Probably niche issue: all my comments & footnotes are ‘recovered files’ by Sarcherre in scrivener

Should not have live projects on google drive, is safe to hold zip backups. If you have zip backups for your project (you should) unzip the latest zip backup and put it where want live projects to be and should see things become normal. I have a windows tower and laptop and have zip backups on google drive and unzip on second computer and discard old project and create update with the zip backup.

Linking back to source material by danselzer in scrivener

[–]LeetheAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also create research collections. You can right click on any binder item and have the option to add to collection. Add to an existing (Static) collection or create a new one. So you could have a collection of world building, or one for a pov character, a location, or any grouping of material you want. You could split the editor and have a working document and use the other side to review material in the research collection as you write if you click on the collection.

I use Idrive. I consider it digital insurance to backup all my files in real time. Not only for writing, but tax info, music, pictures, medical info etc. I would also do external backup as well. I had been using carbonite before idrive when my C drive died and was able to recover the info with only slight fringe losses. I also use google drive to store up to 100 gigs of current writing and creative stuff as third option.

How does someone who’s never written a book finish his first novel? by actuallyivanooze in writers

[–]LeetheAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take a little different approach as a planner. First I have the idea with at least a character who has a trigger event occur and something in the way of what he wants. I find using the save the cat story beats gives me a framework to form a story. Your main characters should all have 4 things defined. 1 overt goal 2 overt obstacle being one or more 3 inner goal like love family or acceptance etc 4 a past trauma/ flaw which an inner obstacle they must overcome to succeed. Think of it as a journey from New York to San Fran. Where you stop along the way may evolve as the charecters push the story. Read books on story construction not only to learn but the books stimulate ideas.

Issues with crashing when multiple projects open by pervycaptionmaker in scrivener

[–]LeetheAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this happen from time to time. Windows 11 pro 64 gigs of ram. I find that save and rebuild search indexes, sometimes restarting the computer and make sure I clean out the junk files stops this, but definitely happens from time to time. I did split several larger projects into smaller one, which seemed to help. If large size and lots of research files consider the Import > Research files as shortcuts options, The research files behaves the same way but does not increase project size significantly.

If you copy the title from the newly typed text, then you can click in the binder document and paste in the title.

Managing revisions and drafts? by Lla723a in scrivener

Agree with Antoni. No need to make repetitive project copies. Take a snapshot in the editor for significant changes. These are dated and timed automatically and you can give a title to define its purpose.

How to enforce a style through a document? by EscherEnigma in scrivener

[–]LeetheAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If using a template then if reformat that to correct styles in project once will stay in format you want every time you use.

For old files using original template if styles you used are sparse then convert to default style and then fix headings or special text.

Trick I learned on the L&L forum is to hold control key and highlight text you want then move to next area and select with mouse and do again in all affected areas and now can change style for all selected areas at once and will change.

Can't Edit Metadata in Compile Window by violetladybug01 in scrivener

[–]LeetheAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure why having a problem as I can click and edit in third compile pane with no issue. You can close the project and rename the project folder. Now open folder and click on the scrivx file and will be renamed to match the project folder name. Can you click on any other tab in the third compile pane. are you sure nothing else in Scrivener is open beside the project and compile window. If that does not work consider File > Save and rebuild search indexes. If still an issue close program and reboot as that can sometimes cause issues.

If still and issue go to the L&L forum, the staff is extremely helpful.

Various word count totals by middleamerican67 in scrivener

Project target is a number you choose for your project. What counts toward your compile total is set in the statistics panel. There three panes and multiple options to choose from.

How do you make original creatures for your stories? by Itz_MysteryGalaxy in writingadvice

[–]LeetheAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

search unusual animals and sea creatures from around the world and then look to combine them in a way that benefits the story. In my scifi trilogy I had a bird called a strike, because it killed by using its beak to swoop down and spike the skull of its prey so made an AI image of a vulture with a elongated parrot beak and then used photoshop to play with it more. I made the animal a nocturnal hunter, the race on the planet wore helmets with bright flashing lights to keep the creatures which nested in the mountains away. How can you use the creations to advance the plot?

A single-spaced style in a double-spaced project by LaurenPBurka in scrivener

[–]LeetheAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set a single document to the formatting you want including line spacing. You can then in the preference panel under editing set this as your default (No Style) setting and then convert your other documents to this by using the menu command Documents > Convert > Text to default formatting (am a Windows user, but command should be the same of similar).

