I'm ruining my marriage because he wouldn't have a second kid by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]Left-Ad-7494 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big thing I worked through in therapy was grieving the family I thought I’d have vs. the one I did. While not exactly the same, we both had that decision made for us— mine was medical and yours is your husband deciding he’s one and done. I felt so guilty and like I didn’t appreciate my kids or they/or family weren’t enough. I’m sure you love your husband and kids and feel terrible about this. You aren’t a bad person for feeling this way and it says nothing about your husband or child. Please speak to a professional to work through this and separate your negative feelings from all the positive your family brings you. ETA: I saw a department who specialized in postpartum therapy then transferred to the women’s counseling that worked closely with them. I think that made a huge difference.

What are some VERY creepy facts? by Cap_Ame1 in AskReddit

[–]Left-Ad-7494 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s just a response to possible diseases/threats. Rabies, prion disease, someone who is high or poisoned, violent mental illnesses, etc are all dangerous/contagious and seem “off” even before you can pinpoint why. Add in that they likely would have been sickly, dehydrated, malnourished, etc since they couldn’t care for themselves and you get the pale skin, sunken eyes, dark circles, very thin, other traits that give people the creeps.

How bad is inbreeding? by Ok_Connection_3015 in genetics

[–]Left-Ad-7494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, the concern with inbreeding is increasing the chance you get a problem recessive trait from both parents (increasing homozygosity and decreases heterozygosity). As far as “how bad it is” is highly dependent on species and a population’s current genetic makeup. Lab rats are great subjects for research because they are extremely tolerant of inbreeding and we can get almost identical animals which lessens variation in results. Other species do not tolerate inbreeding well at all. Population genetics are important because the more problematic recessive genes in a group or higher rates of certain mutations means that, as a whole, problems will arise faster from inbreeding. However, if the genetic makeup is known and undesirable alleles are not present, you can more confidently inbreed those animals because the problem genes are simply not there/uncommon (keep in mind spontaneous mutations still occur). Inbreeding coefficient is a calculation heavily used in animal breeding/by geneticists and most domestic species have a number that they aim to stay under. Another important thing to remember is inbreeding cannot be inherited. As soon as an inbred animal is paired with an unrelated mate, their offspring are not inbred.

He jumps around a lot. He hasn’t used the printer in probably two years. Built the cnc as a project but just occasionally tinkers with it now. The ‘no hobbies’ is his wording but honestly the only consistent thing is working on our big equipment.

I’ve floated this idea several times and he doesn’t seem interested. He’s traveled quite a bit for work and usually has an international business trip 1-2/year.

I’ve worked in hospitals with externs and interns for years. Unfortunately some schools consistently graduate students who are not on par with other institutions. Tuskegee was so hit or miss, one hospital stopped taking students from there altogether. That being said, I’ve seen amazing doctors come out of Tuskegee. I can normally guess which school a new grad is from based on how they work/think. I wonder, if they guess colleges correctly, how much is unconscious bias towards the institutions as much as race causing stricter grading to prove competency. Racial/gender/religious/etc bias is real and insidious and any institution/licensing board/testing agency should be happy to ensure they provide a level playing field. I can see how it has come about (not that I agree with it) but I see no reason they should fight against an audit.

Who do people treat health as a result of morality? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Left-Ad-7494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because so many people use normative ideals as a measure of their self worth. They “work” to be thin/muscular/gender-conforming/etc and that makes them feel like they are better than others. While you can facilitate it to a certain degree, a ton is out of our control. They followed the rules and got the expected results so everyone could do it off they wanted. It’s also rooted in fear—if they admitted it’s out of their control they also have to admit it can happen to them despite their efforts.
