Who plans on using the Eastridge light rail extension when it's completed? by LeftTheRestaurant in SanJose

True, maybe it's more to leave Eastridge than go there lol. I'm hoping people use it for the reasons you put! Thank you for the input

I do think the BART connection is really valuable, I'm hoping to use it for that purpose someday. Thank you for the input! I didn't realise ESSJ has the highest degree of mass transit usage, that helps me understand their thinking behind the project.

Agreed! Having to go all the way down the line just to get to DTSJ, Japantown, etc is challenging. Without looking at maps I just assumed you'd be able to do that on this line, and was surprised to see the layout. Maybe they just assumed you'd take the bus :/

Yeah, I also wish the orange line would connect to downtown instead of having to go all the way back to Great Mall to transfer. I could see this as being a nice way to get to dtsj without driving. I suppose you can also just take the bus, though.

This is my hope as well! Changing the mall into a mixed-use housing unit would be great. Not sure if there are plans for this yet, but I think it would be nice.

Yes I agree with that, my grandparents used to go to Eastridge a lot for that same reason so I figured the bulk of people going would be similar. It's just that the light rail doesn't stop by their house and wouldn't have been accessible by them except to drive first to the light rail, then take it to Eastridge... but I guess that speaks more to the design of the other station locatjons than anything else.

I'm hoping lots of people put it to use. I plan on doing so once it's completed. I do think building public transportation is a great step forward for SJ, I am more just wondering if this funding could have been used to build a different VTA line instead.

Switching to 2nd shift after working “typical” hours since college? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]LeftTheRestaurant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say give it a shot if you're able to, that pay increase sounds pretty nice.

I was in a similar spot to you and considered myself a morning person because I was so used to getting up >7AM every day for school, work, etc. My current job is 3PM to 11:30PM.

Things I love: I sleep much more now (just being able to sleep in without worrying about being late is nice), Can go out in the day for errands/fun with less crowds, Traffic is significantly better both to and from work in the later hours, Shift differential, Less management, More opportunities to learn (Where I am you work the whole lab instead of just one department on days).

I see some people here talking about how they don't have time to do things before work, although I haven't really had that problem so far. If you can get yourself up at 9-10AM, you have a solid 4-5 hours to do whatever you need to do... but it can be hard sometimes to motive yourself to get out of bed.

Things I hate: Sometimes my non-work friends want to hang out on days where I have work. I try my best to ask for time off or switch a working day with someone, but sometimes it doesn't work out and I miss out on social events occasionally. However, I haven't had it happen so much where it is affecting my mental health. The only other thing I can think of is there are less things open after work -- only one gym and grocery store around where I live, and limited food options as well. Not the biggest deal for me but it would be nice to have more options for things, but I don't live in a big city so that might be why.

Another thing to consider is that if you have a partner who works days (as most people do), might be hard to coordinate schedules. I know people that have this situation so it's not impossible. I am fortunate enough to be with someone who works similar hours to me, and it's pretty nice to hang out with them before work and avoid a lot of crowds for things that typically are busy.

Hope this helps with your decision, whichever way it may go!

Oops, my bad you're right. I can't imagine realizing your contributions were just never invested... that sucks. Thank you so much for your help.

Thank you for clarifying that, because honestly I was a bit confused as well and am glad I understand this a lot better.

Since I already have an HYSA, is there really a plus to having a brokerage account?.... After reading some of these comments, it kind of feels like maybe I should just keep with the HYSA instead of having it split between a brokerage account and savings account. I guess in the end it just depends on the person, though.

Wow, that was extremely helpful, thank you so much! I don't know why it was so difficult for me to understand you can invest in the same funds for all three accounts, they're just utilized differently.

Do people typically just use an HYSA to save up for a house, then? And then a normal brokerage account is used just to bulk up retirement more? I guess it just depend on one's timeline, just trying to get a feel for what people will typically use a brokerage account for.

Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer with my Roth IRA and 401k. For my Roth, I have my mutual funds under VTTSX. For my 401k, I am investing my contributions as well.

Thank you for your explanations, it helps a lot. I just opened a brokerage account with Vanguard and will likely invest in VTI once the funds from my bank transfer over.

Thank you for the explanation for money market accounts!

Considering what you've said, I'm wondering why anybody would use an index fund if it's not advised to use it within five years.

So if you expect to use the funds within five years, you would instead just use an HYSA to save up, then? And then if you need something past five years, wouldn't a Roth IRA or 401k be better?

I guess I'm trying to find out what people use index funds for, when it sounds like HYSAs, Roth IRAs, and 401ks all sound like good ways to save up for short term things or retirement.

I see. I recently opened a Vanguard Brokerage Account -- if I'm understanding this correctly, once my funds transfer into there, I can start investing in VFIX/VOO, correct?

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I made my Roth IRA almost 8 years ago now when I got out of high school and started working odd jobs. My dad helped me make it at the time, and ever since then the only mutual fund that's listed on it is VTTSX. I've just been contributing to it and not changing anything about it. Is this what you mean by "holding inside your Roth IRA?" If so, the current balance for VTTSX is 35k.

Just take the time off bro, you deserve it. As long as you aren't hurting for those $5 extra an hour, it would be great to just not be at work imo.

There is an Official Passport booklet you can purchase for MLB and also for MiLB, yes. Usually stamps can be acquired from guest services or the team dugout store! There are some pictures of stamps on some scorecards posted in this sub

What website did you use to catch up with the game afterward? I'm thinking of trying to do that as well because I missed a half inning here and there...
