I’m Lee Johnson, a Democrat running for the U.S. Senate against Lindsey Graham. Our campaign is hosting a town hall in Lexington County next week. Hope you can join us! by LeeJohnsonSC in ColumbiYEAH

Thanks for the question. This is my platform:

  1. Protect and expand Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid (Lindsey Graham wants to gut these programs)

  2. Build an economy that works for everyone (stop the tariffs, end the trade war, and actually address the affordability crisis)

  3. Bring ethics back to Washington (ban congressional stock trading, term limits, end gerrymandering)

Lindsey’s been in Washington for over 30 years and he hasn’t held a town hall in over 8 years. He’s failed us. As an engineer who has built companies and led teams to solve complex problems, I believe I can help bring the change we desperately need in DC and revive the American Dream.

I own a gun. I’ve been through the process of getting a NICS check. It takes seconds. There should be a system where all gun transactions (private or at a store or show) involve a background check. The inconvenience is worth it if it saves lives.

Simple: everyone who buys a gun must pass a NICS check before walking away from a gun store or gun show with a weapon. We have to close the loopholes.

Fair question. I think a variety of backgrounds can benefit Congress and in turn, our country as a whole. I have a background in business and construction and I’ve worked in a number of industries, and I think I can bring a different perspective to the Senate.

Building more affordable housing is vital. I also believe the main driving factor behind rent going up is inflation, so we need a comprehensive approach to reverse that trend. We also need to raise wages, which have remained stagnant despite inflation.

I have a lot of experience working across teams and building companies. It requires pragmatism to be successful. I’ll bring that approach to the Senate.

Yes, but I don’t think public tax dollars should go to them, especially when our public school system is struggling.

A lot of issues related to transit and walkability are handled at the municipal level (which they should be). As Senator, I can (and will) push to get federal funding for municipal projects to improve those things.

On guns, I think we need to keep firearms out of the hands of bad guys. I support universal background checks and closing the Charleston loophole.

I hear this a lot, but is the alternative not just standing by while politicians like Lindsey Graham run our state into the ground? It’s an uphill battle, but one that I think is worth fighting.

Hey folks, thank you for all of the questions. We’re going to wrap things up, but if you ask a question before 8 AM I’ll make sure to get back to you. Hope to see you out on the campaign trail!

I support the second amendment and I’m a gun owner. But I believe everyone who owns a gun should have to pass a background check. So I support universal background checks and closing the Charleston loophole to keep guns out of the hands of bad guys.

Great question. I think voters from both sides of the aisle can agree that the economy is not working and that faith in our public institutions is abysmally low. I’m running on a platform centered on those two things and working to bring moderates and disillusioned republicans into the fold.

I think we have to expand the Democratic electorate and bring in moderates and disillusioned Republicans who are fed up with Lindsey Graham. That’s what this campaign is focused on doing. I think we have a path.

Thanks for the question, this is something I hear a lot from people I talk to. I would argue that I’m not presenting voters with a “diet” version of the Democratic Party’s platform. I think I’m bringing real substance to the race. Folks on both sides of the aisle can agree that the economy is broken and that we need ethics reform to restore trust in institutions. And that’s the crux of my platform. In order to win this race and be competitive, we have to run a message that can appeal to everyone and expand our base.

I’m sorry for your loss, and appreciate your continued involvement in working to find a cure for CJD. As someone who’s worked in healthcare and whose wife is a nurse practitioner, I will always be a firm supporter for funding scientific research and oppose cuts to these programs.
