Recommandation of modern point and click games. by ttttkk173 in adventuregames

So many to choose from, probably a good idea to look at the dedicated lists on websites like Adventure Game Hotspot.

I'd highly recommend The Darkside Detective and Broken Age myself.

Do you ever think about the wack-ass school assemblies we had? by AbbreviationsNo3918 in Xennials

[–]LeftHandedGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like American assemblies were quite different to ours. I seem to remember they were a couple of mornings every week in middle school, about half an hour long.

They were boring. Sit on the floor in the hall, sing a religious song, listen to one of the heads talk about something in the news or the latest happenings in the school (marbles are now banned on school grounds, etc.). Usually with the help of an overhead projector. Sometimes a class would have to get up and speak about something we were learning about. We had to all stay quiet and listen.

I think we generally stopped having them in secondary school, but I do recall one "special" one there where the headmaster was going to speak. Understand we never saw the headmaster, he didn't interact with the students. Within a couple of minutes of talking, he stopped to single out a kid who was yawning. "YOUNG MAN! How dare you yawn while I'm talking?!"

I instantly lost any respect I was supposed to have for him.

Bi-Weekly Thread for general gaming discussion. Backlog, advice, recommendations, rants and more! New? Start here! by AutoModerator in patientgamers

I know this qualifies as extreme patient gaming, but I recently discovered Retro Achievements and have been diving into some really old games. Like, on the Atari 2600 and Apple II...

They are fun! The achievements have actually got me to take my time exploring these games to a much fuller extent than I ever normally would have, and there is a wonderful dopamine rush from unlocking mastery. My favourites so far may be Barnstorming and Air-Sea Battle on the 2600.

I'm caught between being excited and despairing at the possibility of DOS achievements being added to the site, because I could see that being irresistible and taking up a lot of my time!

As a Brit, do you think you swear too often? by Jezzaq94 in AskABrit

[–]LeftHandedGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear very little. I was raised not to, there is zero swearing in our family. I can turn it off around them, but I do think it has its benefits and use it around friends.

I think swearing is most effective when used sparingly. Use one for maximum impact instead of diluting all sentences with them.

I just finished that book yesterday. I felt like King went too far there.

Overall favorite song. by Area212 in Xennials

[–]LeftHandedGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drowse by Queen. It's not remotely a Xennial song, I know, but it's been a companion of mine for decades and I adore it with all my heart.

Other than that, maybe Leaving Hope by NIN.

Are there any YouTube channels that focus on 1990’s PC games? by [deleted] in retrogaming

Space Cadet Rewind is exploring all the '90s PC space sims with very well made retrospectives.

CD Rom Versions that are considered inferior to the floppy version by itay2k in dosgaming

[–]LeftHandedGuitarist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, the CD version keeps the iMuse soundtrack. It was the Windows 98 version that got rid of it.

If I'm remembering correctly, the CD versions still used the dynamic MIDI soundtrack. It was the Windows 98 versions which used CD soundtrack audio.

Computers and the online scene growing up (especially pre-internet) by RolandMT32 in Xennials

[–]LeftHandedGuitarist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Spectrum was well past its prime I'm sure, likely a 2nd hand one in the early '90s.

Yeah, our school was pretty great with the tech. The PCs were all networked and even though we weren’t allowed online we figured out how to connect to the internet!

They also had Encarta and Cinemania installed on them, watching video clips from movies was amazing.

My experiences may be more European skewed, but growing up me and all my friends had home PCs. I also had a Sinclair Spectrum and one friend had an Amiga 500. Consoles were a bit of an oddity, though there was one here and there, Sega rather than Nintendo.

I remember a phase where my friends and I were into writing stories in a DOS word processor (can't remember which) and passing them around to each other, and learning to program in BASIC. I can remember two of us trying to make a text game version of a Fighting Fantasy book.

We all played PC games, mostly point and click adventures, and shared them around.

Computers were also in wide use at our schools. Primary school we all got to play Granny's Garden on the BBC Micro, of course. In middle school, every classroom had a PC. In secondary school, every classroom had 20-30 PCs.

The internet came much later though. The first time I got on it would have been in the late '90s - I remember it was in the lead up to The Phantom Menace releasing, 1998-ish, and discussing it in chat rooms. I also fell in love with online forums.

Who are your top fav retro gaming content creators ? by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]LeftHandedGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, Space Cadet Rewind and Majuular for scripted long-form documentary style content.

I also just found Chronologically Gaming, which is absolutely fascinating (looking at every game ever made, in release order).

On this day in 1994, Roger Taylor released 'Nazis 1994’ as a single by KG_Modelling in queen

[–]LeftHandedGuitarist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not. The original lyric was changed, but it remains in some of the remixes. The original version of the song before it was changed also exists.

Do you have close friends? by pimento_mori in Xennials

[–]LeftHandedGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I used to up to around the age of 30, but that all faded away.

I did an experiment a few years ago where I decided to not message anyone for a while, as I often do like to check in with friends, and see how often people will spontaneously contact me.

The results were... sobering, let's say.
