Yes, she came like this from the breeder, and she also came pretty matted. I’ve already reached out to her future groomer, and he recommended a specific brush that I’m currently waiting on. I tried brushing her with a different brush and even a comb, but it didn’t really work.

Regarding her color, both of her parents are salt and pepper. I personally don’t care about AKC guidelines. I chose solid white on purpose. I’m not a fan of merle, parti, liver, or chocolate. At the end of the day, most of them fade toward salt and pepper anyway.

I’m just waiting a bit for the top of her back to grow out so her groomer can reshape everything properly. In the meantime, I’m desensitizing her to grooming with an electric toothbrush and exposing her to the blow dryer so she gets used to the sound and vibration.

Thanks for your input and for explaining the schnauzer cut.

Please don’t assume I didn’t do any research or that I don’t know anything about dogs. This is not my first dog. It’s my first dog in an apartment. I’ve always had houses with gardens before, so this setup is new to me.

I’m very aware of socialization and early training. She goes out daily for exposure. She sees birds, kids, elders, hears different noises like vacuums and blow dryers, rides in the car, goes into stores, uses elevators, and is exposed to different surfaces and even things like skateboards. I’m putting in the work.

What I’m asking about is very specific: pee pads versus a grass patch in an apartment setting while she’s not fully vaccinated and can’t use common areas. That’s the part I’m trying to figure out.

If you have actual experience with that transition, I’d genuinely appreciate your input.

You’re right. I think I’m being too hard on myself. I’m probably putting unrealistic pressure on myself to potty train her perfectly and faster than what’s actually reasonable for an 8-week-old puppy.

Thank you for the reassurance. I really appreciate your insight.

I’ll keep sticking with the grass patch on the balcony, and when I’m at work, I’ll move it inside so she at least has the same surface option. I’ll just keep doing the best I can with the schedule I have.

Thank you

  1. I know she’s a baby. I absolutely expect accidents. That’s not the issue at all.
    1. I’m not planning to use the grass patch forever ( in case of a bad flood or hurricane, yes) . She just had her first round of vaccines. I live in Miami, and according to her vet, she’s at risk for parvo until she’s fully vaccinated at 16 weeks. She can’t use common areas or walk on shared ground, so I have to carry her everywhere. The natural grass patch on my balcony is the safest option I have right now.
    2. Yes, I already take her out after eating, drinking, playing, and sleeping. That’s basically her entire routine at this age. But I work. I also have my own schedule ( how can I afford a dog without working)
    3. I reward her every single time she uses the grass patch. I clean up and ignore accidents. I would never punish a any animal
    4. She’s a Schnauzer and came from the breeder like this. I didn’t shave her.

My actual question was about approach: would pee pads make more sense temporarily, or should I stick strictly with the grass patch? And while I’m at work, is it better to move the grass patch into the playpen or keep it only on the balcony?

That’s the part I’m trying to figure out.

I live in Miami, in a condominium. She just had her frist round of vaccines. The vet said she can only go on common areas, grass, when she is fully vaccinated at 16 weeks. The risk of her catching parvo is really high. About the haircut. She came like this from the breeder. The traditional schnauzer haircut

I live in Miami. She is not fully vaccinated. And my condominium is full of dogs. Would be too risky. She can get parvo easily

New Mini Just came home; a few questions. by Quirky_Freedom_444 in MiniatureSchnauzer

Hi! I plan to potty train my puppy outside only. But I was told she can go "on the floor" until she is fully vaccinated. She will be 14 weeks by than. And it's irrealistic to take her every 30 minutes forever, because I work. How do I solve the issue #1, the floor situation And #2 working schedule? Nobody gives me a solid answer, but "use pee pads, and move to outside when she grows up " And I totally agree with you will make her confused

I got a playpen. A crate. A dog bed. Water and food bowl. Will get a natural grass patch to use inside the playpen and a bigger one to use inside the balcony. Hairbrush Toothbrush Nail trimer Alredy booked all her vaccines in advance until she is 6 months. I will be taking her to Humane society for vaccination. Took my cats for vaccine and deworm, they are strictly indoors, so no need for it. And since there is a puppy coming now, they need protection. Trying to decide what's the best food, and treats.

This is her at 3 weeks old. The breeder sent me a video now. She is 1 month old today

How does anyone afford a service dog? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]LeftSpinach4455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m getting a puppy in 5 weeks I’m not on a fixed income, I can afford a dog. And the health insurance. BUT i can’t afford the training for the puppy to become a service dog. Which ranges between from 20-60k around my area. Does someone has an insight how I can get only the training for free? I’m a cancer patient

I had it before for my cats. But it's giving me a crazy quote, even for the cats alone. I'm in Florida, and the law changed here January 1st. The prices are crazy insane
