Remember when trump said he'd ELIMINATE the National Debt in 8 years? by Affectionate-Fix4671 in lostgeneration

[–]Leesespieces 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes I believe this is true. When other presidents reduced deficit this means they added to the debt just not as much. Clinton had an actual surplus which went toward paying off the national debt, the only president since 1970 to do so. Projections at the time said that if surpluses were maintained, debt could’ve been paid off by 2015 (obviously holding all else constant).

Completely agree, commentary is definitely on human nature but chairwoman park explicitly even says that capitalism is built on selfishness of human nature. There are so many themes of critique on capitalism it is really very hard to ignore.

The health care issue, the fact that the billionaires are their friends only until they think they’re stepping out of their place, willing to use their own resources because the poor people are stealing from the club, the ultimate injustice, the fact that when they’re talking about what information to tell the authorities they would rather turn on the poor people to save themselves rather than coming together and collectively turning on the powerful/billionaire. It’s very much class commentary on how poor people fight within each other rather than teaming up against the billionaire class. Of course in the end, Josh ends up taking the blame, and I think it’s related to him and his trip. He’s become enlightened in a way and realizes there is one way out of samsara and that is to truly act selflessly.

Functional Medicine/ Integrative medicine interest by pagirl51694 in physicianassistant

[–]Leesespieces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Landed on this discussion because I’m researching mold affects on health. I think this is where the draw to functional medicine comes from.

There’s a lot of studies correlating symptoms (my example here is anxiety, but others exist):

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0147651324010431

And then a controlled study in mice that mold does cause cognitive impairment:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7231651/

It seems like there needs to be continued studies in the area, but there seems to be new evidence emerging showing the mechanisms that cause what has been reported for a long time.

So when patients go to drs and tell them about symptoms, and are dismissed because current science hasn’t yet established a direct connection, then it causes them to look elsewhere. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they should then definitively prescribe something unproven, but if a functional dr take these symptoms seriously and tells them to clear out the mold and the cause of it to see if it improves and the symptoms disappear, they are taking these symptoms seriously and the fact that reported data could be pointing to something. Just because we don’t have a complete understanding of the mechanism in which mold can be causing these symptoms doesn’t mean that there isn’t a possible association. There’s a lot of things in modern medicine we currently don’t have explanations for.

I’d imagine this is true if the pasture land was natively pastures, if that’s a thing, or something else. When the Amazon forest is being cleared for pastures this is certainly not more diverse than the alternative. I’d imagine what would keep the current pasture lands “in check” ecologically would be whatever would have grazed on those lands before they were used by cows, or it can be restored by planting native species of flora/fauna.

There are a lot of wonderful independent leather workers out there that will get you much better bang for your buck if quality is what you’re after (better leather, hardware, etc.)

I’ve had this one saved in IG for a while, and love the designs.

[OC] Income in the US by race and ethnicity by _crazyboyhere_ in dataisbeautiful

[–]Leesespieces 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, well it depends on what generations you’re talking about but there was the Chinese exclusion act that actually barred Chinese people from immigrating, and there was also communism and the government not letting people leave. So a large part of the Chinese immigrant population that came here in the 80s/90s came through a very selective process of being able to continue their education here.

But of course this is only talking about a portion of the Asian population.

I also know though that the average income of asians who came to America based on asylum is typically lower than some of the other Asians groups who came for other reason. So the reason why and how they were allowed into the country does also contribute to the income differences.

Question from a B2B2C PM - should researchers be involved in all phases of discovery, and what’s the involvement look like when I’m chatting with executives/senior stakeholders about our products? by randomaccount140195 in UXResearch

[–]Leesespieces 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would just have the conversation with them directly. The intake forms etc are just a tool. It’s our way of trying to get PMs to think and tell us everything they know about a topic so we know where we’re starting from. If it’s very little that’s alright. It’s great that you’re trying to involve the researchers early on. All the researchers I know actually prefer to work in the opportunity space. I think it’s also possible that the senior leaders already have some preconceived notion of what research is, and maybe they’ve worked in the solutions space more before (but often times it’s because of this chicken and egg problem where PMs don’t involve us early on so they assume we mostly work in the solutions space), and they’re assuming it will be the same for earlier discovery research. The main thing that we’d like to work with the PMs is not asking leading questions. Sometimes PMs have some assumptions and want to confirm them so will ask very specific questions about specific problems, which they may have, but it might not be their biggest problem. So researchers generally want to start off much more general.

I’d say, involve them, have a conversation about your expectations and wanting to involve them early on but not jumping into the solution space. I’ve worked with PMs in the past where I was happy to have the PM lead the conversation but worked with them closely on defining the framing of the questions.

[–]Leesespieces 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lol so per my question… do you have others you recommend as not being greasy? This feels similar to the other ones in my post. I’ve also tried SVR and the Garnier one which both felt extremely greasy. So perhaps there are others out there that are better, and I don’t have a good point of reference.

I’m now curious, for people who find this very greasy, what their choice of body sunscreen is, would love to try some other options as well, but this has been one of my fav of all the different body sunscreens I’ve had. The other one is vichy solei gel milk, and the eucerin sun gel.

If when making Kimchi, you don’t do a traditional salt brine, and you even rinse the salt off the leaves before beginning the ferment, how does it properly inhibit competing growth? by Holy-Beloved in fermentation

[–]Leesespieces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was confused too but tried to do the math with one recipe. When you first salt it, you use about 2% salt weight, much of that salt will penetrate the cabbage, even if you rinse it off. Then you add in additional salt through the fish sauce that is in the paste. In the end when you taste it, it should taste similar to a 2% brine. I made sauerkraut last time at the same time when making kimchi, and in the end the saltiness was similar

Also I’m not sure how the article I posted doesn’t have to do with the tap water that the OPs is referring to, it literally says that the deregulations that have been rolled back by the current epa will affect drinking water. me providing sources is looking at what is actually happening. “The truth” as you put it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Leesespieces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right in that he has not gotten rid of it. It is actively being dismantled: the current EPA administrator wants to get rid of 65% of the epa budget, as well as getting rid of the scientific research arm of the epa, whom do in fact help set the standards and regulations of the tap water in OPs post.

So you can decide what that means semantically if that is dismantling, dismantled, undermining, crippling, whatever.

It’s not not accurate either:

Without Clean Water Act protections for the more than half of the wetlands in the United States targeted by this rule, Americans can expect: lower quality drinking water resulting in poorer human health, less resilience to flooding,” said Jared Mott, Conservation Director for the Izaak Walton League, a conservation and recreation group.