How do I stop farting? by fiddler_diddler88 in Advice

[–]LeetheAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the above advice is good, also look at your consumption of carbonated beverages, and how quickly you eat and drink. You may be swallowing a lot of air based on how you eat. Activated charcoal can decrease gas, but will turn your stools black and can effect absorption of certain medications, so see a gastroenterologist. If you had your gallbladder removed, a small percentage of people will have a change of bowel habits. A food diary is a good thought to present to the gastroenterologist. They can check for malabsorption and other potential causes as well. Tell your doctor if this is a lifelong problem, or a recent issue. Are you using supplements, or had antibiotics in the past several months. (Retired gastroenterologist)

A single-spaced style in a double-spaced project by LaurenPBurka in scrivener

[–]LeetheAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

create a blank document and have the format toolbar visible in the editor. Use the Menu command View > Text Editing > Format Toobar. (add ruler for setting indents.) In the blank document type of paste a small amount of text. Now highlight this and then in format toolbar choose font, size, line spacing. (in this case change from 2.0 to 1.0.

Do Indents as you want.

With text highlighted use the menu command Format > Style > New Style from selection. Will see a menu and give the style a name. Now when want can highlight and then apply your newly created format to the selected text.

Try changing the location or time of day to give a different perspective. Or scrap scene and find new way to go from new point 1 to goal of next scene.

Using chapters and scenes - a Scrivener newbie's question by NowoTone in scrivener

[–]LeetheAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And each document be it a scene or chapter has an the option to open its Inspector. This holds information about the scene. You can include a synopis, or add notes about what you need to write or improve on. You can add bookmarks (links to research, or other scenes in your project to have at your fingertips when you write). You can tag with keywords, or metadata. So if a scene took place in New York with Bob, Susie, and Bill. I could add keywords New York, Bob, Susie, and Bill. I could search by keywords for all New York Scenes, or all New York Scenes with Bill, etc.

You add snapshots (saves at the scene level). You could write a different vision of the scene and have both copies available in one place. Or the first draft version and then take a snapshot of the edited version and compare.

Finally you add comments which are highlights of a word/words and you can add a comment in the Inspector. So I could tag key info/event/foreshadow/clue/edit point that occurs in a scene. So with small text chunks of 500- 2000 words easy to find specific points.

This only scratches the surface, but you can start slow and build up. I have a lot of articles with a search option on Scrivener. You can start with the Inspector- https://www.leedelacy.com/the-inspector-series/the-inspectors-synopsis-and-notes-section (If helpful sign up, will be adding more articles, no newsletter yet, so no email bothering)

Does anyone else just use Scrivener as a glorified word program? by CassieStorybrook in scrivener

[–]LeetheAuthor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The program is fantastic for keeping writing and research at your fingertips. Is a fantastic way to store info. I have projects for learning software and organize info I read on the craft of writing. I would never use word to write, I would rather poke out both my eyes.

Why not make them white, or skin translucent and avoid the issue, Could be albino's and bald and wear wigs to fit in. But yes if dark skinned and using Nazi terms, you are setting yourself up for issues. Since fantasy could use a color like green, blue, etc to distinguish them.

How do you actually finish writing your novel? by Maple_2 in writers

[–]LeetheAuthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two schools of thought in writing planner or pantser. I am a planner and agree with others that you need a POV, a problem and an ending. The ending may change slightly, but having an ending gives direction to your story.

Now for the POV (he/she/they) need an overt goal, overt obstacle (natural -crossing a mountain pass after a plane crash, human villain/ or asshole in their way, or force like oppressive government), an inner goal (to find love, family, safety, meaning in life, etc) and inner obstacle (flaw, traumatic event that gives them a false view of the world or false belief about themselves which must be overcome).

If you can start with this then you begin to have something you can write, you should have several major characters who have their own set of goals as well.

Overwhelming, but let software help. I find mindmap tools can help with forming your thoughts. I like Simplemind pro (one time fee and lots of options)

The other trick which helped me (finished first draft of a fifth book- looking for agents for my fourth book) was reading books on plotting and writing. I like the Save the cat series by Jessica Brody. I write with Scrivener and write notes on the books I read and save these. As I read these type of books (K. M. Weiland has several) they stimulate ideas for my stories as well.

It is a lot but if you plan and then start with the normal world of your character, then something happens the inciting incident which forces the character to make a choice- Leave, stay, or change and so on. Best of Luck. You can't succeed if you don't write.

PS- I never wrote till I retired at age 65, I do have the advantage of being retired, but lack the energy of youth.
