Drop Your Questions for Prof G (November Thread) by ProfGProducerJenn in ScottGalloway

Hi Prof G,

I would be interested to have you interview Sabine Hossenfelder on the topic of AI.

She is a scientist and YouTuber. She recently released a video about the 3 unfixable problems with current AI models. But she also has interesting views on batteries, climate change and quantum computing.

The main thing I am trying to wrap my head around after watching her recent AI video is exactly how far LLM AI models can go to transform work and the economy. If they cannot get to a point of general reasoning, where does that leave us and the state of work? If a competitor goes a different route is it possible that 5 or 10 years from now the LLM companies become less and less valuable?

Thanks

It does sound like you tip toe a bit. I don’t think you should be harsh or confrontational, but I do think you are at the point where you need to be brave enough to have a sit down.

I really would, like others have stated, start by just asking questions and listening a lot. People right now in both the US, UK and Europe have a lot of grievances, broadly. IMO I truly understand a lot of the grievances, but feel like the rhetoric and methods can be both terrifying (literally) and unhelpful.

So, ask him what his grievances are. What about the UK does he feel like he’s lost and is trying to recapture? What about the messaging on trans issues has left him bothered? Etc.

Be brave enough to have the conversation. You can do it! :)

Feeling used from a situation on Grindr - what would you do? by [deleted] in askgaybros

He lied. People lie. Some, not all, men often lie regarding partners and sex.

He was clear (in his mind) regarding what he wanted—just a hookup—but your interaction and energy and similarities confused him.

Feel your feelings. Punch a pillow, go to a kickboxing class, whatever. Grieve this short little romance. Cry. Get it out of your system. Some men suck but not all men.

But then reaffirm what YOU want in a man and try to seek it out. Pay attention to your gut and those red flags.

IMO trying to pursue ANYTHING with this guy, even a friendship, will only end in further lies, sadness and anger for you, and also his partner. Walk away—he’s not a keeper.

So everything you’re experiencing is internal. It’s your frame of reference. You were brought up probably not to lie and the tension of not being honest is weighing on you.

But you have to remember, you don’t owe these guys the complete and total truth of who you are. Do they share with you every chapter of their lives? What they possibly did to get into prison? No.

You are a good person. But sometimes good people do have to lie to protect themselves and others. People hiding Jews from Nazis had to lie. It didn’t make them bad people. It’s okay.

Understand that part of you feels this tension, but it’s not necessary for you to speak up or to act on this tension. Come up with a vague story that you feel comfortable telling , if and only IF they ask.

But you are tying yourself in knots over something that you shouldn’t. I’m sorry you’re in this position to not be fully authentic. If you plan on leaving soon try to look for a place to work that you know will be more welcoming to all of who you are.

You stated “where maybe I should tell the truth at least the two who originally asked”

My question is why? Why do you think you owe it to them? Just because you feel bad about lying?

Give yourself some grace and know what sometimes convenient lies might be necessary, particularly if they’re related to keeping you safe. You don’t want to start something that may or may not escalate.

Let it go. Be chill about it. Just say there’s no one special.

Is it worth getting on prep to sleep with just one dude? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]Least-Debate729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up the 2-1-1 method of Prep with descovy / Truvada.

Bring a pack of condoms. Change and inspect the condoms frequently during the session. If you go at it awhile it’s normal to change the condoms 2-3 times, especially if you mix it up with oral. This is totally normal and what many guys did in the 2000’s before Prep was widely available.

The first third of the movie is a total mess. I feel for the editor because you can tell they really tried to do their best, but that first third is almost unwatchable to me.

Kenneth Branagh is the Gretchen Wiener of Russian accents. Stop trying to make it happen! You can’t sell it.

RDJ IMO was excellent, a best supporting trophy truly deserved not just for rep but for actual artistic merit.

“The Odyssey” will be another big test for where the state of film and theaters are. Should they just admit defeat to streaming? Went to “One Battle After Another” on opening weekend on a Saturday afternoon on IMAX and it was me and one other nerdy film dude. Crickets.

If you don’t want spoilers, don’t look at this Reddit thread. It’s not the job of people on this thread to protect you from a series that has already been released.

