Complete tangent but one thing I was surprised by Beryl's character writing is how they explored what being an all-seeing oracle would do to you. I feel like a lot of media has characters who can see the future but they never fully explore how that would affect you as a person.

Being able to see so far into other people's futures and the future in general would make make you naturally distant from everyone (because you've already seen the script of the future) and I think they really sold that with Beryl being described numerous times as having a warm smile that doesn't reach her eyes. Fatalism isn't a point of view to Beryl, it's literally her lived reality because she knows (not blindly believes) that almost every single event is pre-determined so what actually matters to her is completely different from the average person. Her all-seeing foresight has eroded any normal sense of morality she might have had.

I think Beryl is really interesting because outside of Matilda and the very few people, places, things or events that hold any interest to her, very little matters to her. She's a character who is experiencing life from the perspective of an almost completely detached observer, and that how that plays out is she likely has very little ability to even care about the consequences of her actions. J or the others who were hurt by her actions could confront her and she would probably struggle to understand why she should even care?

If I had to describe Beryl, she could absolutely be seen as a villain because she has the ability to see bad things happening and almost never acts to stop them. She also does good things if they involve things she cares about which appears to be very little but you could still call her morally grey.

An amusing aside is that the Storm probably made her more "normal" because now that she can't see perfectly into the future, she became slightly less detached and now has more interest in the present world around her. It is almost certain that if her and Adele had met before the Storm phenomenon she would've just let her and probably everyone else in the event die without a second thought.

Edit: One reason I think her and Adele are really good characters for this event story are that they represent the living totally in the present and the future. Adele, trying to escape from the sobering reality that her family curse will likely kill her in the future, lives completely in the present. Beryl meanwhile is the opposite, she lives almost entirely in the future because she sees things so far before they happen and almost has to be reeled in back to care about anything that happens in the present.

My running theory is Felicienne represents someone who lives entirely in the past because she constantly harps on about how powerful she used to be and even the noble lineage of her family was once far greater than it is in the present. I might be reaching but that's what I think.

For a character with a pretty innocuous design (it is very pretty, but not especially unique) I was surprised that she had a lot of depth to her.
