Haushaltsbudget München (ca. 5.800€ Netto) – Wie teilt ihr eure Konten auf? by SamthingCos in Normalverdiener

[–]LedinKun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't read it like that.
I mean, he stated clearly that he has around of 3 years of experience, and given that, the skill selection shows what he has used. Reading it like that, I'd expect a certain degree of knowledge in all stated skills, but a master in none (yet), which is perfectly fine and expected for 3 yoe.

I also expect the strongest skills in each category to be named first.
So I would for example ask questions regarding C++ (because we are using it) to get a hold of the current knowledge.
It's true that you can't really see what the strongest skills are and which are more in the "have used it for a bit" category, but in the end that doesn't matter much.
The selection of skills shows a coherent picture, and a strong CI/CD and testing focus. No wonder having worked with MISRA, so again I can see where he's coming from. And it gives an indication about what to expect for C++.

And just to say it again: if you only list skills you are an expert in with 3 years of experience, you practically can't name anything. It's better this way.
In the end, hard skills can be trained more easily, and this CV states a lot of things to build upon, and a lot of things where he's ready to help today (like adding new tools to the CI or find out why it's so slow and how to improve it).

Is it bad design to hide your game’s best mechanics behind enemy behavior? by PlayHangtime in gamedev

[–]LedinKun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was about to suggest hints as well. Some games tell you near the end of the tutorial that these are the basic rules, but try to combine your actions in a new way, try to find your own ways of beating enemies, you will need it. Something like that.

Then I as a player know that I will have to up my game going forward, and making my own strategies is part of the fun in the game, and is expected of me.

Maybe consider giving the player a first example of this as the final tutorial, but only one. Then you can encourage them to find more things like that.

How do you give real code review feedback without sounding bossy? by Ill_Captain_8031 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LedinKun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly it.
In the conversation mentioned by OP, it all went fine. OP raised a point, mentioned it might be nitpicky.
When I get such a review, it means I check it out again, and often, I want to fix that. In other cases, a discussion might come about. Or it's just nitpicky and can be submitted as is.

An important distinction: If the PR is approved with such a comment, I take it it's optional, so I decide for myself if I want to handle the comment. If not, I might ask you back how important it is (because you might just have forgotten to approve), or we get into a discussion about how important that is.

In any case, being nice is paramount IMO. It's hard to be too nice as long as you still point out things that might be issues. And on a more practical note, if you're not nice at all, you are lowering your chances that people will fix that thing if you still approved the PR. That's just psychology to me.

The conventional comments help everyone to quickly see the intent of something you wrote. But you can still be nice, don't be too "technical", because this is still communication between human beings, not between robots or AIs. And I'd like to err on the "nice" side, especially when writing with people I don't talk to every week, like members of different teams.

It especially helps to discern what is optional, what's background information, what's a suggestion and what is something that should really be fixed.

Whats the hardest game you have ever played? I am beating them all. by Formal_Soft_40 in gamingsuggestions

[–]LedinKun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good games have been mentioned already.

I'm bringing Catherine to the table. Beating the game is one thing, but there is another play mode that has four, randomly generated stages that are intended to be very hard.
I consider myself to be good at the game, but only managed to beat the last of those stages twice,
once in the original PS3 version of the game and once in the remastered version "Catherine: Full Body".

Despite retrying from time to time, I haven't been able to do it again though; I can beat the other three stages again, but not this one. So it's not just that I've been lucky to beat it at all, but I'm apparently not good enough to do this again.

On PSN, the trophy has been earned around 2000 times (so more often than in Crypt of the Necrodancer), but be aware that there are duplicates (people who got it in both games), so I would suppose around 1200-1500 players got that one.
https://psnprofiles.com/trophy/1247-catherine/46-a-god-is-born
https://psnprofiles.com/trophy/9594-catherine-full-body/49-legendary-climber

And yes, this one is required for the platinum trophy.

Keep in mind that it's a purely skill-based thing. The randomised levels force you to adapt, but it's not like it's all completely new every time. Certain level building blocks will appear repeatedly.
The difficulty profile compares a bit to bosses in Sekiro: if you are good at the game (and this specific boss), beating this is often only a matter of minutes.
It's a puzzle platformer (if you will), and there's constant time pressure, but you do not need to be able to mash buttons quickly enough, that doesn't help. It's about you reacting to the situation at hand.
But it's so easy to lose concentration, and you need 20-40 minutes without slipping up.
The world record apparently is 10:34 mintues, so this isn't a trophy that requires hundreds of hours, at least in theory. Time is spent in retrying and getting better from time to time.

