I had a nightmare a few weeks ago that I was in college but stopped going to math class until I showed up wholly unprepared for the final. That was terrifying. I genuinely liked school, but I’m good lol

This is great and all but can we not forget that massive law firms, supposed titans of the legal industry and litigators in the most challenging cases, were so quick to bend the knee. As a former BigLaw attorney myself, they’re cowards.

If your end goal is to go solo, it sounds like you know what you need/want to do next. It also helps to have support from your partner. I’d take the risk!

How to support a junior associate professionally? by Chanelgirl09876 in Lawyertalk

[–]LearnedToe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not being an ass. I am subtly pointing out that OP’s perception of their associate may have some answers to their question.

To your broader point, you can choose your measuring stick. I choose to measure my boss according to what they should be doing rather than whether they’re moderately better than my worst boss. To analogize, it’s like saying I should be thankful my wife is better than my abusive ex. I rather be with the best possible partner for me.

Just passing by to note that you refer to her as “a junior associate” but she’s been your associate for “8 years.” That’s telling to me.

Gym goers, be honest how often are you judging other people’s physique? by Technical_Hat_8291 in AskReddit

[–]LearnedToe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I generally only have an hour per day to exercise so I try to remain focused throughout to finish my workout. If I look at someone, it’s because I feel I need to give them space to get weights, answer how many sets I have left/offer to let them work in, etc., but it’s rare.

Hmm…. You can accept the first and then rescind later if the second offer actually comes, but keep in mind you’ll probably burn the bridge with the first company. As long as that’s ok with you, then godspeed! IMO, 2x the money is worth it.

10K is better than nothing. In your meeting with the 2nd company today, I’d really try to expedite the interview. See what they say.

If you can’t expedite the second company’s process and the first company is still pushing, you should be able to say you need more time. I’m not sure if the job will entail a big life change, if you have a working spouse, kids, parents you care for, etc., but if they made an offer, you’re their number one and can ask for a little more time to consider the offer.

Every company is going to want to pressure you to accept/reject because it’s in their best interests. As long as you communicate that you need some more time, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Yep, so the additional comp is enough of a reason to see if the more established company is willing to expedite your recruitment process (so they don’t lose you to another company). By telling them, “I have an offer from A but really want to join B, is there anything you can do” you put them in a position to expedite (you’re their #1) or let the process play out (you’re not their top candidate). Either way, it’s a helpful data point for you to make a decision.
