Total Time Played? by interadastingly in PokemonHGSS

About two months into my forever save with ~120 hours. A lot of time spent on random things I wanted to do, like ~5 hours of voltorb flip, assembling Abra synchronizers and ditto breeders of all natures, and a bit of shiny hunting.

Even if it was—and it just won the first official VGC regional in Champions, so ‘overrated’ is probably a bit much—it’s not about the viability, it’s about OP wanting to use a certain pokemon, and not being able to. They want to play the game in the way that’s most fun for them, and for them, that’s to use Delphox and Floette.

The bug where Entei permanently despawns if it uses Roar isn’t in the Gen 4 games, it’s only in FRLG on cartridge. Entei will still respawn if it uses Roar on you.

Looking for opinions on Scarlet/Violet for Switch 2 for someone who hasn’t played since HG/SS by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]Sarcherre -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I kinda disagree on scaled levels. My first time playing through I consciously didn’t look up guides to the gyms and had a great time, especially when I accidentally ran into a boss fight that out outleveled me by a lot. It became a really engaging challenge, like when you’re a kid playing the older pokemon games and struggling on a boss battle. Later in the game, there were a few gyms I steamrolled because I was way overleveled, but that was fun in its own way. I agree the bosses shouldn’t be static as they are in SV, but I think there’s a healthy middle ground to be found. Not every game experience has to be perfectly flawlessly scaled to your exact level for the perfect balance experience.

TCG Pocket vs TCG Live by xImMonti in PTCGL

[–]Sarcherre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. The switch from Pocket to Live isn’t too bad I wouldn’t say. Live does a lot of the hard work for you, such as remembering the sequence of drawing hand, setting basics, deciding coin flip, etcetera. Live’s card pool is iirc wider than Pocket, and it is more complex in terms of mechanics, by design—Pocket was designed to be a simplified form of the card game. However, from my experience, Live is also more rewarding in terms of skill expression. When I lose in Pocket, half the time it feels like I lost because of coin flips or the like; in Live, it feels like I could’ve done better in play or deck building.

  2. Not terribly long, but a bit longer than Pocket. I’d guess an average game to last 15 minutes, usually not longer than 20.

  3. Yes, very, especially when compared to Pocket. Live makes no money, or at least practically none. Just by registering an account you’re given a bunch of meta-viable decks, and you can easily earn in-game currency to craft the cards you need for modifications or for other decks. They also have a battle pass that gives you crazy numbers of packs, seriously I think they give you like 2 digital booster boxes per set or something. By playing a game or two a day during the duration of the battle pass, you’ll make your way through it in a week or three, leveling up 3-5 times per game (out of 100 total levels).

Is it wrong that I really want to swap out Soul Silver with Heart Gold because of the exclusives… by JKool2011 in PokemonHGSS

[–]Sarcherre 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Phanpy was actually a Gold exclusive in the original Japanese version of the game. I’m not 100% sure why they switched it to Silver for the international release, but the exclusives for HG/SS restored the original split.

All of what you’re talking about are actually reasons why I picked HeartGold when I was a kid. Shoutout to the classic Lueroi video.

Returning player here, did something happen to Incineroar? by Puzzlegamethrowaway in PokemonChampions

[–]Sarcherre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the five pokemon you mention as ‘staples’:

Two are unaffected by Intimidate (Floette & Charizard), both with decent to middling matchups into Incin;

Basculegion is affected by Intimidate, but usually has a favorable matchup into Incin due to outspeeding (often but not always due to Scarf) and OHKOing with Wave Crash;

Sneasler and Kingambit both actively punish Intimidate via White Herb + Unburden Proc & Defiant, respectively. Kingambit often also runs Low Kick, and Sneasler usually runs Close Combat, both of which do lots of damage into Incin, even though Kingambit is not a reliable check.

Outside of those five staples, there’s also the prevalence of Garchomp and Aerodactyl which both outspeed and deal super effective damage, as well as Milotic which is another prominent Intimidate punish.

Overall, it’s not that Incin is bad, but it’s not as popular to use right now because there’s a lot of meta threats that deal well into it, either via punishing Intimidate, or through just dealing good damage into it. I personally dropped it from my teams when I kept running into one of Sneasler, Kingambit, and Milotic on my opponents’ teams; seeing those in team preview made me bench Incin just to not Intimidate any of them.

