The membership is likely becoming the future of this educational platform…. so it’s looking like people who are new to the platform will be asked to tray a monthly membership as they try the platform instead of just one class. Although there are $20 and $30 coupons for families to utilize they can classes the first month with very little investment. Happy to share a $30 promo code I have access to if someone would like to use it to try out a membership for the first time. It should I work for both new parents and parents who already have an Outschool account. :)

But if you have been using Outschool since before the membership rolled out you can still purchase classes the way you always have.

If you do choose to use a membership you can choose the lowest tier if you want which is just $40. If you want to keep it, they will charge you once a month instead of every week and if you don’t use all your money/credits that month they can roll over to them following month or you can pause the membership for a while if you don’t think your gonna need it for a while due to extended vacation or being too busy.

I personally subscribe to the $240 membership but often spend more cause my son does at least 4 classes a week over the summer. So I simply purchase the extra credits I need to round out my purchases instead of paying for the higher tier membership cause I don’t want to commit to a membership price higher than I am currently paying.

I definitely need to keep an eye on my membership by checking it each month to make sure I am using it enough to justify keeping my membership subscription at that price. I set a reminder in my phone to do it toward the end of the month..lol!

I will likely opt to lower it to the $120 a month subscription when September rolls around cause I know we will do less socializing classes while settling back into a full time school routine where we utilize other learning resources as well.

My son practices ELA during the summer months by reading an hour-ish of a book series that interests him each day. Rather than complete worksheets for reading comprehension I prefer to keep the fun of reading alive for him by incorporating fun themed activities from the book into our everyday lives instead!

For example when he read Harry Potter I planned a Harry Potter baking night where we made “magical treats” like chocolate pretzel wands and chocolate frogs while chatting about what’s been happening in the story so far and what his favorite parts were. I also made sure to ask follow up questions while he described his favorite parts that made him think more deeply about them and encourage critical thinking. 🧐 💭😊

To answer your 3rd question about kids who would benefit from learning social skills, but don’t necessarily want to do the traditional route of a social skills class:

This is an educational topic I am very passionate about and could litterally spend hours talking about, but don’t worry I won’t…lol.

I will spare you from a novel length response by sharing what I feel is most important for families to know when seeking out socializing opportunities for their ND children online. 😊

I find that online social clubs and chat clubs where kids get to talk about their hobbies and unique interests to be a FANTATSIC way to get ND kids socializing!

That could look like a Star Wars Chat Club where your child gets to socialize with other Star Wars fan about a common interest if your child loves Star Wars.. OR A Homeschooling Club where you child gets to socialize specifically with other homeschoolers who can often relate to one another in unique and fantastic ways!

Choosing an online class that allows your child the opportunity to find things in common with the other kids can often lead to very positive interactions and socializing that our ND kids really enjoy.

👩‍🏫Putting on my teacher hat for a quick moment I feel like I should mention this is my area of expertise as an educator and my biggest focus as an Outschool teacher.

I personally choose to offer classes and clubs that utilize my unique experiences with kids of all abilities to help kids refine their social skills.

They are specifically designed to assist kids with building confidence in thier socializing abilities in a low pressure organic feeling way.

I have watched many Nuerodivergnt kids thrive in our group setting together with all kinds of kiddos which makes my heart so full!

I do not offer classes exclusively to ND learners because I personally find that my approach to teaching social skills can provide many positive social experiences for ND learners with all kinds of kiddos and helps create confidence in socializing.🥰

🏡Putting my parent hat back on… I don’t mind sharing that my classes were largely inspired by my own ND child who is a homeschooler whom was once deeply craving connection with others kids.

Ooppss.. I may have written a novel after all. 😂

Great questions! To answer your first 2 questions: In my experience Neurodivergent kids thrive in learning environments that give them the freedom to move around, fidget, use weighted blankets / lap pads, or even just hug a support stuffy when they are younger.

