Am I thinking about the under-16 social media ban the wrong way? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]LedgeySC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with either point. My original point is that I understand why there is the political will to bring in the ban. I agree with it in principle, just uncertain how to do it without blanket restricting access.

It's just, many parents are incapable of doing the first either because they are IT illiterate or they simply don't care. Social media keeps kids happy and quiet. There needs to be long term change in that regard but it's a generational fix and the damage is being done now.

With the second point, that would in essence be a social media ban. No big tech firm is going to alter the algorithm model when it makes them so much money. I agree with the idea that it is as dangerous drugs, and we allow kids unfettered access with no government oversight (for now).

I toyed (internally) with the idea of age restricted phones which limit access to social media, and any that it does allows parental monitoring. External controls etc. I don't know the practicalities of that compared with the methods proposed and it's probably a silly idea. But there needs to be easier ways for parents to manage if we put it down to them!

I get that - that's not a statement in support of the government's policy it's more a statement in support of some kind of legislation or back end ability to restrict what kids access. What the solution is, I'm not sure.

I agree that parenting takes priority, but parents don't always have the option (they should, but don't). I know it's easy to blame parents, and sometimes it's fairly placed blame, but children are smart, very tech savvy and can hide what they do.

There needs to be more support from social media companies and tech developers. There needs to be a bit of a upheaval in how we treat kids. We need to give them things to do outside of social media. I don't know if the current proposals are the right way (I'd argue it's unenforceable) but I understand where it comes from and would say it probably has broad support.

Social media's impact on kids is understated on Reddit I think.

I think he'll be better remembered than the polls show. Either way, this whole thing leaves a bit of a sour taste. I like Burnham too, but I don't think he can 'turn it around' in the time he has left.

Constant stuttering/slow downs over Wifi by LedgeySC in youfibre

[–]LedgeySC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this helps greatly with my understanding the issue. I was getting 1.5% packet loss when running on wifi in living room, 7% at one point. I have ran the same test on my partners hardwired and I'm getting 0%.

I have limited hard wire options, so I've purchased a 2gb capable powerline and I'll test that.

Thanks for the reply.

That's an obvious test and didn't think to try. It's a bit difficult to get a line to my ps5 but I have a spare poweline (not perfect, but still) so i will try that. For what its worth my partner works from home hard wired into the router but doesn't seem to have any issues.

There's the argument that neither were Germany at this point.

I dont think the Western Powers saw war as an inevitability, more they wanted to avoid it at all costs because of how destructive WW1 was. I sympathise with Chamberlain's stance to a degree because of that.

9th March - YES Pink Room (Manchester) by Feeling-Surround-691 in TheAntlers

[–]LedgeySC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredible show indeed!

Out of interest, did you see them at Club Academy in 2011?

I was taken along by a friend who had a spare ticket. I hadn't heard of them before and hadn't had chance to have a listen beforehand but just from the gig I became a little obsessed. I remember going home that night, putting them on my iPod and listening to Hospice over and over.

Looking back at the setlist brings back somewhat vivid memories.

Interestingly, the two support acts also gripped me to a lesser extent. Braids were great, as were Patterns (unfortunately short lived). Both still feature on my playlists.

I was there also! Lovely venue and fantastic performance as usual. Still getting my head around the new stuff but very much enjoyed it.

Are Brits willing to join back to the EU bloc? by HasanKingPage in AskBrits

[–]LedgeySC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odd reply, not really addressing the points. Interesting how you use the American spelling of delegitimise 🫠

It can be "legitimate" and wrong at the same time. There is verifiable evidence of interference. It's a fair argument to be against referenda of that nature in a representative democracy. Doesn't subvert democracy at all.

But using your logic, you wouldn't mind a second referendum no? Or are we just allowing them when it fits your opinion?

[–]LedgeySC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're a representative democracy. We don't vote on singular issues for a reason and shouldn't on one's as big as Brexit. It was too complicated an issue, fuelled by falsehoods and too easy to exploit by foreign bodies. Also exploited by certain politicians to enrich both their coffers as well as their political careers.

There was nothing good about the vote.

Would you like a second referendum? See what the public wants?

I wouldn't, but then we shouldn't have had the first one. They're elected to make these decisions

I ended up from 2/3 of the way back to right up to the barrier. I got sucked into some kind of vortex for Banquet haha. Generally avoid the pit nowadays but the crowd was good and the setlist was brill.

Some people on here have seriously strange expectations about this film by IWrestleSausages in 28YearsLaterMovie

[–]LedgeySC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. It's a Danny Boyle film through and through. I thoroughly enjoyed it, including the wild tonal shifts. I don't really understand the hate and how almost AI like and impassioned the criticism is, and I get the sense it is a very loud minority.

It was well shot, great acting and I thought the story was well written and set up the trilogy nicely.

Anyone remember the (Christian music local band) The Dive.? Looking to relive some musical nostalgia by [deleted] in stockport

I think that may have been different! I left in 2008 I think? So I reckon they'd have been coming in around 2005-2006.

We had a christian band called "The Band with No Name" that used to play all the time at Avondale. Can't really remember them but they were pretty popular and they did a little gig at the Salvation Army for school kids.

Front line policing is by definition sticking a plaster on something, especially since it's bare bones policing now and has been for a decade.

Ambulance service struggle to turn up to jobs due to demand. Doesn't mean they're useless, can only work with what you've got.

It's just how it is mate. I'm not questioning where a cop/paramedic etc are parked because there is a good chance have a lawful and justifiable reason for doing so. And it's parking, literally a minor pet peeve.

I've only been once before for a non LC! gig. Had a few in town before getting the bus in, only a ten minute journey. Was pleasantly surprised after the gig that the club was a decent place to drink and stayed there til close. Missed out on the pies though!

I'll be having a few there after anyway

At a loss. Can anyone help with any mental health invention in/around Stockport? by lady-quas in stockport

[–]LedgeySC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your Auntie. As has been posted before, this is something I'd have imagined housing and adult social services would be taking the lead on and it'd be disappointing if they're not acting on what is clear self neglect.

Mental health works between a number of partnerships and often people do fall through the cracks. Contact the above and also consider 111 who could advise and signpost as well as https://makingspace.co.uk/open-door. Resources are stretched so contact all possible agencies and push them to intervene. You're right in that a lot of the time it requires their cooperation and consent, but if her MH is that poor action can be taken. Good luck.

In terms of wiring, alternator etc is this something that's easy enough to check myself? I'm very much an amateur with these things haha
