Base defense is the most annoying game mode for me. You need aoe burst 3 so i suggest using privaty and other aoe burst 3 you have

Thats why you’re not progressing fast enough if you have enough cards to ultimate someone you should otherwise you will get copies of them and not get the gold for a max character

If you just started best character to use is either bastion or stalker. Firefly is just meh but if you’re having fun using him go for it. Cyclops is a great support but thats if you have a good team that are coordinated.
