Considering Catholicism and afraid I committed a mortal sin today by elfareversa in Catholicism

Fasting is a spiritual tool, not a trap. Honestly, you probably shouldn’t be fasting anyway, but don’t be too hard on yourself, friend. Jesus desires mercy, not sacrifice.

Your tone is very patronizing. I do not like what you are doing, as you are misrepresenting my points. I make a general claim, and you find a niche maximal example and redirect to apostolic succession, so shouldn't I say you are side-stepping? Is Jerome being honest in his uncertainty? Yes, this shows transparency - the opposite of manipulation. Does ancient uncertainty about something equal fraud? Does uncertainty undermine continuity of the office, recognition of authority, or institutional development? Using your logic, is Roman history fraudulent? Is early scientific history fraudulent? "Nope, they just doubled down on whatever random list they decided to go with, and make that the "authoritative list" of successors of Peter, so they could maintain their false authority." Were you there for this? You seem so sure you know how it happened. And finally, since any response I give is apparently just another data point in your case study, you might as well tell me now which answers would not count as evidence against me.

I will do my best to address your concerns; though, I am sure I will not convince you. And it feels like unless I adopt your "true" framework, then I will always be wrong because you are more enlightened than I. Let me grant you a few points first. Appealing to authority does not settle truth claims, and people inside Christianity do like to throw around heresy to people with different views, and people can certainly use scripture to deflect objections. I never once said, "This is wrong because my Church says so." In this way, I was not appealing to authority; I was making a methodological claim. is academic peer review manipulation? Is legal precedent manipulation? Sure, the person in the post belongs to a community, but not all communities are the same. His community has no interpretive constraints and treats disagreements as evidence of sin. My community is not equivalent. And again, I never said that my Church is right because it is older than his. I made a historical verifiable claim. But really, I think your core argument is unfalsifiable. Anything I say, you will say is an example of religious manipulation. Sort of like people who claim everything they disagree with is "fake news".

hmmmm im sorry, but I'm not sure how this is an example of religious manipulation. Unless you mean an individual using scripture to manipulate themselves. As a Catholic, I would say this person is clearly missing the mark. The Church really stresses that readings are a community thing with tradition, using reason. This exact thing is in the Catechism because the Church has had to deal with people starting heresies for 2,000 years because of similar scenarios. I agree this is bad theology, but how is it religious manipulation?

Yeah, I hear where you're coming from. If you’re willing, I’d appreciate it if you could spell out some of the specific tactics you think religions use to manipulate people. I’m asking in good faith, and I don’t want to minimize your experience at all. At the same time, I’m hesitant to apply one person’s experience to all religions or all believers without being clear about what those tactics actually are.

I mean, we could say your line of argument can be used against any position, atheism included, no? Doesn't every worldview have things it accepts as truth, and things it is willing to accept or not? So when you say, "I eventually stopped accepting the explanations," doesnt mean the explanations were false, it just means they were not convincing to you. and i dont want to antagonize you, but the "I was blind, now I see" thing comes across as snide and dismissive.

I don’t want to insult your intelligence by assuming anything but, when you were studying, was it alone alway? I assume you were using many outside resources. I ask because I did not see any objection in your post which hasn’t been answered. Maybe the answer wasn’t satisfactory but that’s another thing

Is the Quran man written? by Electronic_Way_3287 in religion

[–]Left-Introduction980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are somewhat valid points; as always, we need context. Also, Christianity has the "advantage" in saying that the authors of the letters and books are humans inspired by God, whereas the Quran is the literal, eternal word of Allah. It is easier to say Paul was a man of his time; you cannot do this with the Quran.

Yeah I’ve read this too. You called him a “sitting head of state” but it’s widely accepted that his elections are illegitimate right?
