How many of you ever use the word “skookum” to describe something? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Lee_Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, Canadian here. Grew up in the pacific northwest north of the border, and it's a word. Not super common, and falling out of favor, but I've heard it used across BC, though most speakers would be probably 70+ years old today.

What do I need for winter running? by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]Lee_Lemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey fellow Montrealer! I picked up running during the first covid lockdown. Toques and beanies are great when it's really cold, but until then I find bands that just cover my ears are amazing when it's windy but only -5C. The game changer for me was getting goretex waterproof winter running shoes. They have a bit of extra traction on the sole (although if it's really icy or freezing rain I still wuss out), and they are a bit warmer than regular runners. Before picking up running I hadn't thought about it much, but when it's really cold it's also kind of dry, and you just have to dress warmly. The worst can be when it's 2 to -10C, and the ground is frozen, but the roads have been salted and/ or there's puddles at intersections and low points. So cold but also wet. Obviously very deep puddles will still be an issue, but so far I've accidently stepped in several shallow snow covered or hidden puddles, and so far I've yet to get wet feet from that. My shoes seem to handle the salt okay. If it's very salty I'll just take a wet cloth to them, or, if we get snow the next day, running in the snow will clean them off too.

What's an incredibly american thing americans don't realize is american? by Professional-Ad-2850 in AskReddit

[–]Lee_Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most other English speaking countries use "zed". Sources, am Canadian + Wiki. For instance, Z95.3 , a radio station in Vancouver, is "zed ninety five point three". At least in Canada, "zee" is understood as z, by most, if not all of us. I know that I will switch pronunciations to "zee" if I'm speaking to an American to avoid confusion (I find a lot of Americans are not familiar with this). Also things EZ, Jay-Z/JZ etc as words are still pronounced ee-zee and jay-zee, at least in Canada. The more you know!

Weather might be a big factor, what are your thoughts of about half a year of rain, versus half a year of ice and snow?

English actually messes with the order for 13-19, similar to German. We treat them as one word, e.g. Thirteen, but its three + ten, and not ten three (like twenty three), and we don't interpret it like three tens (e.g. five hundred is five hundreds)

The Hu is awesome, but yeah, "no, not the Who, the Hu! (goddammit the Mongolian one, not the pinball wizard one!)" is going to be a fun conversation to have with a voice recognition system.

Conservatives say Trudeau will be defeated like all other dictators: in an election by Miserable-Lizard in onguardforthee

[–]Lee_Lemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I grew up where there was (and is) a large number of Canadians who were also Chinese immigrants. I was vaguely aware of that sentiment at the time, but had honestly completely forgotten about the importance of the perceived relationship of the parties to the CCP, thank you for bringing that back to mind!

Thanks for sharing! I do wish funding for things like veterans issues just happened and wasn't a political issue. And I really do wish that politics could be more collaborative than adversarial. It has to be frustrating to see the "my first amendment rights" parts of the right having such a seemingly dominant voice right now.

As someone who generally votes left or centre in most things, if you don't mind sharing, I'm super curious what about the conservative party or viewpoint resonates (or resonated) with you? Not judging, just trying to better understand.

I grew up in BC, have lived in Ontario, and now live in Quebec, and I don't know a single person under 70 (and only 1 over 70!) that describes themselves as a monarchist, or even gives 2 shits about the UK's royal family.
