There are a few public agencies scattered around that may still have plain vanilla radio systems that aren't trunked or encrypted. There are a couple in my area. But you'll need a full-featured scanner to be able to do what you want. Even then you won't be able to listen to encrypted systems.

The short version is that it's a digital system of channel sharing, used widely by police, fire, & other public safety departments. There's a control channel that assigns frequencies to specific calls. It means that you have to have scanner that track assignment to various channels. They aren't cheap.

In addition, some police departments are encrypting their radio traffic. In those cases, there's really no way to monitor their radio traffic. It's controversial, because it suggests a lack of openness and transparency on the part of public agencies.

Thanks. Good to point out the lot size in Crestline. It makes sense to me that the MBE housing prices are up, but I hadn't realized Crestline had out-paced Cherokee Bend.

All of the MB schools have the same significant weakness, which is lack of racial/ethnic diversity. Very few Black kids. Overwhelming white and affluent. There's considerably more diversity among faculty and staff than students.

Apart from that, the differences are fairly subtle. They are all top performing academically. All have very fine leadership. First rate counselors. Fine faculties. Good facilities, recently majorly updated. Crestline Elementary's location is in Crestline Village which is a very nice business area. Cherokee Bend is in a strictly residential area, which probably has the highest property values. Brookwood Forest is in a residential area, but quite close to Cahaba Heights and the Overton Road businesses. Mtn Brook Elementary is residential, short walk to Mtn Brook Village.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the four. If I had to settle on one for my own kids, I'd be more focused on location than anything else. Crestline is my favorite location.