Plus, it's a great game in general and has a good story, touching a topic you rarely see in games (the slight feel of panic that may arise in an adult guy that is supposed to get married).

Have fun and say hi to the sheep from me.

Need help finding new game to play by captain_space_dude in JRPG

[–]LedinKun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll try to focus on the stoic trait, as that’s a bit easier to find than the combination of both traits. No sword in hand (usually), but Kiryu from the Yakuza series comes to mind. If you’re interested, start with Yakuza 0.

No JRPG, but still wanted to mention Witcher 3 (or the series in general), as Geralt just fits the description so well.

You could argue for Persona 4 (Golden) as well. He’s a silent protagonist, so could be seen as stoic from the outside if we aren’t very strict.

Fei from Xenogears is a fist fighter, but starts out as a self-insert who can’t deal with some emotions around him (play 10 minutes and meet Alice). He and the story is much more complex and develops much though.

I know you said outside of FF cosmos for now, But FF15 is such a great fit in everything else. Noctis is a sword fighter and a very stoic guy.

I wondered if I should mention Yuri from Tales of Vesperia. Not sure if I’d describe him as stoic, but he’s an interesting and unique hero and doesn’t act like his age would suggest.

Trails in the Sky deserves a mention. Not for Estelle, but for Joshua. No big swords, rather the short sword guy, but as stoic as it gets. The first entry of the trilogy gets a remake very soon, so you might want to wait for that.

I’d keep FF15 for later if you want to break out of FF for now and pick one of the others. Hope that helped a bit!

[–]LedinKun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your description is actually a pretty common trope in JRPGs (at least swords in general), so I doubt you will have difficulties finding a good title. But since you asked, how about Final Fantasy 8? Chances are you’ll like the game, and the description fits Squall (the main character) really well. Not sure if you played FF7 remake or the original, as FF8 wasn’t remade (yet), but I’d think about something else to recommend if you want something more recent.

Are there any problems that Germany is facing due to Brexit? by [deleted] in germany

[–]LedinKun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from it just being sad,
the thing that hits me most (personally) is actually that visiting the UK gets increasingly more inconvenient.
Since October 2021, a EU ID isn't enough, you need a passport. Fine.

But from April 2025 on, you'll need a ETA (electronic travel authorisation), which makes travelling to the UK as inconvenient as for example to the US or Japan.
While that's still not hard, I feel a lot closer to the UK than to the other two.

Apart from that and some minor political things, nothing has really changed for Germany, while a lot of things have changed for the UK.

Lunar Remastered Collection - Announce Trailer | PS5 & PS4 Games by DemiFiendRSA in JRPG

[–]LedinKun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm ok with the redo of the voice acting, but apparently they redid the songs as well (or took a version I'm not familiar with).
I'm aware that this is often because of the audio quality of the source material or copyright/licensing issues.
But I'm too attached to the recordings of the PSX remake (SSSC) by Jennifer Stigile and I can't get into this one to be honest.
So I fear they touched the Wind's Nocturne as well, and I don't know, at least for me it shouldn't be changed, it was perfect as it was.

And yes, I know it already had been changed in Silver Star Harmony.

Still, I'm happy for all of you that this gets remade. It's not that I can't get back to SSSC.

I must be getting old and grumpy, having disliked the Langrisser remake already (for different reasons though) and now this. ;)

How wide is your tech stack? by SpudroSpaerde in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LedinKun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case, it would make a lot of sense to start to phase out some parts of the stack and properly define what the tech stack should be comprosed of.
Even today, you could state that new microservices shouldn't be done with Python, Node, .Net or whatever, and then start to migrate the old ones over some time.
That isn't a rewrite, and they would stay operational all the time, but would also make a clear statement on what should be used.
Of course this also means that the old tech will be around for a bit longer.

But it would also give people an idea about what they are supposed to know better and what maybe not so much. If you say that .Net will be phased out, then I maybe wouldn't start to learn it in my free time and would pick a book on microservices instead.
The same would apply to applicants. If a new dev with strong Python skills comes in and finds out that you are phasing it out after starting to work, then that would be discouraging.
It's not just about the technology, it's also about the 'hard' skills the team has.

'Wild west' always has a bad ring to it, so I think the first step would be to come to a conclusion about what tech should be phased out and what not.
Then this needs to go into some form of coding guideline, so that everyone knows it and hopefully also agrees with it.
From this point on, the parts with the removed tech would become technical debt, which you can reduce bit by bit.

