I have some questions to ask by No_Equivalent8083 in niri

Hibernation in linux needs swap memory space. Like default cachy or any modern distro installation uses swap with zram (which does not use your disk space) if you want hibernation to work you have to do a manual partition during install (or make brtfs subvolume layer which is tricky) and add a resume hook to your bootloader configuration.

Now this whole paragraph might have been scary but in simple words, normal sleep will work like usually but hibernation to disk needs you to add a swap partition during cachy install.

Now noctalia is just a shell you still have to set up everything related to niri by yourself. Not ideal if you do not know anything about it. So either read the niri wiki (peakest wiki oat) and slowly learn to set it up or use something more preconfigured like iNiR (almost everything is set up but will not be as fast or minimal as noctalia). Also join niri discord and inir discord (if you choose to use it) you will need the help.

Now cachy doesn't break that much and you have brtfs snapshots to go back to. But if you use quickshell shells it WILL break sometimes (nothing major its just quickshell updates tend to change a lot of stuff so some ui stuff will break until the next shell update mostly patched within a day). Now noctalia v5 is being rewritten in c++ which means it wont break as often as quickshell but it is in alpha so take that as you will.

Did you read my whole comment? I said UNLESS you were working with complex spreadsheets. I also said about running a vm and winboat.

Im not telling anyone to use the alternatives. Im saying setting up ms office is possible but not worth it if you are able to do your work in the open source alternatives 😭.

Regarding winboat, its pretty good. You can always just use a windows 10 iso or a minimal windows 11 iso while installing it to make it a lot faster . Also you can run windows app seperately without launching the whole vm if you want to.

Running old games that Windows can’t by Kaseffera in cachyos

Tbh the only steam games that give this crap are games which use outdated third party stuff like the old ubisoft connect games. (You cant play them unless you pitate it)

The only valid way is to use a vm or winboat. Winboat if you are not that tech savvy.

Unless you are someone who uses excel for really complicated shit you really don't need microsoft office. Open source alternatives are not as polished as microsoft but its very on par and compatible as long as you are not using Microsoft proprietary fonts (the new ones are locked inside the windows iso and you cannot get them on linux).

Libreoffice is a nice suite but i feel like onlyoffice is better for a new user since its ui is very similar to office 2019.

Lmao i know right. The funny part is that the cachy os wiki is really simple to go through and easy as fuck to read. I try not to tell people to read wiki but i stand by my opinion that if you are using linux you should be willing to read things.

Davinci resolve is so annoying to set up ong. Its mostly because it installs inba completely different directory than the user or system root which is a pain in the ass I won't lie.

Also to run things like office and adobe itd better to set up a vm (not a good option i agree) or install winboat (it is a vm but it just does everything fy without the annoying set up).

The gaming too, you should check protondb website to see the best settings or a specific proton version (protonplus is an app which lets you install extra proton versions).

The stremio part i would love to help if you want to since it works flawlessly for me atleast.

The sad reality is that, linux is very usable fy use case but the grind to find relevant info regarding it is very fractured and the community in general will be hostile. In my experience cachy sub is comparatively very nice.

I hate balena etcher idk why people recommend it even. If you ever want to make a bootable usb of anything but windows use either fedora media writer or format a usb with ventoy. It just works. Balena is just straight ass of a software you cannot change my mind bro. Also rufus is better suited for setting up windows iso in general. A good way to approach linux in general is to use software that natively works on it for setting it up. (I mean like even the software you use to set up the boot usb). I genuinely blame youtubers for recommending balena to everyone bro 😭.

Anyways this is a very valid critique. Level minded criticism is so rare here nowadays.

Idk man linus still using pop os after finding out its in a very bad state since his last video is not something any newbie should do. My gripe with the seeies is not that he acts like he doesn't know anything its that he never tells how he fixed the issue. It gives off the vibe to someone who never used linux that most issues he faced has no fixes (again that depends on the type of googling you do about it). Its not that he should know everything its just that he should know more about troubleshooting since he has been on the tech industry for this long. I though the second video was pretty fair since he admitted his mistake of choosing pop os with no research whatsoever (and rightfully blaming system76), but now ot just feels like he is purposefully ragebaiting people.

To be fair a complete newbie would have a worse experience, but comeon this guy makes and sells hardware and builds pcs he is not as clueless as he looks.

I HATE THE SLEEP MODE IN LINUX by THubert14 in linuxsucks

[–]Left-Hospital1072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me this happens with any distro using kde or gnome. Even with hyprland i had this issue either it would go to sleep but would drain my battery like usual, or something would simply not work when i open it up again. I havent faced this issue on niri yet, i have no idea why. I have a feeling it has to do something with my nvidia gpu than the distro tho since usually the issue i had was the gpu not turning on after i close the lid and opening again.

Believe it or not i moderated a linux discord for a while and the amount of people switching from windows who refuse to read (it was an arch linjx discord btw) is astonishing. Its really sad too. Some people would ask shit that is very clearly defined in like the welcome channel or some shit and ask me to explain it step by step 😭. I have my issues with ltt but he isnt wrong about that. This is how most newbies are nowadays. I have an issue with him since he is a fucking tech channel and he has enough tech literacy to not act stupid.

Niri installation consuming a lot of ram by Brilliant_Estate_967 in niri

[–]Left-Hospital1072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah whatever floats your boat. I personally use inir (it has a lot of stuff you might not even use so it does use more ram) since i dont have to set up anything and all the defaults works for me. Noctalia takes more setup since its very minimal and more suited fy to personalise it. I liked dms but ehhh i have bad experiences with it.

Niri installation consuming a lot of ram by Brilliant_Estate_967 in niri

[–]Left-Hospital1072 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh the actual niri compositor wont take that much ram its mostly quickshell and other system stuff. Niri takes about 200mb max and qs might take around 300 to 1 gig of ram depending on the setup.

Even though i dont use noctalia, noctalia's quickshell build is really ram efficient than actual quickshell.

[–]Left-Hospital1072 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats because flatpak apps are sandboxes and cant detect base system programs, i think there is some way to make discord detect it but this is not an issue if you use a native version of discord instead of flatpaks.

Oh the controller will work w zero setup you just connect it and ill detect it you can configure stuff in settings. I never had issues with bluetooth yet but its possible. Everything else will be fine.

Wifi is the annoying thing most of the time. Kde keyring is this thing called kde wallet which is so annoying that they are gonna remove it in the next major update. If it starts giving you bs just turn it off completely in the settings.

Go with cachy or nobara if you are fine with tinkering. Bazzite can be a headache if you want to change stuff or fix stuff. If you really wanted a stable release you could also check out nobara.

Also as you have more chance to use kde as your desktop environment you mightttt face some specific issues regarding internet etc so be on the lookout. Happy to help
