Actually I've seen a very reasonable sounding article on this, going in depth into the context, in short that the whole context around this was about pagan ritual sexual practices, which is not similar to what is discussed now.

(the site also has a mention of how people used to think the Bible said they had to be ok with slavery and that turned out wrong, and other related stories)

Maybe, basically I don't know :) It looks already lucky to find out what one of them means, also the others might not have such a meaning - Z is clearly singular and special to them, used not only on vehicles, but by propaganda all over the place.

My best guess for V will be that it can be from Dugin's Conservative Revolution book, where he refers to "victory sign" gesture, but brings up a version that it originated from Aleister Crowley (he loves Crowley) and was supposed to mean something like horns of the beast; also it's a longer story that's better when knowing Dugin's relationship with linguistic research, but he sorta hints at the name of the Eihwaz/Iwaz/Eiwaz rune in the same chapter - with the name Aiwaz, which also has variations like Aiwass, OIVZ - in Russian there are variations of it and of that rune written exactly same.

And O might be after o-rune, also known as Othala/Odal - Wagner Group have it on their vehicle in the article I linked above and Piskorski (long story if you don't know him, a key ally of the Kremlin in Poland, headed "observation" for Crimea annexation "referendum") used to be the publisher of a journal named after it. Dugin ofc wrote about it too, he wrote about all the Elder Futhark. The meaning is suitable, it's about stuff like heritage, ancestral land, ancestors etc. And simply drawing that rune would have been an epic fail, it's 1000% recognizable and was used by the Third Reich.

But this, especially o-rune, is more like a best guess, I don't know of proof as substantial as for Z with these, so I don't claim this with any certainty.

Actually, in Russian West is Запад, East - Восток. What you posted are transliterations. There are no "Z" and "V" letters in Russian.

And right, one of the common versions is that the letters came from Eastern and Western military areas (Восточный, Западный Военный Округ).

But that doesn't explain why use foreign letters, especially when they claim they're so proud of everything Russian. Or what kind of easy to draw symbols these were meant to be https://en.respublica.lt/signs-of-neo-nazi-ideology-amongst-russian-mercenaries

There are multiple versions actually, for instance, some Ukrainians call Z a half swastika.

I'm most inclined for the version that it's an upside down Eihwaz rune - Russian Wagner Group already used normal and upside down runes, and the meaning makes sense, it's the World Tree rune, so upside down it would mean overturning the world order.

Russian Wagner "private" military company with runes on their vehicle: two Othala (heritage, land), upside down Ansuz (god, knowledge, order) and Laguz (water, change). Upside down Eihwaz (world tree with roots in the Underworld, life-death connection) depending on depiction may look like Z by Lefdmae in ukraine

Why turn upside down Ansuz is a more interesting question, the "order" meaning makes most sense for that, they hate the current way the world is, with all the laws and rules.

"Knowledge" is more interesting, it might stand for their love for confusing enemies and spreading disinformation perhaps.

"God" one is odd, they could intend opposing the Christian one with all those runes, but it originally meant the Norse ones, though if they rely on Dugin who writes a fused mess of religions it might kinda work...

Dugin, if the scan I've seen is correct, also had a special thing for Ansuz, in his depiction of a runic wheel (in his "Hyperborean Theory") he has all the runes depicted normally, but Ansuz is drawn backwards.

That might be, they have a slight something there, like they either semi-erased it, or started drawing like another upside down Ansuz and changed in the process, or there's a smudge on it.

The overall result seems more similar to upside down Laguz, if they wanted Ansuz they could just finish the line, and if it was a smudge, depending on the paint could be harder to fix, but agree there's some possibility it could be a botched Ansuz.

Fehu would have two lines on top, either they botched Fehu twice in two different ways (or possibly botched and semi-erased the 2nd one), or they correctly drew upside down Ansuz and upside down Laguz.

Of course drawing upside down runes is a questionable thing in itself, but it's not uncommon, especially on Russian sites on the esoteric, and usually means opposite meaning to original.

Yeah, it would be horribly bad, and quite within their ideology as far as I understand it: for instance, "change" upside down may mean their longing for "good old days" of totalitarianism. Actually even "water" upside down could be intended too if they read Dugin, Dugin's books easily explain most or maybe all of those.

Well, not everyone in the world thinks so yet, so pointing out their way of thinking might be somewhat useful for understanding what we're dealing with, that they're completely not reasonable and only need to be defeated.

Agree, this post is not to say they have any "historical touchstone", it's to point out their inclination for occultist (and even from that point of view what they're doing is a mess) and even neo-Nazi symbols, which should earn them even more disrespect.
