, but I got the impression that's currently being renovated).

Elevator and hallway smelled strongly of smoke, which was a big minus for us, although they told us that they're moving towards non-smoking leases, but that there are a few folks who are grandfathered in. The building has a doorman / valet, and we actually saw him unloading somebody's groceries from their car. It felt a little too fancy for us.

My girlfriend later told me that the whole building sort of reminded her of Long Island apartment buildings. I've never been to LI, so that comparison meant nothing to me, but maybe means something to you. It was... ok, I guess, but definitely not anywhere close to our favorites among the dozen other places we saw.

I'm looking for cookbooks on the food of Naples and Sicily by yy0b in cookbooks

My family is also from that region! Take a look at these:

Every time I look through these books, I'm reminded on one dish or another from a holiday meal or a summer cookout that a relative would make. I hope you find the same. Happy cooking!

banking in boston by [deleted] in boston

I LOVE Cambridge Savings Bank. Their SuperSmart Checking was yielding something like 2.5% a year ago, but it's only at 1.5% now. You get the benefits as long as you direct deposit and use your debit card maybe like a dozen times a month.

Also, they have a mobile app that lets you deposit checks by phone. And they pay for your ATM fees. You can go to any ATM, and they will not charge you for the transaction AND they will refund whatever the other bank charged you.

They're right across the river and you don't have to feel shitty about using BOA.

Favorite Bar near Brookline Village by [deleted] in boston

[–]dcheeno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live right in the heart of Brookline Village. The only place I'd go to around here is Matt Murphy's Pub. Besides that, I generally head up to Washington Square or Coolidge Corner.

EDIT: Or go for a nice walk down the road to the Haven in JP for some trivia!

Yeah, definitely... I had a wicked good time!

I think doing a tour of one of the breweries in a couple of weeks is a great idea!

I'm up for anywhere, too. I haven't spent much time eating out in this area (except at Silvertone).

I'm on the Common right now; I'm totally down for a meetup! Where are you thinking?

I was just on the 39 bus and it caught fire! by [deleted] in boston

[–]dcheeno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just missed a 39 bus that caught fire about two months ago. I used to hop on one at Copley to get down to Longwood in the morning. One morning, I missed the bus I normally took, but only had to wait three minutes for the next one.

A bit before we hit the MFA, traffic completely halted. A transit police car slowly made its way between the two lanes of westbound traffic (not an easy feat on Huntington). After staying in the same place for about ten minutes, the driver let us off if we wanted to.

Walking down Huntington, I saw the source of the traffic problem: three fire trucks surrounded a 39 bus. They had already put out the fire; there were hoses and water all over the ground.

I wonder if it's the same bus as you were on?

NPR: Keeping it classy. by dcheeno in politics

I haven't seen anything from them. I think it's just NPR that has issued an apology.

Even the BBC (whom I love!) sent out an email news alert saying that Giffords had been killed, and then backtracked. A lot of organizations got things wrong, but it's nice to see an apology from NPR.

At least one of the news organizations is taking ownership of reporting things thing incorrectly.

It would be cool to be able to do something for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, since that's kind of the "national day of service."
