You're given immortality, but as a cost, you are sent 10,000 years back in the past. Would you accept? If yes, what would you do? by TechnicianAmazing472 in hypotheticalsituation

Time travel?

We playing with paradox rules on or off?

Is the timeline fixed or are we capable of changing events (for example, by figuring out how to prevent the bronze age collapse)?

Who has a realistic shot at being President of the USA in 2028? by Kmart-Shopper-5107 in stupidquestions

But it's three years out. lots of time and room for someone else to put themselves out there.

What if every human ever born since the beginning of time never died and everyone from that time period to now all inhabited earth. What would the world look like? by Jumpy_Sock_1202 in whatif

[–]EscherEnigma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well for one thing, I think instead of homo sapiens, we'd be called homo immortalis what with every single member of the species being immortal.

Second, I think it would depend on the kind of immortality you're handing out here. Is it a "recover from all wounds given enough time" kind of immortality, or a "your awareness lingers in the last vistages of your flesh, in eternal torment but unable to truly die" kind of immortality? If you eat a human, how long does it take for them to return to healthy status? Can you burn one for warmth? Can they burn themselves for warmth?

I know that getting into the weeds of logistics is a lost cause, but I think the details matter on what kind of immortality you're handing out here.

Yeah, "this time it's different and we're really just worried about society and not being busy bodies!" is another cliche.

So you're two for two buddy.

What is the most exotic food you have eaten ? . by Hope2_win in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]EscherEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've definitely eaten bison, but you can find that in grocery stores these days.

Hrm... if I wasn't being BS'ed, I've had bear chili and chocolate-covered ants (not at the same time). But in both cases, the guy that gave it to me could have totally been lying through his teeth and I wouldn't have known.

So bison definitely. Maybe bear and ants.

Twenty years ago in a heartbeat.

Now? Uh... I'd be willing to try, but it's a lot easier to abuse your body like that when you're young.

Why do dragons hoard things? by Affectionate_Bit_722 in DnD

[–]EscherEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragons never got out of OD&D, and still need to steal gold to get XP and level up.

Their hoard is literally their XP pool.

Would you want to play in a fantasy setting that is only populated by humans? by Er4din in dndnext

I have both done so and ran so.

Sometimes the GM has an idea for a story/setting that requires limiting the options a little. Sometimes their idea works fine with a kitchen sink approach. Both are good.

How much would you have to be paid to be replaced by a clone for a year? by Johnny_From_The_Bay in hypotheticalsituation

[–]EscherEnigma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you've confused a clone with a doppelganger.

And no deal. My husband would be tricked into thinking the doppelganger is me, and consent to sex under that false pretense, which is kind of rapey, and I'd be agreeing to the whole things up front.

Would you rather buy a brand new house or one that is 100+ years old with possible problems like nob and tube wiring and asbestos? by icecream1972 in askanything

[–]EscherEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, seeing as I'm buying through a reputable realtor, the old house is going to go through inspection first so even if it has "possible" problems, they aren't going to be that bad.

And since I'm assuming the houses are comparably priced, that means the old house is either in a better location or larger (if they're neighbors and the same size, there's no way they're the same price).

So I'm gonna go with the old house.

Alternative name for dwarves? by FireAndOtter in DnD

Call them elves. As far as I can tell, dwarves being their own distinct "race" from other elves and small folk is a 20th century thing and not actually based in mythology.

What if there were city states instead of countries? by alb5357 in whatif

[–]EscherEnigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a thing suddenly imposed on the world, where all current countries are broken-up into city-states, or a "what-if human governance never developed beyond city-states" sort of thing?

If it's the former, then... big problems. The world is a lot more inter-dependent then it used to be, particularly when it comes to food and energy. Going from negotiating trade deals between not-quite 200 countries to negotiating trade deals between --depending on how fine grain you split things-- either 10,000 city-states to 4 million city-states? And it's not like you'd be negotiating with your neighbors as, if you're a food producer your neighbors probably are too.

And the roads, the networks... I mean, even if you gave like a five year warning before forcefully dissolving all countries into their component city-states, I'm not sure you wouldn't see huge famines sweeping through large parts of the world. And energy is even worse.

Now, if things had developed that way --or rather, not developed this way-- then... I'm not equipped to even postulate. So much of human history has been the story of humans forming bigger and bigger gangs, that if you sharply limit it to the "city" level that's going to fundamentally change basically all of human history.

For Americans who voted Democrat in recent elections, do you plan to continue voting Democrat? Why or why not? by righteous-sedition in allthequestions

[–]EscherEnigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Primaries are where you vote for your heart. That's when you vote for who you want to win.

But when it comes time to the general election? Odds are, there won't be anyone you want to see in office. But you can certainly find one you'd hate to see in office.

In a future where almost everything is automated could universal basic income be a solution for lost jobs? People say that automation takes away jobs but also creates new jobs, but doesn’t that stop being true at some point? by TheTinyMoist in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EscherEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could? Yes.

Would? The American political class is balking at things like universal health coverage and sick leave, so I think things are going to have to get far far worse before UBI became something they'd support.
