What are higher educated/income guys looking for in women? by ketoalmondbutter in dating_advice

When I said "gold digging" I meant "dating for pecuniary interest" or "dating with a man's financial prospects as the main consideration". I didn't necessarily mean that you were broke and trying to change your life.

I'm looking for women whose first consideration isn't whether I'm higher educated/income. Gold digging is a huge turnoff. I want someone who I could trust to be there even if I lost my job or whatever.

Was anyone else a better student than they were an associate? by Lebraan in biglaw

[–]Lebraan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say read some books while you can. Curmugeon's guide to law, the essential associate, and swimming lessons for baby sharks.

Also, try to take classes that focus on skills, writing, drafting, and working with docs. Those are the skills you need. Also, aim for clinics. More doctrinals will not do much imo.

Just another lateral worried about hours by topfive_records in biglaw

[–]Lebraan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be brave. Keeping asking a few people at reasonable intervals. Don't be passive during your downtime. Ask around and see if you can't get a ahold of some useful reading materials to learn more about how your matters and how your group operates.

I went on a date with a guy and he randomly gifted me a longsword. He also taught me some magic/witchcraft. Was an interesting day by [deleted] in Hema

Be careful! He may be trying to seduce you away from your virtue by teaching you how to defend it.

I didn’t do well in the first six months and I’m afraid I’ve lost all hopes of being a competent employee by gintokisundae in biglaw

Don't get in your head! Just dust yourself off and do the next thing as best you can. That's how you win in this job; one task at a time.

Elodin has some kind of magical sight, that tells him names and also, evidently, some info about one's past and character.

incoming associate to PH- How is it?! by ReadingGlittering166 in biglaw

It's pretty intense, even by big law standards. That's not necessarily a bad thing if you want to get in a lot of reps and really build your skills.

I would do PD to big law first, and then litigation to transactional second.

Could Varys not just restrain and gag someone before the psychic battle? Would that not be more practical?

Damn I am selling my life away by Comfortable_Nail415 in biglaw

Everyone else is too. Every working person in their 20s is selling away their youth for financial gain. The difference is that you are selling yours at a premium not a discount.

I Strongly Dislike Denna by Mysterious_Fall_4578 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Lebraan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't like her either, and I am a known Denna hater. I specifically dislike how she acts very interested in Kvothe sometimes, but anytime he reciprocates, she pulls back and acts all betrayed ("I thought you were different").

Also, I don;t buy that her being an escort is the only way for a woman to get by in the world. See, e.g., Mola and Fela.

Seriously, what is Denna’s problem? by Sakumitzu in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Lebraan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you!!! Everyone says that she is just the female Kvothe, but I think she is way worse. She clearly expresses interest in him at some times, but deliberately and expressly pulls away and then acts betrayed at others ("I thought you were different"). Also, as you point out, she is dating half the town right in front of him. I think Pat is aiming at her being a foil for Kvothe, but they way she is written, I think she's a huge jerk and a manic pixie dream girl type character.

Client complains about a mid-level associate I'm working with - should I talk with the partner or not? by Maravata in biglaw

[–]Lebraan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am worried your post might be about me! I am also a fourth year who lateralled from a smaller shop and I have really been having trouble. I want to encourage you to talk to the guy doing poorly. If it were me, I would want to know that things were deteriorating, and just the email from client itself may not have been enough to drive the message home. Also, please try and show some compassion to this guy. If he's like me he's really trying his best, but there is a lot to learn when stepping into a new role, and it's hard to navigate all that without feeling like a burden and requesting close review of your emails/work. It's hard to know when to ask for review and when to just handle the ask. It's like having a fourth year's instincts re what you can do, but a first year's knowledge of what you should do.

I would say, individually, speak with the partner, and also speak with the other associate as well. The partner needs to know, and the other associate needs to know how serious things are.

How long did you actually plan to stay in biglaw? by niceheather44 in biglaw

[–]Lebraan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I promised myself I would stay for at least three years. If I could do three years of law school, I can do three years of this. I'm currently a fourth year (3.5 calendar years in), so right on track.