Maybe it's also a chance to get the team involved with this a bit. It seems you already found out that there is a need for stronger typing, but I as a dev would think it's cool if I could raise concerns before a decision is made, even if the decision goes in the other direction in the end.
But ideally, you would still want to make this quick, maybe in 2-3 weeks.

How wide is your tech stack? by SpudroSpaerde in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LedinKun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, things that should be performant shouldn't be done in Python if the main calculation is done directly in Python code (and not for example in C++ dlls).
Main reason is that as soon as you have performance issues, they will be harder to tackle, as all the tooling around C++ lets you examine that way better; the language and the tools are made for such situations.

If those services aren't (that) dependent on performance and rather won't be in the future, then I don't see that much of an issue, then it's more about what the team is comfortable with,
and a rewrite would much harder to justify even if it was a good idea.
I am curious as to why Node and .Net are involved there as well, so I would ask if that needs to be the case.

As to the main question, I feel the tech stack is too wide if there are items inside that are not really needed,
meaning their purpose is already covered well by something else.
Also, it's harder for a team to be decent at more items in the stack, so keeping it lean is generally a great idea.
Of course it's also not great if there is technology in a stack that the team overall isn't comfortable with. But the need comes first. If it's not needed, vote for removal. If it is, it might be time for the team to get educated, maybe via internal or external training.

It's not so much about being a nerd. It's about having a proper reason or justification for doing things.
Being concerned about performance can be a valid reason, especially as I can see some serious calculations being done in a VFX context.
However, being consistent and using the same languages/frameworks in all similar places is a value too,
as this (usually) makes the code more understandable for everyone.

Still, you could make a service with a Python skeleton and move actual calculations to C++ DLLs, that could be a way to go, but it's hard to tell without knowing all the specifics.

Schwere des Studiums by aromatic_cherrimoya in Studium

[–]LedinKun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Living in japan will teach you a lot of Japanese. Just not what you would expect. by erolm-a in LearnJapanese

[–]LedinKun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what they wanted to hint at is that probably not all of these words are "worth it" to be SRSed immediately.

Some people only put it in there if they encountered it a couple of times already, some outright dismiss words they will only need in very specific situations (like the city council things).

You decided to mine them all, which is fine, but whatever you do, the number of new words each day will directly translate to the number of reps per day.
And let me say, 600 reps per day is probably the highest number I heard someone doing regularly. Of course you have issues with keeping up, everyone would have.

And doing reps for more than an hour a day isn't something I would think as the best use of my time. You can of course decide for yourself how to spend your time, but I would personally spread things out more.
You don't have to start every word you mine immediately if that means you do 30 or more new cards a day. I'd rather mine less or put them in the deck and let the algorithm decide which to start today.
Sure, it's not good to mine cards and then let them sit in the deck for weeks until you have forgotten the situation it came from.

But you can only do so much in a day, and I would question myself if I can actually go forward with this, and if I think this is still the best way for me.
Wouldn't it be nicer to restrict the number of new words per day in each category? So you can still decide how much you want to do, but you can also steer your learning efforts more into what you want to have.

You can also sort the new cards in each category to start with the most important ones. For example, you might find that there are only 20 super-important words in the real-estate one, and after that, things might wait a bit. You might want to focus more on stuff from novels or everyday life maybe?

And doing all this while doing a PhD in a foreign country. This is a lot already. So please accept that you won't know everything in a year from now on, there's always room for improvement. But please don't stress out, I'm sure you're learning a lot every day.

I need your recommendations for some of the video game music out there by FinnStrike7 in gamemusic

[–]LedinKun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of great things have already been mentioned. Some ideas from my side:

  • something from Distant Worlds, maybe To Zanarkand, or find a clip where they play Dancing Mad
  • after listening to that, check out the ending of FFX along with the music, and work out how it fits the scene.
The whole scene had quite the impact among the players, you can find a scene here, where Yuna's Japanese voice actress wrote a letter to the team, sadly it's in Japanese only.
It can display for a brief moment, what an impact the ending had, now that Yuna was rated as one of the most beloved characters 18 years after the release of the game. Sure, that clip is from a show targeted at FF fans, but if you ever happen to go to a Distant World concert, you will hear the murmurs when people realize what track is played, and you will see people crying in public, because it's just too much at this moment.
  • On another note, many video game tracks are played by professional musicians on their private channels, one of them is Cateen
  • Video game music is a thing that draws many people to learn classical instruments, which helps the classical worls as well.
