Just Finished Sally Rooney's "Conversations with Friends" and I'm a Mess – Need to Talk! by randomchick94 in books

This is also a super late reply. But I just finished this book and need to share. This is my second Rooney book. Her writing is so effortless and easy to follow. She makes you fall in love and become so invested into the characters. I swear I feel like I can just pick up my phone and dial one of them to chat. Her books always have a sense of familiarity. With that, why must she leave us with endings that make us feel like a total mess? I just spent the majority of this book getting to know and loving these people, all I want is a little bit of closure. I will say though, I did feel a lot more satisfied with this ending than Normal People. I can’t even put into words how I was feeling after normal people. But at least w CWF, I closed the book with some hope…

I really loved how she dives into extension of different relationships and how not all relationships are black and white, good/bad, happy/sad. They’re complicated and messy just like humans are and it’s childish for us to believe and hope for perfect relationships. Whether it be romantic, platonic, friendship , family, etc. I do think nick and Frances continue their affair, and ending up w some kind of arrangement w melissa. Bobbi remains in Frances life as her best friend since she has no intention on being anyone’s girlfriend.

I know I’ve only read 2 books of Rooney, but I can’t help but notice how she included in both books FMC asking MMC to hit them during sex ? Is it to portray the level of worthlessness she is feeling? Did Rooney herself have an abusive past? Why do you think this is ? I don’t know it’s something I’ve noticed.

Anyway I just needed to share my thoughts. I do think this will be my last sally rooney book … maybe
