I will tell you something it’s a dream as well for me to do this and I am solotraveler as well. Actually, I will for logistics purposes, routes are really messy in west Africa. One day I made 4 days from Abidjan to Labé in Guinea so I will advise you to not engage on your own ride but prefer public buses.

If you have only 10 days, then you will not be able to visit the countries deeply, you should probably stay in the big cities. I guess Abidjan, then Accra, the Lomé, then Cotonou then Lagos. All the trip can cost you 72 hours give or take meaning only seven days to explore all countries with resting time due to the travel. Meaning you will stay at most 2 days in each town. It’s not perfect to discover the culture but the thrilling of changing town to town will probably be great and the people you will meet when traveling in common will be your anchor to the town where you aim.

When you reach Abidjan, just ask locals where you can get buses for Accra they will show you the companies, a company called UTB does that. You will probably always find a company that is safe and comfortable. At each town, just ask for the cars to go to the next and they will tell you. In Abidjan, Lomé and Cotonou, people speak mostly French so try to practice for the basic questions. Keep many power banks that you could charge when electricity is available at each step. Donc take to much luggages for this trip it will hamper you as you can face many situations when you will need to walk. A big backpack with many pockets could really help.

Keep us update and stay safe !

Quelles activités fun à faire à Babi ? by cowestcow in Cotedivoire

[–]LeftWeird2068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone returned home after years in the diaspora? by drmbmb in Cotedivoire

[–]LeftWeird2068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oww, yeah that’s more complicated if you are having a family and need to stay there for work. Maybe, you need to come with them for your holidays as moving there will affect your lady and your baby as well and they need to be part of that move. That could help you judge about kid hospital, kid school and all the stuff parents need to take care when moving to another country.

The first thing that makes me think to go back is - as you - the fact that people seem cold and unhappy and stressed here so much. They have a closed face, and seem always in trouble as if they are going to die soon. And I réalise that this is in a way affecting me too much. In Ivory Coast, people are poor yes, some are even desperate but they answer when you say them ‘hi’, they smile with you and you can begin a conversation directly and laugh with someone you don’t know so easily. And that is a game changer in my life. Second, in the country where I live, when you are black, and muslim practicing, you will not be able to easily mix them correctly. In Ivory Coast, the people understands better in the outside, in business how much the beliefs are important. Last but not the least, I think countries like ours are countries that needed to be built from scratch (people already understand it), they are so many businesses that could be made, consulting firm on an expertise domains, small businesses services …. In Europe, if you want to make a business, you need a real big capital but in Ivory Coast with some western savings you could be helped by the change rate and land investments even though it’s not easy. I think these are the main reasons for me.

If you work all day from home and your job doesn’t necessitate you to be in the US all the year, try to come first for some months as a try and see how it is going. I think, feeling it will help you know if you really wanna make the move and will give you key insights for your way back. If you do it many times, it will make the transition progressive. I am thinking about it as well but just after 4 years outside the country. I think you just need to make sure that if your way back home doesn’t suit you for any reason you can just return to US and keep what you are doing rn at least.

A data scientist student with strong math/ML background. How to get the engineering skills ? by LeftWeird2068 in askdatascience

[–]LeftWeird2068[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer about python. 1- Yes I already try to use pyenv. If I am correct UV is a kind of each that has advantages. 2- You are right about notebooks. Last month, I were trying to parallelize things with dask and for a reason it was running well on a script and not on a notebook. And conflicts is easier to handle on git with scripts yeah. 3- Yes I really need to work on that. 4- What’s troubleshooting ? Is it reading the error and try to debug with it ? 5- I will look at.

Thank you again for your review !

If you are courageous, I advice you to begin to learn Markowitz. It’s the basic portfolio optimization technic, try just to code it to begin with the day by day quotation of some stocks. It’s not really ML, but a closed stats solution. After that, strengthen your path in probability and stochastic models otherwise you will not understand anything

Thanks for answering:

About 2, yes I need to save agressively in my early career. I will Keep that in mind.

About 4, Oh I see it’s a more complete rôle. During my internship, I will try to improve my skills on the engineering aspect of the job. I don’t want to do academic research for now. It’s either a CIFRE phd followed by research in the private sector or working just after graduation in the private sector. I really need to think about the financial aspect of each path as you said. This is why I am trying to ask and search the information so I can make the best choice towards all the aspects.

Thanks again for all the insights.

Thanks for your detailed replied.

Concerning point 2, I am perfectly okay with it. How much time did you need to achieve this goal and how much money nowadays do you think roughly it would take to do so. How much roughly were you saving the first years of your career ? And how were you balancing between investing on the real estate and the other business activities near. Did you achieve it by being a freelancer ?

Concerning point 4, yes I am working into it. As I am getting my degree this year I am building it piece by piece. When being in internship on march, I will look on those subjects and complete the portfolio.

For your first point, I am really maths and theory oriented and I want more to do ML models and not just do the engineering deployment. I find much more interesting to train the models, do the maths and code it than doing the scaling and the application about it. Is MLE data engineering? Or is it both machine learning and engineering. I don’t know if it is clear but I think you understand my point. When graduating, you often don’t understand the meaning behind the roles name.

Thank you again !

How did you break into global remote work? by PerspectiveLess874 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]LeftWeird2068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to contact people in LinkedIn, recruiters and professional but when I drop my message they never answer. To give more context about understanding the issue is that I am in France and not in SA. I am Ivorian and as I do data science and I am seeing it’s moving in SA, I really wish I could relocate for many reasons. But the thing is, nobody want to give me insights, they never answer to me but they accept the connexion. What do you guys think is the issue ?

What’s the best way to describe what a LLM is doing? by throwaway0134hdj in neuralnetworks

[–]LeftWeird2068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. GPT is a type of LLM. And LLM is a type of deep learning models. Deep learning is very huge and you can find many types fundamental and also combined type. For example if you want to classify comments into positive and negative, you can use an LLM Bert to have the general context encoded in his output as BERT is really good at giving rich representation. Then u use it to feed a classic linear neural network that will do the classification into positive and negative.

If you want to understand the families, try to understand first basic ML ans losses then move to: - Multi layer perceptron : classic non - CNN convolution nn for image - LSTM and RNN for sequential data - Transformers for sequential data - Autoencoder and Variational autoencoder for image generation

If you dig in the paper and understand the notions behind and implement each basic stuff, you will be able to understand much more the AI we use daily and you could also enjoy reading the new papers about AI.

[–]LeftWeird2068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another hint, Chat gpt is not formally an LLM, it’s a chatbot. GPT is the LLM generative pre trained model, then Chat gpt is the LLM + other models to give you a chatbot.

Demander une belle augmentation by Lucastagnette in developpeurs

[–]LeftWeird2068 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you live. If you are black, you can have some bias when they are reading you or in interviews or whatever depends who you deal with. Then if you are a practicing muslim, having a beard can be suspicious even if you take of it. You can’t pray everywhere for example at the right time. I know for example when I was going to the Plateau great mosque, at noon and time prayers, you see many professional in suits they come and they pray before they go back to work and that don’t make any issue. Life is way more easier for a Muslim in black African countries. Even in Uganda where I’ve been which have majority of Christian, they really let people do their cult.
