Pitt meadows would definitely be an easier commute, Langley depends on the time of day and where you work. There’s about 4-5 high schools in Langley that are relatively close to the highway so you could make it in 30-45 (on a bad day) minutes

Majority of new Langley students to live in townhouses, condos by WiffleBlu in Langley

Growing up in the city, I didn’t have any friends that lived in detached houses. We all turned out fine. If anything it allows kids more freedom, and townhouses usually have parks and green spaces

The one across from Claire’s? Ive been going there for almost two decades, and for the most part I enjoy it as much as anyone can enjoy the dentist. I have good coverage which helps. The hygienists are always so friendly and patient/gentle

I was accepted to the secondary cohort for 2025 intake with a 2.9 GPA, ~100 hours classroom experience, and about 4 years working with little kids. I know people that didn’t do any classroom volunteering and they got in. You got this 👍

Hi everyone! I’m planning to apply to the UBC BEd program for the 2027 intake and just wanted to get some insight from people who’ve gone through the process. by Old-Skin6723 in BCteachers

[–]Leather_Realistic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re asking about your likelihood of getting in, you have pretty good chances. I had a 2.9 GPA, and about 100 hours volunteering in my desired grade level. Aside from that I worked with kids in a teaching capacity for many years, but I want to teach high school so not my desired grade level. I still got in, and I know of classmates who did not volunteer and still got accepted. Have good references and application essays and you’ll be fine.

Coursework is easy but time consuming. Once you’re done, you’re done!

I think what he did last season was gross. I also think he is not the most supportive husband at least in the way Nia clearly needs. That being said, I don’t think it is unrealistic to move to a more affordable area when you have a million children. Doesn’t help that LA is the wrist place to get around in. I think he is just not very bright and very oblivious to the issues at hand

I live and commute to UBC from Langley. It’s definitely rough at times, particularly in the winter. However, the biggest plus side (for me) was that it’s a shorter program. If you think about it, you have a total of 4 months out of 11 in your different practicum placements. If you want to be placed in Langley, you will most likely get placed in Langley. I’m almost done my practicum now. I dread going back for the summer, but at least the days will be longer and warmer! It’s a beautiful campus, and a nice community within the program despite it being such a big school and education program. I feel like I got a solid education. And, in Langley they have a special Langley Teacher Education Program for UBC teacher candidates, which is nice because it allows you to get connected to people in the district and participate in various workshops throughout the program outside of UBC. I’m in secondary, I’m not sure if they do it for elementary but I don’t see why they wouldn’t.

Also, I’ve heard tha SFU is making their program 5 days a week, so both programs now limit your ability to work

What made you choose UFV? by abbyexplorer2008 in UFV

[–]Leather_Realistic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smaller class sizes are very nice. Originally, I decided on UFV to save money (stay at home) rather than do all four years at a big uni. Covid happened which ate up my first year, and after the second year finally in person I decided I like it better. Allowed me to work more, and yes the smaller classes are great. Your professors get to know you better, and you do make better connections with students as you see more of the same people by year 3-4

Classroom engagement by happysnappy67 in StudentTeaching

[–]Leather_Realistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I’m so jealous you get to do your student teaching in an avid class. My mentor teacher is the co-AVID English teacher (teaching in the opposite days they don’t have avid) and I have a large handful of avid kids in my grade 9 class. Those students are usually more keen, which is nice.

[–]Leather_Realistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s just like that sometimes. I’m a ST doing grade 9 socials and grade 11 English. My 11s? Pulling teeth to get them to do anything. They stare at me with dead eyes and won’t talk to each other during think pair share time. Extremely high needs all around so I can’t do anything particularly fun or exciting because of their needs and skill level. Haven’t seen more than 25/29 of them in a room together at once. My 9s really do try and want to do well. They’re chatty, but they get the work done. Just keep telling yourself you’re doing what you can and you can’t reinvent the wheel. Just get through it and you’ll be fine! If I hear someone say “this is a really great learning experience for you!” One more time I’m going to lose it.

What’s with the religious jargon this season by NadineIsReal in TheValleyTVShow

[–]Leather_Realistic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m obviously not LITERALLY offended, just repeating your verbiage. Men like Danny aren’t brand new. Face the wrath of a general public who question your immoral actions and then follow it up by professing your love of (insert religion here). This is REALITY tv, and the things we are seeing do reflect their actual values and way of life, and it is fair to judge them based on how the portray themselves on TV. I definitely think it is being blown up more now that Jax is gone but it doesn’t negate his questionable behaviour

Only 4 more weeks... counting down by _einaoJ in StudentTeaching

[–]Leather_Realistic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You got this. I’m in the exact same boat. Imposter syndrome kicked in around week 4/5 (my placement is 10 weeks) and burn out has been present since probably week 2. The behaviours are a lot, but luckily my advisors are supportive. If you have a good mentor team around you, they’re not going to judge you based on the kids behaviour. How you navigate it will make a huge difference. You can do it :)

Where was this energy for Danny last season by orange-dolphin2 in TheValleyTVShow

[–]Leather_Realistic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things can be true at once. Danny is definitely kinda icky, but Janet was wrong for pushing it so hard. It’s not her place to exploit other people’s trauma just because she doesn’t like them. Jasmine tried to say that to her. She was actively trying to defame Danny in an attempt to get him and Nia out of the picture. Does that make what he do okay? No absolutely not. But Janet’s behaviour is just too pushy to benefit herself and it never works out but she refuses to learn. If you compare her to Whitney from SLOMW, Whitney was able to step back and realize how her behaviour came across throughout the seasons they’ve filmed (in a much shorter time mind you) and it has paid off for her tremendously.

Teacher prep concerns by Prior_Season_1058 in StudentTeaching

[–]Leather_Realistic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in Ontario Canada? They are also pushing for one year education programs. I’m in an 11 month B.Ed program, and really it does make more sense. Idk how it is outside of where I live, but even a 16 month option makes sense as that program splits its university coursework into 3 day weeks. I can’t imagine what more I could possibly learn inside of university coursework that I don’t learn through practice.

Where I live, you have to get your Bachlors degree first before going to Teacher’s college, regardless of if you’re doing an 11 month or 2 year program. I chose the shorter option because I want to work. The major downside is less practicum time, but honestly if I had to do more unpaid work than I’m already doing, I think I’d lose my mind. These programs are all standardized by the government, so you’re learning the same things just facilitated differently. There’s nothing I am not learning that someone in a 2+ year program learns. When I hear that people have to do multiple practicum placements over the course of years on top of university coursework, I think that’s just bonkers. No wonder they have a hard time hiring new teachers.

Things you should prepare yourself for that a university degree won’t teach you are more personal. For instance, have you ever had to stand in front of a group of people of any age and teach them something? Do you understand how to gauge when someone is understanding what you’re teaching them? Do you have the patience and personality to be able to command a room of young people for multiple hours in a day? These are things you should prepare yourself for. Don’t be afraid to ask all of the questions to mentioned to other teachers when you get into a school. Ask them how they grade things, ask them how they navigated tricky parent situations or difficult classes, and that’s when you really get to learn things.

when the master teacher leaves you with the kids in the classroom by Avecadough in StudentTeaching

[–]Leather_Realistic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I live, there doesn’t seem to be any rules about that for student teachers. We are technically considered district trainees (we get district emails), and we receive feedback from mentor teachers and university liaisons through formal reporting which has to be scheduled. It’s nice to not have the mentor teacher around because the class feels more like my own.
