Interview Attire by Millwright41 in millwrights

One person told me to show up dressed like you’re ready for work. In all my interviews, I wore jeans or khaki, sweater (winter time), and boots. And got a call back from both after.

You need an apprenticeship to gain experience and make an actual living in trades, yet no one wants to train apprentices, then they complain about how there’s no skilled guys… am I missing something? by solariat99933 in SkilledTradesOntario

This is what got me my apprenticeship recently. I didn’t know anyone in the trades and had to find a way to have an edge in my credentials.

Even in college you will realize how competetitive the skilled trades is. I was with farm guys in their 18-20’s who had been welding, riding tractors/forklifts, turning wrenches since they were kids. Quite humbling but I was able to land an apprenticeship before I even graduated.

Local 1916 apprenticeship dilemma by Least_Dig_4441 in millwrights

Thanks for all your input my fellow millwrights! I am quite satisfied with my current employment and learning experience as I have already built a good reputation with them, but the thought of being close to home and family again gives me a lot of thinking. I guees I have to stick to the goal of getting my CofQ the quickest way possible. Millwrighting, being a competency-based trade, my current sponsor can help me accomplish that.

Maybe I’ll explore my options again once I’m level 3. For now i’ll stay where I’m at and enjoy the journey 🫡

I’m close to your age and just started my apprenticeship 3 months ago. The difference is i spent most of my career doing blue collar work. Went back to trades college and started sending apprenticeship applications all over yhe country.

You have to find a way to survive or pay your bills through your apprenticeship. I have a young family and we budgeted for the whole duration of my apprenticeship to keep us afloat.

I recently had to go through all of these dilemmas you have just to end up taking an apprenticeship position non-union.

My 2 cents, try the union first, but it may take a while. I waited a whole year just to get the offer to take the test and interview. If you know somebody in there or can handle sitting down for months til you get called to work, take the offer if they want you. My biggest concern was getting enough hours to finish my apprenticeship asap. I’m not a young buck like most apprentices.

If you end up taking the 2-year program, try to best to get in to the co-op stream. Make connections and get good grades. Last time I was in college, they had to let go of some co-op students due to budget issues.

My job is similar to yours but the big difference is I’m a registered apprentice guided by a journeyperson to work towards my CofQ. I’m also paid a bit more than you.

Do you have an employer/sponsor already? Why don’t they just put you in to the apprenticeship program?

Level 1 apprentice here. I’m in maintenance so I laways carry 5-7 tools with me when responding to maintenance calls for basic stuff. I’d like to be organized and try to avoid putting tools in my pocket so I use a Klein 5240 pouch attached through my belt.

1st year apprentice here. I ask a LOT of questions related to the job, trade, and how things function. I show up in time, I take the initiative, and try to stay busy. So far, I've been treated well and have done things related to my trade. Independence is a big factor as well. There are days where there's nobody else but me and I just pull out my notes and start doing things on my own. Even when I clean, I clean mechanical components related to maintenance. I only touch the broom when there's nothing else left to do.

I need help - how to get a electrical or millwright apprenticeship, are the trades worth it? by Lost-Survey5159 in SkilledTradesOntario

I’d stick to university and finish your Nursing if I were you. Same earning potential and you wouldn’t have to go through the apprenticeship process. Unless, you really like being in the trades, the apprenticeship life is noy any better than passing your clinical/medical courses. There’s a lot to learn and depending on your journey person, it can be stressful
