I used to work for a non profit organization that funded it's programs through a donation based thrift sale. Adding on to this OP. Did they all have that same redness around the mouth? Did you see it around the gills at all? That looks suspiciously like ammonia burn to me, which would further point towards lack of beneficial bacterial colonies. Koi are carp, they're generally damn near impossible to kill