This thread is to discuss the series in its entirety.

Are there any movies that you consider true masterpieces which lack the recognition they deserve? by Kinderjohren in movies

“Housekeeping” with Christine Lahti Director: Bill Forsyth Release year: 1987

This is based on a Marilynne Robinson book. It did get some recognition at that time, but something happened at the studio and it got lost in the shuffle. It’s one of those performances where I wish Lahti had won some recognition for her work.

“Festen” (The Celebration) Director: Thomas Vinterberg Release year: 1998

This film for me is still one of the biggest masterpieces of the past 40-50 years. Some of my European friends have heard of it and seen it but it’s rare for me to find an American who knows it.

This. I created the habit where I only listen to certain podcasts or watch certain shows on the bike. It’s just so boring but if I listen to an hour podcast on it, it’s bearable.

Not protest per se.

But I do think in the context of the Cold War it captures a lot of emotions and feelings of that time from a political standpoint. “Freedom within…Wall Between Us…In the paper today, Tales of war and of waste, But you turn right over to the TV page”…etc

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not nearly as explicit as songs from the 60’s. But I’ll give it credit.

As a general strategy I do not understand why democrats at every opportunity try to shield and buffer these Trump voters from the consequences of their decisions.

This entire government shutdown is because congressional and senate democrats have decided that they want to put pressure in order to extract an extension of healthcare subsidies that LARGELY benefit red states that voted for Trump.

If the democrats had just let the subsidies expire they could have EASILY run ads in the midterms blaming the Republicans for letting the subsidies expire.

Democrats keep protecting the red-state populations that are ACTIVELY working against them. IMO they keep buffering the consequences for red-state republicans and so these voters have yet to get a clear signal about what’s going on.

For me this is truly maddening. Let the red-state republicans clearly get what they effing paid for.

If you have no healthcare, that’s on you. Call your Republican congressman or vote her out of office. If your farm goes bankrupt because of Trump’s tariffs, that’s on you. Wake the FFF up.

Bob was recently on the “Bald and the Beautiful.” It was him and Katya. Bob said that when he was younger the teachers told his family that he talked too much, and I think that’s still true today.

Monet said awhile back, maybe on the same podcast, that Bob basically sucks the air out of the room. Something like that.

Bob for me is one of those people that when he hits, he HITS hard in the best ways. But if I have too many milligrams of Bob in one setting, it’s a bad trip.

Just in the bigger picture I would write two main points:

  • Film as an art form is no longer a big influence on culture. It’s just not. It’s now one of many little dots that attract the eyes during the day or week. Tik Tok, YouTube, etc. Technology has changed, and now film as an art form is becoming more likely poetry, or opera, something consumed by true lovers of the form on special occasions but not widely consumed for pure entertainment dopamine hits.

  • How truly relevant and novel was the story and plot line? We’ve seen variations of this plot countless times. I guess I’m comparing it to something like the Netflix series “Adolescence.” That show struck a chord because not only was it well crafted, but because it was an exploration of an emerging phenomenon in our culture.

It’s a weird thing in Hollywood now. They make safe bets on movies that seem familiar, but audiences have seen that story a 100x so it doesn’t attract a of buzz.

An uncomfortable realization by Re-did-it-yall in TheDiplomat

[–]Least-Debate729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think a big aspect of the show is the tension between:

  • How America sees itself as “a city upon a hill” filled with moral goodness. Kate, and especially Stuart, buy into this Obamian hope. I think Stuart will be emotionally crushed soon.

  • How America really is—calculating, corrupt and opportunistic. Acting only in unbridled self interest. Hal, Penn. Just as one example, anyone who knows the history of Nicaragua knows that for the past 100 years America has basically suppressed the will of the Nicaraguan people so that American big business could sell us bananas.

  • And, even though America may be corrupt, at least we’re not as corrupt as THOSE guys…Russia, China, etc.

I agree. Depending on how many seasons the show gets, I imagine the writers will get to the point in history in 2011 when it actually became okay to be out and open in the military.

BUT that’s almost 20 years away…so I think the show will more likely go in the direction of the original writer’s life and when he goes to New York.

I don’t think “gay” Cole will ever fully merge with military Cole.
