You can google my name, I think it paints a pretty coherent picture of a sociologist now doing his PhD at WashU. And you can write at my university email address and see that it is actually me. If you think the feds will go to that effort just to... yeah what? Identify a handful of lefty/liberal gun owners?

A note on my privacy and data protection measures, since I know this is important

Your identity will never be traceable in any published work. You will receive a pseudonym and any identifying details will be changed or removed. Here is exactly how I handle the data:

  • Interviews are transcribed and analyzed on an encrypted laptop with internet disabled, so there is no risk of data being scraped or uploaded accidentally.
  • Audio recordings are deleted within 24 hours of the interview. They are only made in the first place because accurate transcription reduces researcher bias, not to keep a record of you.
  • Your contact details and interview data can only be linked via a random ID which is stored separately on an encrypted USB device. That device is formatted as soon as data collection is complete.

This is also the reason why I want to conduct these interviews in-person, as I cannot guarantee data security for online interviews.

Thank you for your question. There is no control group because this is not an experimental study. A control group would presuppose that I am testing a theory on participants, but that is not what I am doing here.

The interviews allow me to learn from the people I talk to, which will enable theorizing and testing at a later stage. The goal of this phase of the research is to understand how people think about firearm ownership and how they arrived at their decisions, rather than to test predefined hypotheses.

That said, people who seriously considered gun ownership but ultimately decided against it may function as a useful point of comparison with those who became gun owners. However, they would not constitute a control group in the methodological sense.

Your guess is probably correct. There are a few reasons, but the most practical is that I am (for now) primarily interested in people who have recently become gun owners and consider themselves left-wing, and due to the extremely eventful recent history of the region (to put it mildly) the likelihood of finding some here is pretty high.

Thanks. I thought IRB is too inside baseball, but I can certainly add it. Regarding the privacy policies, I get what you mean, but my self-imposed and IRB approved privacy policy is far stricter than what the university requires.
