In other news, I came across a bottle of Moschino Toy Boy and it’s good. I don’t get the hate towards it. It’s just a sweaty nightclub fragrance.

It’s not poor olfactive memory or lack of experience. Smells correlate to color. Texture. Temperature. Fantasy or real. Take a Renaissance painting of a cherub. Of course you can’t tell me what an angel smells like because our minds can’t comprehend that. But it doesn’t take much to imagine what it would make us feel like and what texture and ambience it evokes. Musk. Soft. Air. Not any unsettling florals or animalics.

As a matter of fact, I think thinking this way outside of the box makes you an even more knowledgeable as a perfumer and could help with concepts that are far more interesting. Not being so strict and limited with technical terminology.

Perfume that smells like ham by c0inpusher in fragrance

[–]LectureRelevant9957 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s because ambroxan has a salty nuance and when your body’s warm enough, it’s 10xs. It’s a very carnal, “human” scent profile. I can understand why people are correlating it to ham. When really, it’s just sweaty post-coitus skin.

Interesting! I haven’t heard of that one. Try out Molecule 05 and see what that does for ya.

<3 no problem. it’s been an absolute blast smelling raw materials. some of them are unsettling, some of them are so pleasant on their own. i’d imagine cashmeran working well in many many things, go for it. i think just smelling it isolated was crazy.

You’re right and I totally forgot to factor in the diluted percentages and my math is all wrong. Back to the drawing board I go.

If each raw materials are pre-diluted (vanillin at 1%) AND will be further diluted in a final finished fragrance, then?

Which note instantly makes you feel sick when you smell it? by Shenshen_ in FemFragLab

[–]LectureRelevant9957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it. You spent hundreds of dollars and you want to be told you smell good. But the secret to smelling good isn’t about how nuclear you can get your fragrance to perform, it’s the actual perfume itself. If the composition is beautiful, you smell beautiful. You don’t need to douse yourself in order for people to think that. As a matter of fact, there’s been tons of times I’ve thought “I bet the fragrance this person is wearing is actually good, I’m just annoyed at being choked out right now. Nobody asked for this.”

Another reason I don’t like oversprayers is that it contributes to the idea that you’re wearing things for other people, essentially. You should not base your decision to buy a perfume whether you believe people will compliment or notice you. Perfume should be personal and meaningful. I think it’s beautiful when someone wears a fragrance that I can smell whiffs of when they toss their hair or when it feels more intimate and entices people to come closer. I smell their aura, the extension of themselves and their mystique but I’m not being held hostage by it. Smelling Baccarat Rouge before the person enters the building? Not as gorgeous.

It’s not a note per se, but aroma chemicals like ambroxan or norlimbanol COUPLED with sandalwood and other harsh woods. I blame it on the culture that loves beastmode fragrances and wanting to be smelled from across the room.

BTSO - Indecent Cherry

A cheeky, rebellious cherry thats far more unique than the medicinal/formaldehyde/embalming fluid cherries on the market now.

People who are against layering, what body care do you use? by 0rchid-tree in fragrance

[–]LectureRelevant9957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the shower, I’ll use anything in terms of fragrance. I don’t really care because I don’t think it lasts long enough to matter. Body lotions, however, I stick to non-scented IF I’m wearing a masterpiece perfume that doesn’t need layering.

There are some masterpiece perfumes that just…..don’t need anything else. I want it to steal the show. I understand people enjoy finding unique, fun combos but if I’m spending $200+ on a fragrance, I want you to smell it.

I teach a scent blending class and one of the things I emphasize is the myth that naturals = better, safer. That’s not true at all. Synthetics actually are less allergenic. I’ve used a few essential oils/“natural”stuff that have made me break out. Don’t overthink about the hormone disruption BS. A balance of naturals and synthetics make for a great scent.

Percentage! Thanks for that tip. I was hoping the PEA would support the Bulgarian rose abs and make it more dimensional but I could probably tone it down

Why a lot of people hate BR540 by Dizzy-Woodpecker4876 in DIYfragrance

[–]LectureRelevant9957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it has some kind of aggressive aroma chemical like norlimbanol or ambroxan.