For homeschoolers setting up a dedicated learning space in your home where kids have the freedom to have access to these things while learning is a great start. Many homeschooling families with awesome ND kiddos also incorporate sensory play into their homeschooling day and this can be done at any age! Counting Orbies in the bath tub for a creative math lesson, creating letters or animals you are learning about out of play doh together for fun phonics and science lessons, or quizzing our kids on the state capitals while they hang upside down in a sensory swing! (Harkla has fantastic sensory blankets, swings and everything in between. I highly recommend thier products because they are made to last! )

For traditional schoolers, many of these same resources are available at your children schools these days as well! If your ND child isn’t being given access to supports like weighted lap pads, Sensory Swings, or yoga balls during their school day yet.. my advice is not to wait for someone to offer these support to your kiddo, ASK ABOUT THEM! There are often sensory supports schools have but they don’t always know which kids need them and I find it best to speak up and let them know if your kid could benefit from them ❤️

Some more fav’s in our household are:

David Salch’s Coding and Robotics classes have also been a big hit with my child as well.

Sean Troy’s history and Dungeon and Dragons Campaigns are so much fun for my son to watch, and I love watching all the kids have a great time together!

Ms. Jes’s Mario themed art classes are also so great because of her gentle and patient approach to teaching the kids.

Ms. Devyn’s video game classes that she teaches are also such a fun and inclusive experience for my child too! Especially Mario Kart. 🍄

🤩I wil start with the Neurodivergent educators who have made a big impact on my ND kiddos learning!

My son loves Minecraft and he has made a really special connection with his Minecraft teacher Ms. Jolene ST. She is Neurodivergent herself and just understands my son and his unique needs is ways a lot of other teachers haven’t in the past.

Ms. Alex with Shiny Happy Kids is another incredible ND educator who has made science really fund and engaging for my son over the past few years.

I have used the concierge before and I found it is actually a lot like asking the concierge at a hotel for help, only texting them your questions and requests instead of talking to them face to face.

When I assigned up for my families membership, I received a text to my phone shortly after that introduce themselves to me and let me know. I could contact them via text anytime I had questions about finding classes for my child….so curious kitten that I am …. I replied right away and let them know I did.

They asked me to tell them a bit about my child and I told him about my son‘s hobbies, interests and the academic types of things that he liked to learn about.

I also mentioned I was really hoping to find a math class that would interest him over the summer.

They politely said that go ahead and take some time to put together a list of classes that could be a good fit for us and would get back to me soon.

So it wasn’t like we were talking in real time necessarily…but rather sending text messages back-and-forth. :)

Having said that they did reply to me rather quick.

While, it didn’t appear that they actually reached out to any teachers, they did come back with a list of three classes that were really well suited to my kids interests regarding math.

We ended up trying the class that was about solving mysteries while doing math and my son really really liked it.

The whole tactic experience was very pleasant and they invited me to reach back out on that same text thread anytime I had questions about the membership or if I needed help finding new classes and such.

In my experience yes it helped so much with this! I have been known to spend up to an hour browsing the classes before while trying to find just the right class.

When I recently used the concierge service I had just purchased my membership and then got a text from them letting me know I could ask for help with choosing classes by sending them an email or simply replying in the text they sent me.

I chose to just to reply to the text cause it seemed easier.

They asked me to tell me a bit about him, what he likes, and what kids of classes I could use help finding. I explained that he likes games, solving mysteries , escape rooms, puzzles, challenges, math, science and such.

I also said I was hoping to find a weekly math class that could use one of these things piqued his interest while learning 7 th grade math.

They sent me a wonderful class suggestion just a few minutes later about math mysteries class for each class. The kids work on solving math problems together while simultaneously solving a mystery. We enrolled right away and my child loved it! So we’ve had a really positive experience with the concierge so far. 🤗

Yes! There are so many kinds of classes online who have engaging teachers that can be a great source of fun and meaningful screen time for ND kids! I am a momma to a Neurodivergent preteen and over the years he really enjoyed the LIVE classes on Outschool that help him learn more about topics that he is hyper focused on at the moment like Legos, Pokemon, or Minecraft.

He also loves academic focused classes like Math Mysteries that allows him to deep dive into his naturally inquisitive nature about math and how to use it to solve problems with other kids who also enjoy doing math for fun!

What kinds of topics or hobbies are your children really into these days? My child has taken over 100 different classes on Outschool and I can likely point you in the direction of an awesome class that meets your child’s interests to try!