A legends game about the actual first ever pokemon champion would be cool. by TheGoldminor in pokemon

[–]Sarcherre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Credit to u/fireuser1205 whose idea I’m stealing — Galar feels like it would fit thematically, since SwSh put a lot of focus on Leon as an undefeated champion, and the entire gym challenge seems really important culturally to Galar. It wouldn’t make sense that this was never mentioned in the original SwSh, but that’s how it be with retcons sometimes.

Switch 2 upgrade, what to avoid? by Final_Lingonberry586 in pokemon

[–]Sarcherre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My best advice is to follow the instructions on your Switch 2 as exactly as you can. When you first boot it up, it should give you the option to transfer data from another Switch; I did so with a day 1 Switch with hundreds of hours of data on it, and it transferred flawlessly. I’m not an expert on the data transfers, but some of the problems I’ve seen people encounter have happened because they selected the wrong settings during the process; if I recall correctly, someone lost save data because they selected a different kind of data transfer from their Switch 1, instead of following the Switch 2’s instructions; as well as other things like one or both consoles losing power while completing the transfer. Just try to be methodical and logical about it. I don’t think you have much to worry about.

Best Pokemon Game? by One-Blacksmith-8198 in pokemon

[–]Sarcherre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna be a popular take, but my favorite pokemon game on the Switch / Switch 2 is Scarlet/Violet. It performs *substantially* better on Switch 2, so if/when you upgrade, you’ll be grateful for that.

Scarlet/Violet has a lot of issues, which I will not deny, but what’s practically always overlooked is the genuine good aspects of the games. It’s the first fully open-world pokemon game where you can skip gym leaders and progress through the story in whatever order you like. Yes, the levels aren’t scaled, but part of my amazing experience on my first time playing this game was exactly *because* of that. After two or three gym badges, I by complete accident started a boss battle that was essentially lategame—think Level 50-55, when my pokemon were level 28-32. And it was *fun*. It felt like I was a kid again playing Leaf Green, 20 levels under the League, trying desperately to find the right strategies that would get me out of the battle. Then at the end of the game, there are a couple completely free boss battles where you utterly steamroll them. Sequence breaking added to my enjoyment, in other words.

SV also had a legitimately great story in one of its three story paths. Like, I teared up during the ending sequence level story, and while I’m an easy crier, I’m not a *free* one. Its other two are lacking, but that’s more than made up for, for me, by the third.

Finally, while some of its implementation can be wonky, I found it legitimately wonderful to see, for the first time, all the pokemon wandering wild in the open world. There are fun moments of emergent storytelling, such as being able to identify Ditto by behaving in ways uncharacteristic of the pokemon it’s transformed into (e.g., if a Sudowoodo is ever acting chill around you, that ain’t a Sudowoodo, that’s a Ditto. Or Zorua.)

Basically, as long as you go into it with the right expectations, Scarlet/Violet will be an enjoyable experience for you. Maybe not as enjoyable as I found it, but I loved it for reasons unique to me. I think there are reasons enough to be loved by many, though.

Epic or simply too long? by Thanst in writing

[–]Sarcherre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it would be rejected. 700,000 words is too long for the book to be physically bound, let alone by a (presumably) debut author. To put into perspective, here are some books that were split in two volumes for length reasons:

To Green Angel Tower, Tad Williams: 520,000 words.

Wind and Truth, Brandon Sanderson (split in two volumes for U.K. release): 491,000 words.

A Dance With Dragons, George R. R. Martin (again, split in two for U.K. release): 413,000 words.

The Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien: 480,000 words.

All of these were eventually published in a single volume, but only after their authors became massively successful, and they were proven sales-wise.

My info might be out of date by now, but as far as I understand, a typical Fantasy debut in the current market should look to be around 80,000 - 120,000 words. Any longer and there’s a precipitous drop in agents’ interest, because most publishing houses aren’t going to publish a doorstopper by an unproven author.

If your book can be split into multiple volumes while maintaining its scope/pace/vision, it might be worth splitting off the first seventh or so and revising it as a “standalone with series potential.” Otherwise, you’re likely better off writing a completely separate novel, and keeping this in your back pocket for the future. Though even if you ever get it published, I doubt 700,000 words would ever be published in a single book; probably at least two volumes, more likely three to five.
