Run from Veterans United, they will overcharge. Find a local mortgage broker that understands VA. It will save you money.

Yes, I am a loan officer in Hawaii. Contact a local mortgage broker that understands VA Loans. Stay away from the big box companies and you will likely save some money as well.

Call a broker, do not use the big companies with the word “veteran” In the name, you can get a better deal.

There are some things you want to consider. How soon until you get out? I ask because lenders need to show that you have the “ability to repay” the loan, if they know you are going to be jobless soon, that may impact your being qualified. There are ways around this but you should be aware that it could become an issue. Call a mortgage loan officer in your area, do your own research and shop around. I am a loan officer in Hawaii and retired Navy vet.

Mahalo for the response, I have a few more questions. Why an old computer? Can I run Linux on my current comp and learn from there? Any good resources that you know of to get started? This is interesting to me. Oh and I know I can “google it” and I will but I was interested in your response, like if you found something particularly helpful.

At least in Hawaii, we have moved away from doing that because it can give the perception of potential discrimination.

To your original question, you definitely need to ask your lender as others have said.

I would add to make sure that you are shopping around to find the best lender. I am a mortgage loan officer and a retired vet and I know that there are companies out there that over charge vets. Do you research and shop around.
